Every carrying limit in Ocarina of Time can be raised, and almost all of the upgrades come from a minigame, a favour or the Gold Skulltula House instead of a shop. Bag and quiver upgrades always give the next size up, so the order you earn them in does not matter. The table lists every upgrade, and the sections below give the steps.

Bomb Bags
Link finds his first Bomb Bag in Dodongo’s Cavern, and it holds 20 bombs. It is in a chest in the dungeon. See Dodongo’s Cavern.

The 30-bomb bag comes from Goron City. A Goron rolls around the second level of the city in a loop. As a child, stand where the tunnel starts and drop a bomb or fire a Bombchu so that it blows up in front of him while he is in the tunnel. He stops and gives you the bigger bag. See Death Mountain, Goron City and Hyrule Market.

The 40-bomb bag is one of the random prizes in the Bombchu Bowling Alley in the Hyrule Castle Market. A game costs 30 Rupees for 10 Bombchus, and you win a prize by hitting all three targets. Other prizes are bombs, Bombchus, a Heart Piece and a Purple Rupee, so you may need to win several times. If you do not own the 30-bomb bag, the alley gives the next bag up.

Quivers
Your first Quiver holds 30 arrows and arrives with the Fairy Bow in the Forest Temple. Adult Link only.

The Big Quiver holds 40 arrows. Play the Shooting Gallery in Kakariko Village as an adult and break all ten targets in the round. A lower score pays a Rupee prize.

The Biggest Quiver holds 50 arrows. Earn it at the Gerudo Horseback Archery range in Gerudo’s Fortress, which opens once you have the Gerudo Card and have Epona. A round costs 20 Rupees and gives you 20 arrows. Score 1,000 points for a Heart Piece, then 1,500 for the quiver upgrade. If you have not yet earned the 40-arrow quiver, the range gives that one instead, and the Kakariko gallery then gives you the 50-arrow quiver. See Gerudo’s Fortress.

Deku Seed (Bullet) Bags
The first bag holds 30 Deku Seeds and arrives with the Fairy Slingshot in the Great Deku Tree. Both larger bags come from child-only challenges, and you can win them in either order, with the first win giving 40 and the second 50.

The first challenge is the hanging target in the Lost Woods. Take the right-hand path of the first Lost Woods room to a tree with a target and hit the bullseye three times in a row. The second is the Shooting Gallery in the Hyrule Castle Market, where you need to break all ten targets in a round with the Slingshot.

Wallets
You begin with a wallet that holds 99 Rupees. Take 10 Gold Skulltula tokens to the House of Skulltula in Kakariko Village for the Adult’s Wallet (200 Rupees), and 30 tokens for the Giant’s Wallet (500 Rupees). Both are given at either age. Tokens are not spent, so the same tokens count toward every reward. See Gold Skulltula Locations. You will want the 500-Rupee wallet before you sell the Bunny Hood, because the buyer pays an amount equal to your wallet size.

Deku Sticks and Deku Nuts
| Item | Limit | Where | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deku Sticks | 10 to 20 | Business Scrub in the Lost Woods, in the room with the bridge out of Kokiri Forest | 40 Rupees |
| Deku Sticks | 20 to 30 | Forest Stage, hidden under the butterflies in the Lost Woods | Wear the Skull Mask |
| Deku Nuts | 20 to 30 | Forest Stage | Wear the Mask of Truth |
| Deku Nuts | 30 to 40 | Business Scrub in the Lost Woods room that leads to the Sacred Forest Meadow | Bomb the large rock to find the grotto, then pay 40 Rupees |
To reach the Forest Stage, enter the Lost Woods from Kokiri Forest and take the right, left, right, left and left exits to the room with a lone tree. A hidden hole sits under the butterflies to the left of the tree, and the Lens of Truth shows it. Inside, put on the mask and walk up to the Deku Scrubs in the spotlight. The Skull Mask is borrowed from the Happy Mask Shop and the Mask of Truth is the reward for completing the mask sequence, so see Mask Trading Sequence.
There is a bug in the original N64 release. Once you have been given the Poacher’s Saw in the adult trading chain, the Forest Stage will not give you the Deku Nut upgrade. Do the Forest Stage before that point. The 3DS version fixed this, but this guide covers the original game.
Strength and diving gear
| Icon | Upgrade | Where | Age | What it lets you do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goron’s Bracelet | Darunia, Goron City | Child | Pick up Bomb Flowers | |
| Silver Gauntlets | Spirit Temple | Adult | Lift big gray rocks and push heavy blocks | |
| Golden Gauntlets | Ganon’s Castle, Shadow Trial | Adult | Lift the largest pillars and rocks | |
| Silver Scale | Zora’s Domain, Diving Game | Child | Dive deeper | |
| Golden Scale | Lake Hylia Fishing Pond | Adult | Dive deepest |
Darunia gives you the Goron’s Bracelet after you cheer him up with Saria’s Song, and you need it to pick up the Bomb Flowers in Dodongo’s Cavern. Adult Link can carry Bomb Flowers without the bracelet. See Death Mountain, Goron City and Hyrule Market.

The Silver Gauntlets are a main reward in the Spirit Temple, and they come in a chest you reach as an adult. The Golden Gauntlets are in a chest in the Shadow Trial of Ganon’s Castle, and you need them for the Fire and Light Trials and to move the boulder in front of the Great Fairy of Ganon’s Castle. See Ganon’s Castle and Ganon’s Tower.

The Silver Scale comes from the Diving Game at the top of the waterfall near King Zora in Zora’s Domain. Pay 20 Rupees and dive off the edge to collect the five Rupees on the bottom of the pool before the time runs out. Later rounds pay out with more valuable Rupees. See Zora’s River and Zora’s Domain.

The Golden Scale is a prize from the Fishing Pond at Lake Hylia. Rent a rod for 20 Rupees and catch a fish of roughly 14 pounds or more as an adult. A child Link who catches a 7-pound fish gets a Heart Piece instead. The scale is optional, and it lets you dive deeper than the Silver Scale can reach. The Silver Scale is enough for the Water Temple. The Giant’s Knife and Biggoron‘s Sword are on Items and Equipment.

Magic meter and defense
| Upgrade | Where | Age | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magic Meter | Great Fairy, Death Mountain summit | Child | Bomb the wall left of the owl’s perch. Play Zelda’s Lullaby on the Triforce tile. |
| Double Magic | Great Fairy, Death Mountain Crater | Adult | Smash the boulders in the entrance with the Megaton Hammer. |
| Double Defense | Great Fairy, Ganon’s Castle | Adult | Golden Gauntlets move the rock. Damage taken is halved. |
The Magic Meter is what powers the spells, the arrows and the Lens of Truth, and Double Magic doubles its size. The fairies each wake only with Zelda’s Lullaby on the Triforce tile, and the full list with directions is on Great Fairy Fountains.

Items you pick up during quests are on Items and Equipment. Dungeon keys and maps are on Dungeon Maps, Compasses and Keys.
