Kakariko Village is burning, and Sheik has a job for you. Ride in on Epona, hear what escaped from under the village and learn the Nocturne of Shadow, the warp song to the Graveyard. Then trade the Master Sword for your childhood body and collect a Gold Skulltula in Hyrule Castle’s garden and two Heart Pieces from the frog choir on Zora River. Finish with the Song of Storms at the windmill, which drains the village well.

Last stop at Lake Hylia
Gold Skulltula #74
The night begins at the tree growing out of the cliff above Lake Hylia. Check the hollow in its trunk and a Gold Skulltula token drops: “You’ve collected 74 tokens so far.” Climb down when the prompt appears and get back on Epona for the ride that follows. The Gold Skulltula list has the full count.

Kakariko Village on fire
Ride to the village
Mount Epona and gallop across Hyrule Field at night. A red glow marks Death Mountain far ahead, but the nearer light comes from Kakariko Village, where the houses are ablaze and purple smoke curls around the windmill. Dismount when the prompt shows and run in on foot. Sheik cries “Stay back, Link!” and “Look out!” as something moves through the purple smoke, and Link is knocked flat. Navi calls out until he comes to.

Sheik and Impa
Sheik asks whether you can move. Navi asks what that thing was, and Sheik answers that it was a creature of darkness, locked away here for some time. He says that he and Impa heard a monster had appeared in Kakariko Village and came to investigate. Impa then says the barrier has been broken, and when Sheik blames Ganondorf she agrees: with the Demon King’s rise to power, the creature she had trapped here grew in strength.

Sheik wants to chase it to the Shadow Temple, but Impa refuses, because someone has to guard the village in case the beast returns. She sets out for the temple herself and tells Sheik to stay. Sheik asks her to be careful and then says out loud that the creature is surely heading for the Shadow Temple now.

Nocturne of Shadow
Sheik’s request
Rain falls over the village as Sheik speaks with Link about Impa, one of the sages, who is needed to seal the Demon King away. Sheik cannot help her in his current state and instead asks you to go to the temple and defeat the demon. The entrance is at the far end of the village, deep in the Graveyard. Navi’s bubble offers a new quest, Creature of Darkness, which later shows in the Threads of Time.

Learn the Nocturne of Shadow
Sheik takes out his harp and plays the melody of the temple’s legend. When the prompt “Play the Nocturne of Shadow.” appears, take out your Ocarina and play the notes back. A glow gathers around the Ocarina and the box reads “You learned the Nocturne of Shadow!” Play it anywhere to warp to the Kakariko Village graveyard, a quick route to the temple door.

Sheik warns that the Shadow Temple is full of traps that only the eyes of truth reveal, and that he does not know where to find them. He does say that a clue lies somewhere in this village. Find the eyes of truth, he tells you, and help Impa. The village well is where that trail leads, and the Song of Storms opens it later in this chapter.

The windmill man and the crawl hole
Song of Storms
Walk up the hill path to the house at the windmill and talk to the Music Man. He grumbles that he will never forget what happened here seven years ago and that, if a kid with an Ocarina had not played that weird song, the well would still have water. Open the songbook and play the Song of Storms, which you already know. The box reads “You played the Song of Storms!” and the Music Man howls that he will never forgive you. Nothing comes of it yet, but the song is ready for the windmill later in this chapter.

The trembling beard
Outside, two villagers stand in the smoke. One says the demon fled back into the depths of the Graveyard, and the bearded one jokes that he tried tracking it with his beard, which does not work on a creature without a beard. These two only talk, so there is nothing to gain here.

The small tunnel
Drop down into the water channel next to the village square and dive along it, holding the button to swim under the surface. The channel ends at a small tunnel mouth in the stone. Check it and Navi remarks that you have grown a lot bigger and that, back when you were a kid, you could crawl through openings like this one. You cannot fit as an adult, so this is for later.

Back to childhood
Play the Prelude of Light
Open the songbook, choose the Prelude of Light and play it. A flash of white light carries you to the Temple of Time. A “Temple of Time” banner appears as you land on the Triforce emblem in the middle of the hall.

