The Hylian Set is the cheapest outfit you can buy, and it is worth wearing only for its defence: it carries no effects and no set bonus. All three pieces are sold in Hateno Village and Kakariko Village, and with Bokoblin parts and Amber they climb to 20 defence per piece.

Where to buy
Hateno Village (map position x 3593, z 2122, square I-7) has the Ventest Clothing Boutique, and Kakariko Village (x 1806, z 985, square G-5) has the Enchanted armour shop. Both stock all three pieces at the same price, so buy from whichever you reach first.
Upgrade materials and defence
Every piece costs the same, so a full set at four stars needs three times these totals. Base defence is 3 before any upgrade.

Bokoblin parts drop from any Bokoblin, so camps near Kakariko and along the roads are the easiest farm. Amber comes from ore deposits and is the only item here that needs mining.
Where to upgrade
Upgrades are done at a Great Fairy Fountain. Four fountains exist: Cotera near Kakariko Village (map position x 1976, z 846, square G-5), Kaysa in Tabantha (x -3540, z -747, B-4), Mija in Akkala (x 4112, z -1378, J-3) and Tera in the far south-west of the Gerudo Desert (x -4870, z 3825, A-8). Awakening them costs 100, 500, 1,000 and 10,000 Rupees in the order you wake them, and every fairy you awaken raises the highest star level you can reach by one, up to four stars. Each piece is upgraded one star at a time, and the materials are used up per piece.
