The trading sequence is a chain of swaps between four Traveler’s Ships and ends with the Swordsman’s Scroll, the only scroll in the game, which lets you perform a Great Spin Attack. You start by clearing the Man of Smiles’ ship for the Hero’s New Clothes, then pass that item on through Nyeve, Hoiger Howgendoogen and Nyave until the Old Wayfarer takes the final item. Finish the Old Wayfarer’s mermaid quest on Bannan Island first, or the last step will not start.

Before you start

You need access to all four seas, so the sequence fits best late in the game once you have reached the Northeastern Sea. Do the mermaid quest on Bannan Island first, as described in the Fishing Guide. Bring healing items for the fights on two of the ships.

The five steps

1. Man of Smiles: Hero’s New Clothes

Sail to the Man of Smiles’ Traveler’s Ship in the Northeastern Sea. Board it and defeat the monsters inside: the monsters that fill it. The Man of Smiles is delighted, offers you a choice between a mysterious thing and a normal thing, and gives you the Hero’s New Clothes, which starts the sequence. He also hands you a treasure map as the normal thing.

2. Nyeve: Telescope

Take the clothes to Nyeve, the self-proclaimed hero who sails the Prince of Red Lions in the Northwestern Sea. He has been searching for them for ages and, when you agree to hand them over, gives you a Telescope. The message box then corrects itself and says it is just a kaleidoscope, which is why some guides call it that. Nyeve is also the sparring partner on that ship.

Guard Notebook

3. Hoiger Howgendoogen: Guard Notebook

Sail to the Ho Ho Tribe’s Traveler’s Ship in the Southeastern Sea. Show the Telescope to Hoiger Howgendoogen, a member of the Ho Ho tribe. He spots his real name written on it, keeps it, and gives you a dirty leather Guard Notebook in return.

Wood Heart

4. Nyave: Wood Heart

The notebook belongs to Nyave, the guard on the Traveler’s Ship in the Southwestern Sea. Beat the Miniblins that have overrun his ship, then give him the notebook. He recognises it as the one he dropped and hands over a Wood Heart, which looks tasty.

Swordsman's Scroll

5. Old Wayfarer: Swordsman’s Scroll

The Old Wayfarer has set off from his hut in his own ship, the S.S. Wayfarer, in the Southeastern Sea. Dock with it and, when he asks if you want to show him something, offer the Wood Heart. He takes it and says that what he wants to give you waits at home in a large treasure chest.

Sail back to Bannan Island. A Giant Eye Plant attacks your ship before you reach the dock, so fire at it until it is gone. Enter the Old Wayfarer’s hut and open the big chest to receive the Swordsman’s Scroll. Do three spin attacks in a row to unleash the Great Spin Attack.
