The Happy Mask Trading Sequence is a loan chain. The Happy Mask Salesman hires you as a “happiness salesman”: he lends you a mask, you find the person who wants it and sell it, and then you pay the shop what the mask is worth. Selling one mask unlocks the next. Some sales make a profit, one loses money, and the last one pays out the entire capacity of your wallet. Once all four masks are sold, the Salesman gives you the Mask of Truth and puts three more masks on the shelf, and none of those four needs to be sold.

The sequence, step by step
Open the Happy Mask Shop
Until the sequence opens, the shop in the Market has a bearded man inside who wonders when it will open. It opens after you show Zelda’s Letter to the guard at the Death Mountain Trail gate in Kakariko Village, so first collect the letter from the castle and bring it to the village. The Salesman only has the Keaton Mask on the shelf to begin with. You can carry only one trade mask at a time, you cannot take a new one until you have repaid the last one, and you can borrow a mask you have already sold again, though each mask can be sold only once. See the Kakariko Village and Hyrule Market chapter.

Keaton Mask

Borrow the Keaton Mask, equip it and return to the same gate guard on the Death Mountain Trail path. He wants the mask for his son and pays 15 Rupees. Return to the shop and repay the 10 Rupees the mask is worth, and you keep 5 Rupees of profit.

Skull Mask

Borrow the Skull Mask and wear it. Go into the Lost Woods from Kokiri Forest and take the first path to the left, where a Skull Kid sits on a tree stump. Speak to him with the mask on. He sees through the disguise at once, but he likes the mask and buys it for himself, paying 10 Rupees. The shop wants 20, so this is the one sale where you lose money: you finish 10 Rupees behind. The same Skull Kid also gives you a Piece of Heart if you play him Saria’s Song, so do both at once.

Spooky Mask

Once the Skull Mask is repaid, borrow the Spooky Mask. In the daytime, go to Kakariko Graveyard and find the young boy who walks the graves in imitation of the gravekeeper. When he sees the mask he takes you for Dampe, and then happily pays 30 Rupees for it. That matches the 30 Rupees you repay, so this sale leaves your wallet unchanged.

Bunny Hood

You can borrow the Bunny Hood as soon as the Spooky Mask is repaid, but you cannot finish the sale until you have all three Spiritual Stones, because the Running Man only starts jogging around Hyrule Field after that. In the day he circles Lon Lon Ranch and cannot be talked to. At night he stops for a rest, and you can speak to him while he is resting. Wear the Bunny Hood, and he obsesses over the ears and pays as many Rupees as your wallet can hold: 99 with the starting wallet, 200 with the Adult’s Wallet and 500 with the Giant’s Wallet. The Giant’s Wallet comes from 30 Gold Skulltula tokens, so complete that first if you want the biggest payout, or go with 200 after only ten tokens. See Gold Skulltula Locations. Repay the shop 50 Rupees afterwards.

Return to the shop
After you repay the Bunny Hood, the Salesman considers the sequence complete. He tells you the Mask of Truth was passed down by the Sheikah, and lets you borrow it, and he sets out three further masks.

Masks you unlock afterward
Mask of Truth

Wear the Mask of Truth and speak to a Gossip Stone to hear what it has to say; without the mask you get nothing from them. It also works at the Forest Stage in the Lost Woods, where showing it earns a Deku Nut capacity upgrade, as does the Skull Mask for the Deku Stick upgrade. See Equipment and Capacity Upgrades and Gossip Stone Locations.

Goron, Zora and Gerudo Masks

After the Mask of Truth, the Goron Mask, Zora Mask and Gerudo Mask can be borrowed for free. They have no use except to change how characters react when you speak to them. For example, Princess Ruto is delighted when she sees you in the Zora Mask. Nothing is gained or lost by borrowing them, and they are not part of the 100% items beyond the full set.

Tips
Do the Keaton Mask first, keep 20 Rupees ready for the Skull Mask loss, and repay each mask before asking for the next. All masks are child items, so finish the whole sequence, including the Bunny Hood sale, before you pull the Master Sword. A good order is to collect the Spiritual Stones first, then use the night-time rest of the Running Man in Hyrule Field to finish up with a full wallet.
