The drained well in Kakariko Village hides a short, dark dungeon with no boss reward and no Heart Piece, but it holds the Lenses of Truth, which later chapters lean on. You drop in from the well shaft, find the Dungeon Map on B2, learn where Zelda’s Lullaby opens a path, beat Dead Hand for the Lenses, then use them to find the Compass, two small keys and three Gold Skulltula tokens before climbing back out.

Entering the well in Kakariko Village

Reach the tunnel at the bottom of the well

Come as a child after you have played the Song of Storms for the Music Man, which stops the windmill and drains the well. Walk to the well in the middle of Kakariko Village and listen to the villagers: the water is gone and a tunnel is visible at the bottom. Climb down, swim along the flooded passage using the Dash and Dive prompts, then press the Enter prompt to step into the dungeon. The title card reads “Bottom of the Well”.

First corridors on B1

Read the grave marker

The first corridor leads to a Sheikah eye door. A Giant Skulltula hangs from a thread in the passage, so slash it as it drops. Break the stone tile you find to uncover a green Rupee, and check the grave marker beside it. It reads that a wall is not merely a wall and that you should not accept only what you see as truth, which tells you to test the walls in this dungeon.

Walk through the false wall and drop to B2

Push on the walls as you follow the corridors. One of them lets you pass straight through, and Navi is startled that you went through it. Smash pots along the way for refills, take the passage past the carved stone sign, and keep going until the floor gives way. Navi cries out about a pitfall and Link lands in the water on B2.

B2: green water and the Dungeon Map

Swim the green pools and use bombs

B2 is a run of green-lit pools, boulders and narrow ledges. Use Dash and Dive to cross the water, and carry bombs, since the boulders blocking some passages need an explosion. A red creature crouches by the green pool and a rock-backed one lurks nearby, so deal with them from the shore. Follow the walkways to the far side, where a lone chest sits in the corner.

Dungeon Map

Dungeon Map

Open the chest at the end of the green passage. It holds the Dungeon Map, and the box tells you that you now have a detailed map of the area with your location marked by an arrow. The map shows B1 and B2 separately, and you can change floors on the map screen.

Bomb

Pick bombs and climb to B1

Before leaving, slash the bushes in the lantern-lit rooms past the chest. Some drop bombs, which takes your bomb bag from about five up to seven. Defeat the red enemy that flashes when struck and take the heart it leaves, then follow the dark corridor to a stone shaft with a ladder. Climb it to return to B1.

B1: Zelda’s Lullaby and the way down

Play Zelda’s Lullaby on the Triforce tile

Back on B1, a caged creature waits behind bars and another Sheikah eye door stands in the corridor. Pick up Rupees from the green water channel and continue to a stone face with waterfalls, where a Triforce tile is set into the floor. Stand on it, take out the ocarina and play Zelda’s Lullaby. A box says the water lowered, and the passage ahead opens.

Cut through the Giant Skulltula corridor

Follow the opened path through a dim tunnel and a wet hall. A Giant Skulltula blocks a narrow corridor, so attack it when it turns to face you, and keep moving so it cannot trap you against a wall. Beyond it, a Sheikah eye door marks the way back down. Open it, and the next area is the foggy room of B2.

Dead Hand and the Lenses of Truth

A pale hand rising from the fog floor with pink lock-on markers and Link ready to strike

Dead Hand boss fight: the hands

The room is thick with fog. Hands push up out of the ground and reach for you. Lock on to each one, slash each hand the moment it appears, then step back. More hands keep rising until the body shows itself.

Dead Hand boss fight: the body

Once the hands are dealt with, the pale, fanged body drags itself out of the dirt. Move in with sword swipes, then back off before it swings its arms. A few rounds of hit-and-retreat bring it down, and the blue barred gate in the fog opens when it falls.

Lenses of Truth

Lenses of Truth

A chest appears in the cleared room. Open it for the Lenses of Truth: the item box announces that you found them and explains that they use magic power when worn and reveal hidden mysteries and other secrets. Navi suggests the eyes of truth may help here. Equip the Lenses from the Items screen and wear them to see through false walls, hidden chests and invisible enemies.

