You can own five bottles in Ocarina of Time Remake. The first four come while you are a child: one from the Potion Shop for catching a bug, one from the Cucco Lady for returning her seven Cuccos, one from Talon with a serving of Lon Lon Milk, and one found in Lake Hylia holding Ruto’s letter. The fifth waits until you are an adult and have sold five Big Poes to the Poe Collector. The Potion Shop bottle is the quickest to get, and several side trips later need a free bottle.

The five bottles
Empty Bottle (Potion Shop)
Walk into the Potion Shop in Hyrule Castle Town. The shopkeeper cries out that a bug has escaped and asks you to use his empty bottle to catch it. Answer “Leave it to me!” and the bottle is yours, the first of five.

Chase the bug around the floor, corner it against a wall or the pots and press the button you gave the bottle when you are close. The message about collecting a bug in a bottle appears, and the shopkeeper rewards you with a Red Potion sealed in the same bottle. You can do this as soon as you reach the town as a child.

Empty Bottle (Cucco Lady)
Just inside the gate of Kakariko Village, the Cucco Lady stands beside an empty pen: all seven of her Cuccos have wandered off. Talk to her, choose “Do you need help?” and then pick up each Cucco you find on the lanes, stairs and rooftops and set it down inside the fence.

When the seventh is back she thanks you and the box reads “You got an empty bottle!” Do this as a child. Nothing else is required.

Lon Lon Milk (Talon)
Go through the door of the ranch house at Lon Lon Ranch and wake Talon. He says his chickens have run loose and promises his best prize, Lon Lon Milk with a bottle, if you find them all. A 30-second timer starts. Three chickens are hiding in the room, and you grab each one with the Pick Up prompt.

Talk to Talon again once you have them all. Either answer to his joke about Malon leads to the same reward: “You got some Lon Lon milk!” The bottle comes filled, and one serving restores a few hearts. Talon asks you to bring the bottle back once it is empty.

Bottle with Ruto’s Letter
Win the Silver Scale from the diving game in Zora Domain, then dive in Lake Hylia and swim to the wooden post sticking out of the water. You pull out a bottle: “You got a bottle!” Navi says something is inside, and the message adds that it already has something in it, and a rolled letter shows through the glass. The whole route is in Zora River and Zora Domain.

Swim back to the throne room, stand on the central platform and talk to King Zora. He notices the bottle in your hands. Hand it over so he can read the letter, and choose “Leave it to me!” when he asks you to rescue Ruto. He keeps the letter, and the bottle stays with you.

Empty Bottle (Poe Collector)
The last bottle needs the Fairy Bow, Epona and adult Link. Hunt Big Poes on Hyrule Field, put each one in a bottle and sell them to the Poe Collector in Hyrule Castle Town. Each sale adds 100 points to your card. At 500 points he congratulates you and gives you a bottle with “May this gift bring you joy, my friend.” That takes five Big Poes, and you need a free bottle for every Poe you carry to town. The Big Poes page covers the hunt and the 1,000 point prize.

What to carry in a bottle
Bug
A Bug costs 30 rupees at the Potion Shop, and you can also catch one for free where a faint glow crawls over the ground, as in the Graveyard grass. Release it over a patch of soft soil to flush out a Gold Skulltula. Every patch uses one bug, so keep a bottle free. See Soft Soil Locations.

Fish
A Fish costs 50 rupees at the Potion Shop, or you can scoop one out of the cave pool in Zora Domain with an empty bottle. You need one to feed Lord Jabu-Jabu, plus a second empty bottle to catch another inside his belly.

Red Potion
The Potion Shop pays you with one for the escaped bug. The shopkeeper adds that he will sell you more potions if your bottle ever runs dry.

Lon Lon Milk
Besides Talon, you can fill a bottle by playing Epona’s Song to a cow while you carry an empty bottle. One stands in a hidden grotto on Death Mountain Trail and another belongs to Miss Moo in Gerudo Valley. A cow refuses to give milk if you have no empty bottle to hold it.

Blue Fire
Use an empty bottle on a blue flame in the Ice Cavern or in Ganondorf’s Castle and the message reads “You collected some blue fire in a bottle!” It melts red ice that no other fire can thaw.

Poe and Big Poe
Swing an empty bottle at a Poe in the Graveyard and Navi says “It…fits in a bottle.” Big Poes on Hyrule Field are caught the same way once an arrow has brought them down. The Poe Collector buys both.

Keep at least one bottle empty at all times, because bugs, fish, milk and Poes all need one when you meet them.
