Strange noises are coming from deep inside Eldin Volcano, and Darston suspects the flame giant from an old Goron folk tale has woken up. It’s a small dungeon of lava puzzles that ends with putting out the giant with Water Blocks and striking its core. It pays twice: a Piece of Heart and the Goron’s Bracelet.

How to Start

From Goron City, head up across the Eldin Volcano lava fields, along the rock paths between the lava pools. Where a stone ledge blocks the way, summon a Water Block against it, swim up through it and climb out on top. Ahead is a dark cave mouth, Summit Cave. Darston is standing just inside. “After the rift was mended, we started hearing these odd noises from inside Eldin Volcano.” He came to see if it was anything dangerous and found this cave.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Hear the folk tale

“There’s an old folk tale about a flame giant who lives in Eldin Volcano.” Gorons don’t mind fire, but this giant is supposed to be so hot it even burns them. The story goes that someone once put out its flames and trapped it inside the volcano, so maybe the sounds are the flame giant all lit up again. “But if it is, we need to come up with a way to put out its flames again. And fast.” The side quest A Mountainous Mystery begins.

Step 2: Ride Lava Rocks across the lava lake

The first chamber is a lava lake. Geysers in the lava push Lava Rock platforms up into tall pillars and drop them again. Summon a Lava Rock echo onto the lava (or step onto one a geyser has raised), ride it while it rises, and hop off onto the next stone ledge before it sinks. Repeat ledge to ledge to reach the far side.

Step 3: Cross the burning grass islands

Next come stone islands in the lava, joined by wooden plank bridges and covered in dry grass. Fire monsters set the grass and bridges ablaze, so the flames spread fast. Summon a fighter echo, such as the Spear Moblin, to deal with the monsters. At the end of the islands, use Bind on a Lava Rock floating in the lava and drag it over to use as a stepping stone to the next ledge.

Step 4: Climb the side-view cave

The cave then switches to a side-view section: rock pillars, ladders and narrow ledges above a pool of lava. Climb up the ladders and ledges, then hop over to a chest on an upper ledge: “You got 50 rupees! That makes you really happy!” Keep climbing the ladders between the pillars.

Step 5: Cross the lava on beds and floating blocks

Further on, wide lava pools separate the ledges. Drop an Old Bed echo onto the lava as a raft (it floats, with a “Rest” prompt) and ride it across. Where stone blocks float on the lava, Bind them and pull them under you as stepping stones.

Step 6: Enter the flame giant’s chamber

A dark room with pots and two lit torches flanking a purple doorway leads to the boss chamber. Step through, and the flame giant rises in the middle of the arena: a blazing head with two floating rock fists.

Step 7: Douse the giant and strike its core

Its burning body and fists hurt on contact, and it charges across the arena and slams its fists down, so keep moving. Drop Water Block echoes in its path and onto it to smother its fire. Once the flames go out, the rock body falls apart and its glowing blue core is exposed. Pull the core clear with Bind, then switch to Swordfighter Form and slash it. The giant soon reassembles and relights, so repeat until it collapses.

Reward

The giant leaves rupees and a heart behind: “You got a piece of heart! Collect four and your maximum number of hearts will increase.” (see Heart Pieces). Take the blue warp out to the first lava chamber and walk back to the entrance room, where Darston is waiting (“Zelda! There you are!”). First the rift, now a giant straight outta legend, and everyone in Goron City can rest a little easier. You get the Goron’s Bracelet: “It’s a Goron treasure that grants great strength. While you’re wearing it, you can carry things faster.” It’s a Goron heirloom, and they all agreed you should have it. Equip it as an accessory (see Goron’s Bracelet). Tips

  • Bring Water Block. It gets you up the ledge to the cave and it’s what puts out the giant’s fire.
  • A Fire-Proof smoothie such as a Cactus Smoothie helps on the lava fields outside (see Smoothies).
  • After the fight, the blue warp returns you to the first lava chamber, so you don’t have to cross the cave again.
