| Covers | Kakariko Village, Kakariko Graveyard and the Royal Family’s Tomb, and the Hyrule Castle Town Market (child), with the adult changes in both |
|---|---|
| Dungeon | None here. The entrance to the Bottom of the Well is in Kakariko (its own chapter), and the Death Mountain gate is the way on to the next chapter. |
| Rewards | Empty Bottle (Cucco Lady), Hylian Shield, Sun’s Song, Mask of Truth and the other loan masks, Bullet Bag upgrade, Pieces of Heart (Graveyard x4, windmill, roof man, Skulltula House, Treasure Chest Game, Bombchu Bowling, lost dog, Impa’s house), Bigger Quiver, Hookshot, Pocket Egg, the House of Skulltula rewards, and the village Gold Skulltulas |
These two places hold more of the early game than any other pair of areas: the first loose bottle, the Sun’s Song, a free shield, the whole mask chain, three mini-games and nearly ten Pieces of Heart. After Zelda sends you to Kakariko, work through it in this order: the village and the gate (which also opens the Mask Shop), the Cucco Lady’s bottle, the Graveyard, then go back to Castle Town for the shops and games. Many extras need things you do not have yet, so each entry says what it needs and which age, and the adult visit has its own section at the end of the village part.

Table of Contents
Kakariko Village
Arrive and look around
Leave the Field by the stone stairs in the north-east, and the village’s name card appears. Kakariko is Impa’s home town, a village of narrow lanes on the slopes below Death Mountain. Straight ahead is a large tree, the bridge and stairs lead to the upper village, and the windmill stands at the back, with the way into the Graveyard on its right. The first house on the right is the House of Skulltula, Impa’s house is farther in, a building site fills the middle of the village, and a tall lookout tower stands beside it. Up the hill on the left is the guarded gate to Death Mountain Trail. The Bazaar, the Potion Shop and the Shooting Gallery are shut while you are a child.

The Death Mountain gate and Zelda’s Letter
The guard at the gate refuses to let a child through. Show him Zelda’s Letter (open the item screen while facing him) and he opens the gate. Doing this also opens the Happy Mask Shop in the Market. The guard mentions that you will need a proper shield on the mountain and tells you to look at the Bazaar in Castle Town. If you talk to him before you buy the Hylian Shield, the Bazaar shopkeeper takes a random 10 to 40 Rupees off the 80-Rupee price. There is a free shield in the Graveyard, so you can skip buying it. He also asks you to bring a Keaton Mask for his son, which is the start of the mask chain in the Market section.

The Cucco Lady and your first bottle
Anju stands next to her Cucco pen near Impa’s house. Her seven Cuccos have run off. Bring all seven back to the pen and she gives you an Empty Bottle, one of the four in the game. Pick Cuccos up with A and throw them into the pen, and never hit one: strike a Cucco repeatedly and it calls the whole flock to attack you. A Cucco can also glide you across gaps if you jump off a ledge holding it. Here are the seven:

| # | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beside Anju, between the pen and the Graveyard path | Pick it up and throw it into the pen |
| 2 | In front of the guard at the Death Mountain gate, near the ramp | Carry it back to the pen |
| 3 | On a high ledge beside the Skulltula House | Hit it once with a Deku Nut or Slingshot seed so it runs off, or carry another Cucco from the building site’s upper ledge and glide across |
| 4 | Near the village entrance | Carry it back to the pen |
| 5 | In a crate near the stairs left of the entrance, on the way to the upper village | Roll into the crate to break it |
| 6 | Lower part of the fenced secret area in the north-east corner, beside a hole | See below; throw it back over the fence |
| 7 | Top of the ladder in the same area | Carry it down and glide back to the pen |
The north-east area is closed off by a tall fence. The easy way in is to carry any Cucco up the stairs past the carpenter who jogs near the Graveyard path, then jump off the ledge diagonally toward the rust-coloured house, so the Cucco glides you over the fence. Another way is to climb the lookout tower, target the middle of the village and side-hop onto a thin fence. The hole in the corner leads to a chest of Rupees (the Kakariko open grotto). Throw Cucco 6 back over the fence, climb the ladder, take Cucco 7, and glide back. Once all seven are in the pen, Anju hands over the bottle. That is the same bottle you need for the Gold Skulltula soil patches in Kokiri Forest.

With the bottle, walk west of the pen and pick up the stone in the grass; bugs scurry out. Catch one in the bottle. A bottle of bugs is what coaxes Skulltulas out of soft soil all over the game (see Magic Bean Soft Soil Locations), and the other bottle sources are summarised on Bottle Locations.

