The Sorceress of the Valley is the fourth and last Prologue battle, fought in the Valley of Seers. You capture the ruin keeps, escort an Engineer to lower a bridge, find the Boomerang to cut the vine wall, then climb to the summit where Cia calls up the giant boss Manhandla. Beat it and the story splits into three eras, which opens Land in the Sky, Land of Myth and Land of Twilight.

Before you start

You choose from Lana, Link, Sheik and Impa, with Sheik and Impa becoming playable partway through the battle, and can swap between them on the field. Bring the warrior each collectible needs: Lana for the Heart Container, Sheik for the Piece of Heart, Link for the Hard-difficulty Gold Skulltula. The first Gold Skulltula only asks for 1,000 KOs, which you pass easily here. If you want everything, clear the scenario once, then replay it in Free Mode with each warrior in turn.

Capture the keeps and open the ruins

Volga

West and East Keeps and Volga

Cia waits at the top of the ruins, so your first job is a foothold. Capture the West Keep and the East Keep. Beamos stand guard in the ruins and shrug off ordinary attacks, so use Bombs on them. Once the West Keep falls, Volga arrives and hits your soldiers hard; take him on with two warriors, and if you are chasing the Hard Gold Skulltula, make sure he falls inside the first three minutes of the battle. He retreats once beaten, leaving the two vital keeps, East Keep included, free to take.

Lower the east bridge

The way into the ruins is blocked by vines, and the other route is to lower the bridge on the east side. An Engineer sets out from the Allied Base to do it. Walk with him and cut down the monsters that head his way. When the bridge drops, you are told to cross the East Ruins Bridge and enter the ruins, and Cia sends Skilled Summoners onto the field, so clear them before they pile up.

Boomerang

Find the Boomerang in the Western Room

The path to the summit is still closed by a vine wall, and you need an item that can cut it. Take the Western Room keep; its temple holds a treasure chest with the Boomerang inside. Open it, use the Boomerang on the vine wall, and head up the ruins toward the summit. While you work your way up, the Dark Forces can retake the East Keep behind you; the Lizalfos and Dinolfos Chieftains lead that push, so defeat them before they take it. The Boomerang also reaches vine-covered spots in later scenarios, so remember it.

Manhandla boss fight

Fight Manhandla at the Allied Base

At the summit, Cia senses two Triforce pieces and summons Manhandla, the Poisonous Tree. It fires seeds at the Allied Base and charges across the sand. Fill the Magic gauge and use the Smash attack on its weak point; playing two warriors together fills the gauges faster. Keep an eye on the East Keep and the Allied Base, because they can come under attack while you fight.

Find the real Manhandla

After taking damage, Manhandla retreats underground and tentacles appear in several places. The objective becomes defeating the tentacles to reveal Manhandla, so hunt down a Manhandla Stalk and destroy it. That brings the real Manhandla up out of the sand. Do this fast: the Hard Gold Skulltula needs you to find the main body before the Allied Base falls below half health. Finish it with Smash attacks, then capture the Ruins Summit to end the battle.

Defeat 1,000 enemies in this scenario on any difficulty. The Skulltula appears outside the southern entrance of the West Temple, so go there once the KO counter passes the mark.

Only on Hard or Hero, once the original scenarios are cleared. Defeat Volga within three minutes of the start, then find Manhandla’s main body by destroying a Stalk after it runs off, before the Allied Base health drops below 50 percent. Play as Link to be safe. The Skulltula appears at the top of the central stairway in the ruins.
