| Scanning | Once per amiibo figure per day |
|---|---|
| Switch on | Enable amiibo in the options menu; the rune then appears on the Sheikah Slate |
| Zelda amiibo | Summon a chest of random weapons, arrows, gems and food, plus a chance at their exclusive gear |
| Other amiibo | Non-Zelda figures drop food and materials such as fruit, mushrooms and plants |
| Special | The first scan of the Smash Bros. Link summons Epona; Wolf Link joins you as a companion |
Amiibo are an optional extra: tapping a figure or card on the controller opens a chest or, for a few, summons a companion or a horse. Epona and the amiibo-only costumes cannot be found any other way, so use this page to see what each figure unlocks.
How to scan
Turn it on
Amiibo is off by default. Switch it on in the options menu. An amiibo rune then appears alongside Bombs and Magnesis on the Sheikah Slate.
Scan the figure
Open the Slate, choose the amiibo rune and hold the figure or card against the controller’s NFC point. Zelda amiibo make a chest drop in front of you; other amiibo make food and materials drop instead. The rune cannot be used inside shrines.
Check the loot
Open the chest. Items are random from that figure’s list, and the exclusive gear is the rare part of it. While you are still on the Great Plateau you only get basic loot; the exclusives start to turn up once you have freed a Divine Beast.
What each amiibo gives
| Amiibo | Exclusive reward | |
|---|---|---|
| Link (Super Smash Bros. series) | Epona on the first scan. Register her at a stable straight away. Later scans drop ordinary Zelda-amiibo loot. | |
| Link (Twilight Princess) | Cap of Twilight, Tunic of Twilight, Trousers of Twilight. Also summons Epona on the first scan, like the Smash Bros. Link. | |
| Wolf Link (Twilight Princess) | Summons Wolf Link as a companion. | |
| Link (30th Anniversary, Ocarina of Time) | Cap of Time, Tunic of Time, Trousers of Time and Biggoron’s Sword. | |
| Link (30th Anniversary, The Legend of Zelda) | Cap, Tunic and Trousers of the Hero. | |
| Toon Link (Wind Waker / Smash) | Cap, Tunic and Trousers of the Wind and the Sea-Breeze Boomerang. | |
| Link (Skyward Sword) | Cap, Tunic and Trousers of the Sky and the Goddess Sword. | |
| Link (Majora’s Mask) | Fierce Deity Mask, Armor and Boots, and the Fierce Deity Sword. | |
| Rider Link (Breath of the Wild) | Traveler’s Bridle and Traveler’s Saddle. | |
| Sheik (Super Smash Bros.) | Sheik’s Mask. | |
| Zelda (Twilight Princess / Smash) | Twilight Bow. | |
| Ganondorf (Super Smash Bros.) | Sword of the Six Sages. | |
| Toon Zelda (30th Anniversary) | Hero’s Shield. | |
| Mipha (Breath of the Wild) | Vah Ruta Divine Helm. | |
| Revali (Breath of the Wild) | Vah Medoh Divine Helm. | |
| Daruk (Breath of the Wild) | Vah Rudania Divine Helm. | |
| Urbosa (Breath of the Wild) | Vah Naboris Divine Helm. |
Besides their exclusive items, Zelda amiibo drop assorted gear in their chests: swords, bows and shields of the Traveler’s, Soldier’s and Knight’s tiers, elemental arrows, gems and Star Fragments, and food that suits the figure (fish for the water-themed ones, meat for the Goron-themed ones, herbs and mushrooms for others). The exact pool differs per figure.
The Divine Helms stand in for the Ancient Helm: worn with the Ancient Cuirass and Ancient Greaves, all three upgraded at least twice, they give the Ancient Proficiency set bonus. A Champion amiibo’s helm only starts to appear after you have freed a Divine Beast.
Wolf Link
Scanning the Wolf Link amiibo summons him as a companion who fights enemies on his own. He appears with three hearts unless the figure has stored hearts from a finished Cave of Shadows run in Twilight Princess HD. When his hearts run out he disappears and can be summoned again the next day.
Getting Epona
Prepare
Stand somewhere with open grassland near a stable. Epona only appears where wild horses could stand, so avoid the Great Plateau, caves and shrines.
Scan the Smash Bros. Link
Use the amiibo rune and scan the Super Smash Bros. series Link. The first time, a horse appears instead of a chest. She needs no taming and can be mounted at once.
Register her
Ride her to a stable and register her. She cannot be renamed and has her own bridle and saddle. If she does not appear, move to a place where wild horses can stand and try again, or scan a different amiibo first and then the Smash Bros. Link again.
