Table of Contents
From Kakariko Village to Hyrule Field
Play the Sun’s Song
On the path through Kakariko Village, open the ocarina and play the Sun’s Song. The sky swirls and turns to night, so you cross Hyrule Field after dark. The song switches between day and night wherever you stand.

Gold Skulltula #12, Kakariko Village
Walk down through Kakariko Village past the lit houses. Under the eaves of one house, a Gold Skulltula clings to the plaster wall. Strike it when it shows and collect the token, number 12. It is easy to miss if you are only passing through. Then take the stairs and the gate out of the village.

Follow the road to Lon Lon Ranch
The Hyrule Field banner appears as you step out. Keep to the dirt road with Navi leading and check the map if you are unsure of the way. There is nothing to fight or collect on this stretch. After a short run the Lon Lon Ranch banner appears and the ranch fences come into view.

Talon’s Cucco game and Lon Lon Milk
Talk to Talon in the ranch house
Cross the ranch yard to the wooden house and go through its door. Talon is slumped on the floor among his chickens. Talk to him and he recognizes the fairy child from the castle and says he owes you one. He explains his side hustle, the cucco-finding game: find all his chickens and win his best prize, Lon Lon Milk, with a free refillable bottle thrown in.

Cucco-finder game
Talon gives you 30 seconds and a timer starts on screen. Three chickens are mixed in with the others in the house. Run around the room and pick up the right ones at the Pick Up prompt, and Talon announces how many are left after every catch. Finish with time to spare and he congratulates you.

Lon Lon Milk
Return to Talon and talk to him. He asks whether you want to marry Malon and take over the ranch, with the choices “Sure thing!” and “Seems kinda sudden…”, then laughs that he was only kidding. He hands over a bottle: “You got some Lon Lon milk!” One serving restores a few hearts, and Talon asks you to bring the bottle back once the milk is gone for a refill at 30 rupees.

Malon’s Friend and Epona’s Song
Gold Skulltula #13, Lon Lon Ranch
Leave the house and follow the fenced dirt path away from the yard in daylight. A Gold Skulltula shows up along the way, and the box tells you that you now hold 13 tokens. Then move on to the paddock.

Meet Malon in the paddock
Continue through the white arch into the paddock, the big fenced field with a ruined stone tower at the far end. Malon is standing in the grass. She thanks you for finding her papa, tells you how they headed straight home after you woke him, then introduces her friend, the young horse Epona, who is shy of strangers. The Malon’s Friend quest starts here.

Malon’s Friend
Malon asks if you have an instrument, so show her your ocarina. She loves it and asks you to accompany her. Epona herself becomes yours later, in Ingo Ranch and Epona. For now you only need the melody, so watch the staff when Malon tells you to listen.

Epona’s Song
Copy the melody Malon shows you on the staff: X, Y, A, X, Y, A. Play it back and the game confirms with “You played Epona’s Song!” Play it again with Malon and the box announces “You learned Epona’s Song!” The song calls Epona to your side. She trots over and lets you stand next to her, and Malon says she thinks Epona likes you and that she will let you ride her sometime when she is bigger.

Replay the song
To read the notes again, open the ocarina song menu and select Epona’s Song, or press the listen button to hear it. Walk back out through the paddock gate and, next to the fence, play the Sun’s Song to turn the afternoon to night before you head for the storeroom.

Storeroom Heart Piece
Enter the tower storeroom
Follow the fence along the edge of the ranch until you reach the ruined stone building with the red door. Go inside to find a walled room stacked with wooden crates. Navi hovers over the way forward. Press A at the Grab prompt to pull some crates aside and push others to clear a lane through the room.

Clear the crate path
Work along the lanes between the crates, grabbing the crate that blocks you at each corner. At the far end the crates give way to a short stone passage. It opens into a round stone room strewn with rubble, where something glows.

Heart Piece #3
In the stone room, walk up to the glowing pink heart and press A. The box says “You got a Piece of Heart!” and tells you one more is needed to form a container. This is Heart Piece #3. Then head back out through the crate room.

On toward Gerudo Valley
Cross Hyrule Field at night
Leave Lon Lon Ranch by the main gate and head back onto Hyrule Field. After dark a Guay crow circles overhead, and Navi tells you to keep your eye on your surroundings. Stalchildren rise from the ground, and Navi warns that more keep coming however many you cut down. Do not stop to fight. Keep running along the field path and let them fall behind.

Kaepora Gaebora’s field advice
Kaepora Gaebora swoops in, calls out “Hello there, Link!” and tells you about the area. Lake Hylia lies through the rolling fields, and Gerudo Valley lies beyond a stone archway, where the Gerudo thieves have their hideout. He warns that it is no place for a child, and leaves the choice of route to you. Take the archway on to Gerudo Valley, covered next.
