A little River Zora who still can’t swim is convinced his mother is about to feed him to monsters, because she keeps muttering about them while staring into the pool in their hut. She’s really making him a charm, and she needs to study three water monsters to finish it. Summon a Tangler, a Bombfish and a Biri into her pool one at a time, and you get the same charm, the Zora Scale, which lets you stay underwater longer.

How to Start

In River Zora Village, look for a small Zora standing in the water between the huts, groaning “Ughhh…”. Talk to him: “My mom’s being weird.” He explains that she’s “staring at the pool in our house… Talking to herself… Something about monsters…” and decides “She’s going to feed me to monsters!” Then he wonders if she’s just disappointed he can’t swim yet, admits he’s too scared to face her, and begs: “Please, you’ve got to help me. Could you check on my mom?” The Zora Child’s Fate banner appears.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Talk to his mother

Go into the family’s hut. The mother stands on a mat beside a large square pool, her bubble reading “Hmm…”. She recognizes you (“Oh my! It’s Zelda, right?”), has heard that you rescued the people caught in the rifts, and asks for help with a personal matter: “Could you bring me some monsters? I’m going to use them for something…” She wants them summoned straight into the pool (“Please put any monsters you bring me in the water here”) and promises “something nice” if you help, adding that you can do it in your spare time. She asks for three monsters, one at a time, and her bubble keeps reading “Must see…monsters.” until you’re done.

Step 2: A sinister fish (Tangler)

Her first request: “I need a monster that looks like a sinister fish!” Open your echoes and summon a Tangler into the pool. “Perfect! That’s exactly the sinister-looking fish monster I wanted!” The screen goes dark while she works (“*Clonk clonk clonk*”), and she says it was tough enough for the job but isn’t getting very shiny. Then she thanks you: “It helped me learn more about what I need to know.”

Step 3: A monster that goes BOOM (Bombfish)

Next she asks for “a monster that goes BOOM when anyone goes near it” and says “Please, put it in the water here, just like you did last time.” Summon a Bombfish into the pool. “Oh, a Bombfish! Those definitely go BOOM when you get close to them!” Another session in the dark follows. It wasn’t good enough either, “But it does have a fine shine. Looking better!”

Step 4: A shocking jellyfish (Biri)

Her last request: “Now, please bring me a shocking jellyfish monster!” Summon a Biri, the small electric jellyfish. “That monster is exactly what I had in mind! The way it floats is pretty.” After one more session (“Shifting colors…and patterns…”, “Ahaaa!”) she’s finished: “At last! I did it! Gotta say it turned out well too.” Then she says, “Now, to see my son. Come with me!”

Step 5: Medaka swims

Outside, she calls to him (“Medaka!”), and he backs away: “Mom! I’m not monster food!” She just asks him to hold out his hand and gives him a scale “polished using a legendary technique known only to Zora,” a special charm because she knew he worried about not being able to swim. He gives it a try and swims off across the pool (“Whoa! WHOA! I can do it! I’m SWIMMING!”). “Well done! I always knew you could!”

Reward

The mother thanks you (“I can’t begin to say how much this meant to us”) and gives you “the same charm I gave to Medaka”: “You got a Zora scale!” “It’s a charm made with secret Zora methods, and it enables the wearer to hold their breath for longer underwater.” She also explains the monsters: she needed each one to research ways to polish scales. The Side Quest Complete banner follows. Equip the scale as an accessory for longer dives. See Zora Scale.

Tips

  • Learn all three echoes before you go in, so you can finish in one visit. The Echo list shows where to find the Tangler, Bombfish and Biri.
  • The Zora Scale adds dive time but doesn’t make you swim faster (that’s Zora’s Flippers). Wear both if you have a spare accessory slot.