Gold Skulltulas in the village (child, night)
Five tokens appear only at night in the village as a child. You can pass the time by playing the Sun’s Song once you have it. A token message confirms each one.

| Where | How |
|---|---|
| The large tree near the village entrance | Roll into the trunk and it drops down, then kill it with the sword |
| The side of the House of Skulltula | Look at the wall and attack with the sword or Slingshot |
| The pile of bricks in the building site | Look at the middle pile; use the sword or Slingshot |
| The side of the house nearest the Death Mountain gate | Attack from the ground with the sword or a seed |
| The ladder of the lookout tower | Shoot it with the Slingshot (or send in a Bombchu), then climb the ladder for the token |
As an adult there is a sixth at night: the Skulltula on the roof of Impa’s house. Stand in front of Impa’s door, Hookshot up to the roof of the Skulltula House, then Hookshot over to Impa’s roof (easier with the Longshot). Two more tokens belong to the Graveyard and are listed below.

House of Skulltula
The curse on this family ends as you hand in Gold Skulltula tokens. Each reward is given once, in order. At 100 tokens the father gives a Huge Rupee (200 Rupees), and he gives another every time you return after that.

| Tokens | Reward |
|---|---|
| 10 | Adult’s Wallet (holds 200 Rupees) |
| 20 | Stone of Agony (the controller rumbles near hidden grottos) |
| 30 | Giant’s Wallet (holds 500 Rupees) |
| 40 | 10 Bombchus |
| 50 | Piece of Heart |
| 100 | Huge Rupee (200 Rupees), repeatable |
The windmill
Walk up the stairs to the windmill at the back of the village and open the door. A Piece of Heart sits on the rotating platforms inside. As a child, throw the Boomerang from the doorway at an angle so it picks the heart up (you get the Boomerang in Jabu-Jabu’s Belly), which usually takes a couple of tries. As an adult you can instead get there from Dampé’s grave (below). The man who runs the windmill teaches the Song of Storms to Adult Link. Play that song inside the windmill as a child to speed the mill up and drain the well, which opens the Bottom of the Well.

The man on the roof
A man sits on the blue-vined roof of the building near the windmill. He gives a Piece of Heart to anyone who can talk to him. As a child, climb the lookout tower, face the fence beside his roof and side-hop off the right side of the tower, so you land on the tall fence; walk along the fence and climb onto the roof. As an adult, Hookshot from Impa’s roof, or from the ledge behind the Potion Shop, to the bottom edge of his roof.

Impa’s house and the cow in the cage
There is a Piece of Heart next to a cow in a cage inside Impa’s house, reached through a hole in the side wall that sits above the Cucco pen. The simplest route is the owl at the top of Death Mountain, who drops you on Impa’s roof; the steps are in the Death Mountain chapter. The cow can be milked with Epona’s Song once you own a bottle.

Grotto holes in the village
Bombs dropped in the middle of the village, a little way from the large tree, open a hole with two ReDeads and a chest that appears when both are dead; play the Sun’s Song to freeze them first. The fenced area in the north-east corner has the open grotto mentioned above: a chest, a Gossip Stone, a fish and bugs.

Kakariko Graveyard
Daytime and the Graveyard Boy
The Graveyard is the passage to the right of the windmill. A boy guards the graves by day, so none of them can be pulled until night. He is also the one who buys the Spooky Mask in the mask chain: put the mask on and talk to him, and he mistakes you for Dampé.

Graveyard Gold Skulltulas
The one on the patch of soft soil on the left side is available at any time as a child: release a bug on it. The second is at night on the right-hand wall near the Royal Family’s Tomb; kill it and bring the token in with the Boomerang. There is no adult token in the Graveyard.

The Royal Family’s Tomb and the Sun’s Song
At the back of the Graveyard stands the largest tombstone. A storm rolls in as you approach it. Stand on the Triforce symbol in front and play Zelda’s Lullaby: lightning blasts the tomb open and a hole appears. Drop in. The first chamber has Keese; kill them and the locked door opens. In the next chamber ReDeads and poisonous floor guard the way. Do not fight them; they freeze you with their scream. Read the bones on the floor, because Navi points out two that give advice. At the end a poem is carved in the wall; read it to learn the Sun’s Song (N64: C-Right, C-Down, C-Up, C-Right, C-Down, C-Up).

The Sun’s Song changes the time of day (day becomes night and night becomes day), freezes ReDeads and Gibdos in place and calls a big healing fairy when you play it where Navi turns green. In the first chamber of the tomb there is also a chest with Bombs that appears once two torches are lit with Din’s Fire.

