The first quest has more than a dozen merchant caves on the overworld, and each stock list is sold in several of them. Three stock lists include the Magical Shield, and each one charges a different price. The Blue Candle, the Key and the Blue Ring are sold only in the caves listed below, so buy them while you are passing through. Money is limited to 255 rupees, so plan purchases around the shops.

Shop stock and prices
Magical Shield, Key and Blue Candle shops
These shops carry the Magical Shield for 160 rupees, a Key for 100 rupees and a Blue Candle for 60 rupees. The one you want first is the open cave at G7, one screen north-west of the start. The same stock is sold in the cave at M1 in the far north-east and at O6 on the east side of the map.
Magical Shield, Arrows and Bombs shops
These caves sell the Magical Shield for 130 rupees, Arrows for 80 rupees and a set of four Bombs for 20 rupees. They are open caves, at P7 on the east coast, E5 in the middle, F3 on Death Mountain and K5 by the central lake. Arrows are required for the Bow, and each shot costs one rupee after you buy them.
Magical Shield, Monster Bait and Heart shop
This hidden shop sells the Magical Shield for 90 rupees, Monster Bait for 100 rupees and an ordinary heart for 10 rupees. It is the cheapest Magical Shield in the game. The nearest entrance is the tree in the top-left corner of G5 (burn it), a few screens north of the start; the same stock is under a burned tree at N5, behind a bombed wall at G3 and behind another at C6.
Hidden ring shop
Touch the middle Armos of the top row at E4 to move it, then descend the stairs under it. The shop sells a Key for 80 rupees, Monster Bait for 60 rupees and the Blue Ring for 250 rupees. The Blue Ring halves the damage you take, so it is worth saving up for.
Old Woman potion shops
Once you show the Letter to the Old Woman, she sells a Red Potion for 68 rupees and a Blue Potion for 40 rupees. The nearest cave is the open one at E7. Others sit behind bombed walls and burned trees at N1, H3, L5, I8, E1 and D4. Bring at least 40 rupees to buy the Blue Potion, or 68 for the Red one.
Best prices for each item
Magical Shield
You can buy the Magical Shield for 90 rupees (the hidden shops at G5, N5, G3 and C6), 130 rupees (the open arrows-and-bombs caves) or 160 rupees (the Blue Candle caves). Buy it at 90 rupees when you pass a hidden shop, and leave the other two for later if you are short on money.
Bombs and Arrows
Bombs are 20 rupees for four at the arrows-and-bombs caves, and Arrows are 80 rupees there too. Your bomb capacity starts at 8 and grows to 16 with two upgrades costing 100 rupees each, so save money for those if you plan to use many bombs.
Blue Candle and Key
The Blue Candle costs 60 rupees and is sold at G7, M1 and O6, which also sell the Key for 100 rupees. The ring shop sells a Key for 80 rupees, so buy keys there if you are passing through and have spare money.
Second Quest differences
The stock lists and prices stay the same in the Second Quest, but some shops move. The Blue Ring shop leaves the E4 Armos, whose stairway now leads to Level 2, and reopens at P1 in the far north-east with the same Key 80, Blue Ring 250 and Monster Bait 60. The O1 cave stops giving the Letter and becomes a Blue Candle shop instead. The first quest’s Level 3 door at E8 also becomes an ordinary Blue Candle shop.