Hidden rooms on B1

Use the Lenses to find the way on

Leave the fog room and climb the ladder back to B1. A chest in the first room holds a purple Rupee worth 50. Wear the Lenses as you walk, because the passages here are hidden: walls to pass through, a grate over a glowing pit to open, and a caged Giant Skulltula you can leave alone. Work your way through the dim corridors, switching the Lenses off to save magic when the way is plain, until you reach a room with a chest in it.

Compass

Compass

Open the chest in the hidden room to get the Compass. The box says you can use it to find the treasure chests and hidden secrets in this dungeon, so chests now show on the map.

Small Key

Small key

Continue through the Lenses-only passages to a candlelit niche lined with skull-shaped decorations. A chest sits there that you cannot see without the Lenses. Open it for a small key. The box says it unlocks doors in this area but will not fit locks you find elsewhere. The key counter shows 1.

Cross the B2 pond and climb back to B1

A Beamos in the corridor fires a blue beam, so do not stand in its line. Head down to B2 again, wade through the moss-covered pond and open the Sheikah eye door on the far shore. Beyond it is a ladder up to B1. Climb the ladder and carry on to another eye door in the corridor, with your small key still in hand.

Webbed crypts, Like Like and the second key

Open the eye door and follow the grate

Wear the Lenses at the eye door and the barred hall beyond it becomes clear. Pass through, cross the water, and climb the grate on the far side. It leads into a crypt hall whose walls are crowded with cobwebs and stone coffins.

Fight the Redeads and use the pots

A Redead moves among the coffins in this hall. Keep your shield up and strike when it comes within range, then step away before it can close in again. Pots stand against the walls, and you can lift one and Throw it when a Redead is in range.

Small Key

Small key

Look in the wall recesses of the coffin hall. A slab in one of them pulls out to reveal a second small key. Link raises it overhead, and the counter shows 2. Both keys are used up before you leave the well, so keep them.

Like Like and your Deku Shield

Along the way, a chest in a Lenses-only room holds five bombs. Then a tall, sack-like monster with a spiky top waits in a torch-lit room. It swallows your Deku Shield and the game warns that the shield was swiped. Strike the Like Like with the sword and dodge its grab until it collapses, and your shield drops out. Pick it up again: the box reminds you that it defends against attacking foes but burns if it catches fire.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #76

The same torch-lit room hides a token. Spot the Gold Skulltula on the wall and throw the Boomerang at it. The token drops into view, and you collect it for Gold Skulltula #76. The box reads “You got a Gold Skulltula” and the next message says you have collected 76 tokens so far.

Locked doors and the last two tokens

Use the first key and cross the dark corridor

Go through the barred gate and use a small key on the locked door that appears while you wear the Lenses. A narrow stone corridor follows, with bats fluttering overhead. Throw the Boomerang at them if they get in your way, and stay close to the wall so you can keep an eye out for what is above.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #77

Look up while wearing the Lenses and a Gold Skulltula appears on the wall in a shaft above the corridor. Aim the Boomerang at it as soon as it shows. The token is yours and the box says you have collected 77 tokens so far. Pick up the green Rupee near the Sheikah eye door ahead, and walk on.

Use the second key on the locked door

A chained door waits at the end of the next passage. Use your last small key on it, and the counter drops to 0. Beyond lies a crypt room full of urns, skull alcoves and candles. Put the Lenses on to find what the room is hiding.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #78

With the Lenses on, a Gold Skulltula shows against the wall opposite the door. Throw the Boomerang at it and collect the token. The box says you have collected 78 tokens so far. Smash the urns for Rupees and hearts if you need them, then leave through the far side.

Leaving the well

Climb out to Kakariko Village

Open the eye door out of the crypt room, climb the grate and the ladder in the dark corridor beyond, and open the last eye door. Past it you reach the foot of the well shaft, where the banner reads Kakariko Village. Swim the pool, then climb the long stone stairway to daylight. Nothing more waits in this dungeon, so do not go looking for a boss door or a Heart Piece here.
