There are six Great Fairy Fountains in Ocarina of Time. Three give you a spell, and the others give a permanent power-up: the Magic Meter (or the Magic Spin Attack for an adult), Double Magic and Double Defense. Each fountain is behind a bombable wall or a heavy obstacle, and every fairy wakes the same way: stand on the Triforce symbol in front of her pool and play Zelda’s Lullaby. Most players collect them over the course of the game, picking up the songs and items they need along the way.

Hyrule Castle (Child Link): Din’s Fire
As Child, head to the dead-end road beside the gates of Hyrule Castle, where a boulder blocks a small opening in the wall. Place a Bomb against it to open the way and drop into the fountain. Play Zelda’s Lullaby on the Triforce symbol to receive Din’s Fire, a ring of fire that clears weaker enemies and lights torches. Do this before you pull the Master Sword; as Adult, the castle is gone.

Death Mountain Summit (Child or Adult Link): Magic
Near the summit of Death Mountain, before you enter the Crater, a boulder blocks a cave off the path. Blow it up with a Bomb, or with the Megaton Hammer as Adult. As Child, the fairy gives you the Magic Meter, which powers spells and magic arrows. As Adult, she gives the Magic Spin Attack, which lets you charge a stronger spin attack at the cost of magic. Visit as Child first, since you need the Magic Meter before you can cast Din’s Fire and the other spells.

Death Mountain Crater (Adult Link): Double Magic
In the Crater as Adult, the fountain sits in a cave in the wall past the broken bridge. You need the Goron Tunic to stay in the heat, and the Hover Boots or Longshot to cross the gap. Summon the fairy with Zelda’s Lullaby to double the capacity of your Magic Meter.

Zora’s Fountain (Child or Adult Link): Farore’s Wind
In Zora’s Fountain, look at the cliff wall at the back, near where Jabu-Jabu rests (or where the ice sits as Adult). Bomb the wall to open the entrance. Summon the fairy with Zelda’s Lullaby to receive Farore’s Wind, which lets you set a warp point in a dungeon and return to it later.

Desert Colossus (Child or Adult Link): Nayru’s Love
At Desert Colossus, head to the rock wall near the Spirit Temple entrance and look for a crack between two palm trees. Bomb it to reveal a hidden cave, then play Zelda’s Lullaby on the Triforce symbol inside. The fairy grants Nayru’s Love, a blue barrier that blocks damage from enemies for a short time.

Ganon’s Castle Grounds (Adult Link): Double Defense
Outside the ruins of Ganon’s Castle, a heavy stone pillar blocks the fountain. You need the Golden Gauntlets, found inside Ganon’s Castle, to lift it. Once it is moved, summon the fairy with Zelda’s Lullaby. Her reward is Double Defense, which halves the damage Link takes. Your hearts show a white outline while it is active.

Returning to a fountain
Each fairy gives her reward once, but you can go back and play Zelda’s Lullaby again to restore all your hearts and magic. That makes a fountain a free full heal before a hard dungeon or boss.
