The first chapter of Spirit Tracks takes you from your graduation morning in Aboda Village to the doorstep of the Tower of Spirits. You learn to roll, drive your first train to Castle Town, collect your engineer’s certificate from Princess Zelda, smuggle her out of the castle, lose her body to Chancellor Cole, and then, with her spirit as your only companion, pick up the Spirit Flute, a sword and a shield before fighting through a cave to the Tower. Nothing here is missable for good.

Table of Contents
Aboda Village
Start of the game and leaving the house
Sit through Alfonzo’s lecture in Link’s house and walk out the door when he lets you go. Tap the ground where you want Link to go and he follows the stylus.

Girl’s rocks and the red Rupee
Head along the cobbled path to the girl in the pink dress who is clearing rocks beside her house. Tap a rock to lift it, then tap the direction you want to throw it. Clear the rocks and she hands over a red Rupee worth 20.

Learn to roll and get the Bee Larvae
The boy with the purple hair near the palm trees teaches you to roll: tap the screen twice in the direction you want to go. Roll into the tree that has the hive hanging from it and a Bee Larvae drops to the ground. Keep your rolls short and do not chain too many, or Link gets dizzy and stumbles.

A treasure from the boy
Keep talking to the boy after the roll lesson and he gives you a common treasure, such as a Wood Heart or a Star Fragment. Bee Larvae and the other odd items you pick up are treasures: you cannot use them, but Linebeck and the shopkeepers pay for them, and later they become ingredients for train cars. The treasure list shows what each one is worth.

Aboda stamp station
Aboda has a stamp station just west of Alfonzo’s house, but you do not own a Stamp Book yet, so there is nothing to stamp. Niko gives you the book much later, after you bring Alfonzo home, and the stamp station page covers the full set. Head for the train station when you are ready to go.

First train ride to Castle Town
Train controls
Alfonzo meets you at the train and announces that you have 300 seconds to reach Castle Town. Slide the gearbox lever up to go faster, down to slow, and to the bottom to stop or back up. Tap the whistle handle and pull it down to blow the horn, which scares animals off the track.

Rail switches and braking
At each fork, tap the left or right arrow on the rail switch before you reach the junction, and check the map on the lower screen to see which branch goes to the castle. Several different routes reach Castle Town, so pick one and avoid any train coming the other way. Slow down in good time and stop at the station; if you overshoot, shift into reverse.

Castle Town
Treasures in the plaza
You arrive at the station and step off into the plaza. Treasure chests sit on the rooftops, but you cannot reach them yet, so wander the plaza, talk to the townsfolk and move on.

Mailbox and Postmaster’s letter
Near the back of town a mailbox bounces. Tap it and the postman pops out, introduces himself and hands you a letter. Open your menu to read it: the Postmaster explains the new postal service and asks you to be kind to the postman. More mail turns up later, so check it now and then.

Hyrule Castle: the Royal Engineer ceremony
The castle gate
Cross the bridge to Hyrule Castle and tell the gate guard you are here for the graduation. At the inner gate a guard refuses you until the chancellor’s voice cuts in and waves you through.

Receive your Royal Engineer’s Certificate
Walk up the red carpet to the throne room. Stand before Zelda and listen while she makes you a Royal Engineer. She gives you the Royal Engineer’s Certificate and, while Chancellor Cole is watching you, quietly slips you a folded note with a warning to beware of him.

Zelda’s note and the secret path
Read the note and copy the route
Open the note from your menu. It asks you to meet Zelda in her quarters at the top of the castle and shows a secret path on a small map. Copy the route onto the lower screen with the stylus, then follow it through the castle, leaving the throne room and staying out of sight of the guards.

Zelda’s quarters and the Recruit Uniform
Climb the stairs to Zelda’s quarters. She explains that something has gone wrong with the Tower of Spirits, and that a sage who lives there may be able to help. She asks to be taken to the Tower by train and gives you a Recruit Uniform, so you can pass as a guard while she slips away. Change into it and leave the room together.

