| Great Fairies | 4: Cotera, Mija, Kaysa and Tera |
|---|---|
| Cost to wake | 100, 500, 1,000 and 10,000 rupees, in the order you wake them |
| What they do | Upgrade armor with monster parts, gems and other materials |
| Max upgrade | Four stars, once all four fountains are open |
| Bonus fairy | Malanya the Horse God, 1,000 rupees, revives dead horses |
Each Great Fairy sleeps inside a giant closed flower. Pay the rupee fee and she blooms into a fountain where you can strengthen your armor. The fee depends on how many fountains you have already opened, not on which fairy you reach, and every fountain you open raises the highest upgrade level that every fairy offers.
Costs and upgrade levels
| Fountain woken | Fee | Armor can now be upgraded to |
|---|---|---|
| First | 100 rupees | 1 star |
| Second | 500 rupees | 2 stars |
| Third | 1,000 rupees | 3 stars |
| Fourth | 10,000 rupees | 4 stars |
The fee is paid only once, to wake the fairy. Upgrades themselves cost materials, not rupees. The materials depend on the armor and the level: monster parts, insects, gems, ancient parts and, for the last star on rare sets, dragon parts or Star Fragments. Each upgrade also adds a star to the armor piece and raises its defense. Pieces must be upgraded one star at a time.
Where to find them
| Great Fairy | Region | Where | Map position (x, z) | Square | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotera | Dueling Peaks | In the hills above Kakariko Village, in a clearing just past Ta’loh Naeg Shrine. | 1976, 846 | G-5 | |
| Mija | Akkala | Lake Akkala, in a grove of trees just east of Dah Hesho Shrine; you can spot it from Akkala Tower. | 4112, -1378 | J-3 | |
| Kaysa | Tabantha | Piper Ridge, south of Lake Totori and Rito Village. The flower bud can be seen from the south side of Tabantha Tower, and you can glide down to it. | -3540, -747 | B-4 | |
| Tera | Gerudo Wasteland | Beneath the Great Skeleton at the far south-western tip of the desert, beside Hawa Koth Shrine. You need heat and cold protection and a Sand Seal. | -4870, 3825 | A-8 |
The map markers for the four fountains sit at these coordinates (x grows east, z grows south). You can visit them in any order; the 10,000-rupee fee falls to whichever fairy you wake last.
How to wake a fairy
Reach the flower
Walk up to the closed flower bud. Small pink Fairies hover around it; you can catch them if you sneak up quietly.
Pay the fee
Speak to the fairy and agree to pay. You need the full amount in your pouch. The flower opens and the fountain is revealed.
Upgrade armor
Choose the upgrade option, pick a piece of armor and hand over the listed materials. Each upgrade adds one star and raises that piece’s defense. You can return to any open fountain for more upgrades.
Malanya, the Horse God
Malanya is a different kind of fairy: the spirit of the Lake of the Horse God. Her spring lies just east of the Horse God Bridge, south of Highland Stable (x 801, z 3704, map square F-8). She asks a flat 1,000 rupees whether or not you have woken any Great Fairies. Once awake she revives any registered horse that has died, including the White Horse and Epona. The first revival is free; each later one costs an Endura Carrot.
Good to know
- Every fairy offers the same upgrades; the fountains differ only in where they are.
- Some armor, like the Ancient Set, needs materials from Guardians; plan the trips before paying for the last fountain.
- Toren at Tabantha Bridge Stable will pay you 500 rupees to make an offering to the Great Fairy at Piper Ridge, a useful way to fund the next fee.
