How to defeatYou do not fight it: shoot one body part with an arrow as it flies past

Dinraal is a peaceful fire dragon that circles part of Hyrule on a fixed route, and it never attacks you. The only reason to engage is to shoot it with an arrow for a dragon part. Which part drops depends on where the arrow lands, and each hit yields one item.

Where and when to find it

Dinraal follows the length of Tanagar Canyon and leaves north of the Gerudo Highlands. A good vantage point is the cliffs just south of the Eldin Great Skeleton: wait for the updraft, glide north and shoot. Another spot is the Tabantha Great Bridge, where it flies beneath you. It flies in the morning; sources put its pass over the bridge anywhere from about 5:00 to about 7:00, so be in place before dawn and rest at a campfire if you miss it. It can be shot once per day.

Getting the parts

Line up the shot

Stand where the dragon will pass beneath or beside you, ideally on a ledge, tower or bridge. A bow with good range helps. Light a fire and wait for the right hour if it is not out yet.

Glide in and slow time

When the updraft near its path lifts you, open the paraglider and fly alongside the dragon. Draw your bow in the air, which slows time, and aim at the part you want.

Pick the part

Aim at the body for the Scale, at the claws for the Claw, at the head or mouth for the Fang shard, and at the horns for the Horn shard. Each arrow that connects makes one item fall for you to catch or collect. Horn shards are the rarest and the most useful, so aim for them first if you can.

What the parts are for

  • Cooking, where dragon parts strongly extend the duration of effect dishes; the horn shard gives the longest boost.
  • Armor upgrades at the Great Fairy fountains.
  • Offerings at the goddess statue of Spring of Power to open its hidden shrine, which needs a Scale of this dragon.
  • Selling to merchants for rupees.

Tips

  • Shots are limited by timing, not by arrows: the dragon returns on later days, so you can repeat the trip.
  • The dragon’s body is covered with fire, so stay a short way off rather than climbing onto it.