Sneaking Zelda out of the castle
How Link and Zelda move
Link wears the uniform and walks in front, while Zelda follows. Whenever you need her to take a different route, tap the marker at her feet and draw the path you want her to walk with the stylus, avoiding walls, or she gets stuck. Guards see Link as a fellow soldier but will spot Zelda if she walks into their line of sight. Tap the Call button to bring her back to your side.

Past the guards
Talk to each guard to make him turn away, then draw Zelda’s path behind him. A guard who will not turn to chat can be lured instead: pick up a boulder, throw it far to the side, and send Zelda through while he goes to look. When you reach the courtyard exit, Zelda says it is time to board the train.

Cole, Byrne and Zelda’s spirit
The tracks disappear
The train sets out toward the Tower of Spirits, but the Spirit Tracks vanish ahead and the train stops in a field. Cole and his armoured companion Byrne then appear. After you are knocked down, Byrne separates Zelda’s spirit from her body and Byrne takes her body away. You cannot do anything during these scenes, so just watch.

Wake up in Hyrule Castle
You wake up in a bed in Hyrule Castle with the Teacher. Talk to him, then leave the room and walk down to the first floor. Guards cannot see or hear Zelda’s spirit, only you can, so she stays beside you from now on. Follow her upstairs to her quarters.

Get the Spirit Flute
In her quarters Zelda’s spirit shows you the Spirit Flute, an heirloom of the royal family, and asks you to take it with you. This is the instrument you use to play songs for the Lokomo, and you will learn its first songs soon. The flute songs page lists them all. The flute goes into your Items menu at once.

Recruit’s Sword and the Shield
Treasures and Rupees on the second floor
Before you leave the castle, look around for chests. Two hold 20 Rupees each (one past the first guard, one in the bottom-left corner of the stairs room), and others hold random treasures. You want about 80 Rupees for a shield, so cut grass and smash pots along the way.

Get the Recruit’s Sword from Russell
A guard at the back door stops you from going outside without a weapon and sends you to the barracks. Speak to Captain Russell, who hands over the Recruit’s Sword after you ask for it. He then runs you through a short lesson on the three basic attacks: the targeted attack, which locks on to an enemy, the side slash, and the spin attack. Defeat the guards with each attack to pass.

Buy the Shield
Once you have about 80 Rupees, buy the Shield for 80 at the shop in the north-east of Castle Town. Hold the shield up to block weak hits and projectiles. A shield cannot stop strong attacks, but it is still the best protection you have right now. Other shops sell it later too, and you can read about items and equipment in the reference section.

Hidden Castle Path to the Tower
Through the back door
Return to the back door with the sword at your side and the guard lets you through. Outside, a guard is fighting monsters and shouts for help. Cut down the creatures, then talk to him: the old path to the Tower is blocked by rockfalls and he is not sure where it was.

Bomb flowers and the cave entrance
Pick up a bomb flower by tapping it, run, then tap in the direction you want to throw it. Throw one at the middle of the north wall to blow open the entrance, then step into the tunnel. A title card reads Tunnel to the Tower, and Zelda’s spirit remarks that it looks like the right place.

Cave enemies
Inside the cave a Keese flaps overhead, and four red Chuchus come up out of the ground. Each dies to one hit, so a spin attack clears all four at once.

Block puzzle and the small key
The locked door ahead needs a small key. A floor switch pops back up unless something holds it down, so push the movable block onto it. That opens the way to a chest holding the small key. Take it and unlock the stairwell door.

Spinuts and the four-switch puzzle
The next room has four switches guarded by Spinuts, and the signs there give the order to hit them. Go right past the bomb flowers for a chest with 20 Rupees, then come back, defeat the Spinuts and hit the switches one at a time in this order: right, top, bottom, left. Hitting them in a circle does not work. Once they are all hit, the way opens to the stairs.

The rats and the Tower of Spirits
On the last stretch Zelda hears squeaking and two purple rats run at her. Swipe them away with your sword and she thanks you. Walk out through the big door to the foot of the Tower of Spirits, where the next chapter begins.