The ReDead grave Piece of Heart
At night, find the back row of the small graves and pull the fourth one from the right. A hole opens in front of it. Drop in, and a ReDead stands guard inside. Play the Sun’s Song to freeze it, and a chest with a Piece of Heart appears behind it. You can then take the chest or kill the ReDead. Either age can do this; you must be there at night and have the Sun’s Song.

Free Hylian Shield and a fairy fountain
In the front row, the second grave from the left has three flowers in front of it. At night, pull it back, jump into the hole, and open the chest: it holds the Hylian Shield, the one the gate guard hinted at. If you already own the shield the chest holds a Blue Rupee. Behind the chest there is a wall you can bomb to find a pool of healing fairies.

Dampé’s Gravedigging Tour
In the evening, from about 6 pm to 9 pm game time, the gravekeeper Dampé walks around the Graveyard with a shovel. Talk to him and pay 10 Rupees, and he digs where he stands, but only on a patch of soft earth, not on the stone path. Each dig turns up a Rupee (1, 5, 20 or sometimes 50) or, once, a Piece of Heart. The Heart Piece is in one of the soil patches along his path and can be in either half of a patch, so dig at each patch he walks over. If you do not hit it, leave and re-enter the Graveyard to reset the tour. Two random gravestones also hide 5 Rupees each time you re-enter.

Dampé’s race (adult)
As an adult, pull Dampé’s own grave (back row, north side) and drop down into the room with four pillars. Dampé’s ghost challenges you to follow him through the catacombs. Chase him to the end. The giant chest at the finish holds the Hookshot, the key tool for the rest of the game. Beyond it, a large blue block blocks a staircase: play the Song of Time and climb up to the windmill, where you can collect the windmill Piece of Heart. Return to the grave later and finish Dampé’s race in under a minute (the second attempt onwards) for another Piece of Heart. The Longshot gives a shortcut.

The Heart Piece on the ledge
On a high ledge in the Graveyard, a crate holds a Piece of Heart. As a child, plant a Magic Bean in the soft soil near the ledge, and as an adult ride the plant up and jump to the crate. As an adult with the Longshot, you can stand on the second grave next to the edge and shoot straight at the crate. The Hookshot doesn’t reach.

Adult Kakariko
When you come back as an adult the village has changed. The shops open: the Bazaar and the Potion Shop (they take over the Market’s Potion Shop stock), Granny’s Potion Shop (Blue Potion, 100 Rupees) and the Shooting Gallery. Anju at the Cucco pen gives you a Pocket Egg to start the trade to the Biggoron‘s Sword; Talon, now asleep in a house in the village, takes the Pocket Cucco (see the Biggoron Sword Trading Sequence). Granny turns the Odd Mushroom into an Odd Potion. The Shooting Gallery costs 20 Rupees and, if you hit all ten targets with the bow, gives you the Bigger Quiver on the first win (40 arrows); afterwards it pays 50 Rupees.

Hyrule Castle Town Market
Enter and look around
The Market is behind the drawbridge, open from sunrise to sunset. The town square is full of stalls and shops, and a fountain stands in the middle. Just inside the entrance is the guardhouse beside the drawbridge. Break its vases for Rupees, and roll into the lone crate beside the soldier: a Gold Skulltula falls out (child, any time). The Temple of Time stands in the north-east of the square, and the road to the castle leaves to the north. Two men chat near the entrance: one tells how he got stuck in a small opening in the castle wall, and Malon, by the fountain, says her father has still not come back.

Bazaar
The Bazaar sells the Hylian Shield, which you will need on Death Mountain. Do not buy the shield if you can help it: the gatekeeper in Kakariko reduces the price, and the Graveyard chest gives a free one. This is the stock:

| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Hylian Shield | 80 Rupees (10 to 40 less after the gatekeeper’s word) |
| Bombs (5) | 35 Rupees |
| Arrows (10) | 20 Rupees |
| Arrows (30) | 60 Rupees |
| Arrows (50) | 90 Rupees |
| Deku Nuts (5) | 15 Rupees |
| Deku Stick (1) | 10 Rupees |
| Recovery Heart | 10 Rupees |
Potion Shop
Most of the Potion Shop’s stock needs an empty bottle. In the child era it sits in the Market, and in the adult era it moves to Kakariko.

| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Red Potion | 30 Rupees |
| Green Potion | 30 Rupees |
| Blue Fire | 300 Rupees |
| Fairy’s Spirit | 50 Rupees |
| Bottled Bug | 50 Rupees |
| Fish | 200 Rupees |
| Poe | 30 Rupees |
| Deku Nuts (5) | 15 Rupees |
Bombchu Shop
The Bombchu Shop opens only at night. It sells Bombchus in packs of 10 for 100 Rupees and packs of 20 for 180 Rupees, up to four of each, and the stock does not refill. You can only afford this once you have the Adult’s Wallet, so most players use the free 10 Bombchus from the House of Skulltula or the bowling prizes instead. All shop tables are collected on Shops and Prices.
Happy Mask Shop and the mask chain
The Happy Mask Shop opens once you have shown Zelda’s Letter to the Kakariko gate guard. The salesman does not sell masks. He lends them, you sell them on to people around Hyrule, and you pay him back what the mask cost before you can borrow the next one. You can borrow any mask again later, but each model sells only once.

The shop begins with only the Keaton Mask on the shelf. Borrow it for nothing and take it to the gatekeeper in Kakariko, who buys it for 15 Rupees. Pay the salesman 10 back and borrow the Skull Mask, which you take to the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods.

| Mask | Pay at the shop | Sell to | You get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keaton Mask | 10 | Gatekeeper at the Death Mountain gate, Kakariko | 15 (profit 5) |
| Skull Mask | 20 | Skull Kid on his stump, Lost Woods (first room to the left) | 10 (loss 10) |
| Spooky Mask | 30 | The boy in Kakariko Graveyard, by day | 30 (even) |
| Bunny Hood | 50 | The Running Man in Hyrule Field, who rests at night once you have the Ocarina of Time | As many Rupees as it takes to fill your wallet |
The Skull Kid will not talk at first. Stand on the stump across from him and play Saria’s Song, which gives you a Heart Piece (see Kokiri Forest), and then he trades. The Running Man runs counter-clockwise round Lon Lon Ranch by day, so search clockwise and use the Sun’s Song to bring the night when you meet him. After the Bunny Hood is sold, you pay 50 Rupees and the salesman rewards you with the Mask of Truth, a mask from the Sheikah that lets you read Gossip Stones. Three more masks, the Goron, Zora and Gerudo Masks, are then free to borrow, but they cannot be sold. Full details and the Forest Stage rewards are in the Mask Trading Sequence and the Gossip Stones page.

Shooting Gallery (child)
The Shooting Gallery costs 20 Rupees. Rupee-shaped targets pop up in a fixed pattern as a child; hit all 10 with the 15 seeds you are given. Hit 8 or 9 and you get a free replay, hit all 10 and the owner gives you a Bullet Bag upgrade. If you did the Lost Woods target first, this is the 50-seed tier. After that the prize is 50 Rupees. The Slingshot’s seeds land a little low, so aim just above each target. As an adult the same prize is the Bigger Quiver, in Kakariko.

Treasure Chest Game
The Treasure Chest Shop is open only at night. Pay 10 Rupees to enter, and in each of the first five rooms pick one of two chests. One holds Rupees and ends the game; the other holds a key to the next room. Reach the sixth room and the chest there holds a Piece of Heart (50 Rupees on any later win). With the Lens of Truth you can see which chest has the key, so do this after the Bottom of the Well. Without the Lens it is a 1 in 32 chance.

Bombchu Bowling Alley
The Bombchu Bowling Alley, marked by a Bombchu above its door, opens after you finish Dodongo’s Cavern. Pay 30 Rupees and you get 10 Bombchus. Steer a Bombchu into the hole at the far end three times to win; a spiked trap slides across the first lane, a small Cucco appears in the second and a large one in the third. The prize is revealed once you have paid and before you start. The prizes are: a Piece of Heart (once), a bigger Bomb Bag (once), 10 Bombchus, 10 Bombs or 50 Rupees, so keep playing until both one-time prizes have come up.

Richard the dog
At night a woman in the back alley is looking for her dog. The white dog (Richard) is on the square near the Bazaar. Touch him and he follows you; any other dog following you scares him off, so slip past the others or hug the walls. Lead him to the house at the end of the back alley and talk to the woman for a Piece of Heart. Later visits pay 5 Rupees.

The Market as an adult
After you become an adult, Castle Town is a ruin, the shops are closed, and ReDeads wander the square. The Temple of Time still stands at the end. In the old guardhouse by the Market drawbridge, the Poe Collector now runs his Ghost Shop, where you sell Big Poes for the last bottle (see Big Poes). The Prelude of Light warps to the Temple of Time.