Return the Master Sword
Walk up to the pedestal and the cutscene starts. Link raises the Master Sword and slides it back into the stone, and a Triforce-shaped light wraps around him. When it fades you are a child again, and the sword is gone from your hands. Run down the hall and out through the archway to leave the temple.

Cross Hyrule Castle Town
The “Hyrule Castle Town” banner appears when you step out, and the market is quiet at night. Run through the lanes towards the castle until the “Hyrule Castle” banner shows at the road that leads up to it. You need Bombs and the Boomerang for the next stop, so check your item screen before you climb.

Hyrule Castle garden and Gold Skulltula #75
Climb to the garden
Leave the main road and climb the ivy wall at the side of the road, which shows Let Go and Jump prompts. At the top, run along the garden’s stone paths, past hedges and flower beds, until you reach the moat that circles the castle. A Rupee waits near the wall. Jump in the water channel, dash and dive along it until you climb out beside an iron fence and a tall tree.

Play the Song of Storms
Stand by the fence and play the Song of Storms. A purple wind swirls over the ground, a leafy plant sprouts and a round hole opens in the earth beside it. Crawl into the hole, which leads into a short, dark cave below the castle grounds. The sound of spiders tells you that a Gold Skulltula is close.

Gold Skulltula #75
Select Bombs in the item screen, light one and set it down against the cracked rock wall. Stand back for the blast and walk through the new opening. A spider hangs in its web at the end of the cave. Throw the Boomerang when the Throw prompt shows. The Gold Skulltula token appears and the box reads “You’ve collected 75 tokens so far.” You can also fetch the Rupees lying around with the Boomerang.

Leave the cave
Walk to the end of the cave, where a large yellow flower waits on a leaf. Stand on it and ride it out of the cave. You come out of a second hole just next to the tree beside the castle road, and it is daytime outside. Then follow the castle’s fence path towards the river, because the frogs are your next stop.

Frog choir on Zora River
Find the waterfall pool
Follow the path beside the moat and fence to Zora River. Climb the stone steps by the stream and cross the narrow ledges to the pool below the waterfall. Press the button to dive and swim across to the far bank. Five frogs sit on tree stumps in the clearing past the pool. Walk up and talk to them to start the choir.

Heart Piece #27
The frogs ask for a song to sing to, and they sing about ribbiting in the rain. Open the songbook and play the Song of Storms. A purple gust sweeps over the stumps and the frogs dance, adding that the rain keeps their skin nice. They then drop a Heart Piece: Heart Piece #27. The box tells you that four pieces form one container and that you need one more.

Play the Song of Time
Talk to the frogs again. They thank you for the song and ask for another. Open the songbook, pick the Song of Time and play it. A blue burst shows around the stumps and the frogs praise your mysterious melody. They say that after all that they are ready for the big time, and that they will give you a Heart Piece once they are full.

Heart Piece #28
Say yes when they ask whether you want to play with them. Ready… flashes on screen, and then you play notes with the Ocarina while the frogs hop to catch insects. A Cleared! banner shows when the frogs have eaten their fill. They give you Heart Piece #28. It is the fourth piece in your set, so the box reads that you have collected four Pieces of Heart and earned an additional heart, and your hearts are fully restored.

Windmill and the Dry Well
Return to the Music Man
Leave the clearing and walk back to Kakariko Village. It is daytime again, and the village is as it was before the fire. Climb the stone steps up to the windmill, where the Music Man is thinking of a song and asks you to play something that could bring a storm.

Play the Song of Storms again
Select the Song of Storms and play it for him. Rain fills the sky, the windmill spins in the wind and the well in the village square starts to drain. The Music Man tells you to go round and round. Step outside and walk across the village to see the result.

The Dry Well
Walk over to the village well. A villager there says you can see the bottom of the well now and that it looks like there is a tunnel down there. He adds that there are scary rumors about a person who once lived nearby and had the “eyes of truth.” The Song of Storms has drained it, and the tunnel is the way into the Bottom of the Well, where the next chapter takes you.
