The Ocarina teaches you three songs in the whole game: the Ballad of the Wind Fish, which you learn from Marin and which opens the Wind Fish’s Egg; Manbo’s Mambo, taught by the sunfish Manbo after Angler’s Tunnel, which warps you to Manbo’s Pond; and the Frog’s Song of Soul, which you buy from Mamu the frog for 300 rupees and which brings lifeless things to life. You find the Ocarina itself in the Dream Shrine in Mabe Village, so there is nothing to learn until you have visited it.

Getting the Ocarina

The Dream Shrine stands in the northeast of Mabe Village, east of the Quadruplets’ house and north of the Town Tool Shop. Three boulders block its door, so you need the Power Bracelet from Bottle Grotto (Level 2) to get in. Inside is a room with a bed. Sleep in it and you are carried into a large cavern. Cross it and dash through the green block that guards the Ocarina using the Pegasus Boots from Key Cavern (Level 3), then take the Ocarina from its chest. You can come back to the shrine at any point after Level 3.

To play, put the Ocarina on a button from the item screen. The number beside its icon tells you which song is selected, and you can change it before you play.

Ballad of the Wind Fish

Ballad of the Wind Fish

Marin teaches you the Ballad as soon as you own the Ocarina and talk to her. Until she goes with you to wake the Walrus she sings in the middle of Mabe Village, beside the weathercock; afterwards you find her singing in the square of Animal Village, and you can learn it there instead. Listen to her and the song is yours.

The song has one job in the story. Once you hold all eight Instruments, climb Mt. Tamaranch in the Tal Tal Mountain Range, stand below the Egg and play the Ballad of the Wind Fish. The Instruments circle the Egg and it cracks open. The whole sequence is in The Wind Fish’s Egg and the Finale. It is also the tune Marin sings to wake the Walrus that blocks the way to Yarna Desert, which has nothing to do with your Ocarina.

Manbo’s Mambo

Manbo’s Mambo

You learn this song right after Angler’s Tunnel. Leave the dungeon with the Surf Harp and swim one screen to the left of the entrance, where a cave opens in the water. The huge sunfish Manbo lives there. He asks whether you have an Ocarina and, when you say yes, teaches you the song. You can swim there only because you earned the Flippers in that dungeon. The scene is in the Martha’s Bay chapter.

On the overworld the song carries you to Manbo’s Pond, which lies next to Crazy Tracy’s Health Spa near Goponga Swamp. This is the only overworld destination: the song never lets you choose another spot. Inside a dungeon the song sends you back to that dungeon’s entrance. Use it to leave Turtle Rock or any other long dungeon without walking back, and to reach Crazy Tracy’s for a Secret Medicine.

Frog’s Song of Soul

Frog’s Song of Soul

Mamu the frog and his choir give a concert in a cave under the Signpost Maze, south of Ukuku Prairie, and they charge 300 rupees for it. Bring the Ocarina, the Roc’s Feather, the Power Bracelet and at least 300 rupees. At the maze entrance read the sign; each sign points at the next one in the same row or column. Jump pits with the Feather and lift boulders with the Bracelet, and when you read the last sign a staircase appears. Go down, talk to Mamu and agree to pay. The frogs sing and Link picks up the tune. You reach this point after Catfish’s Maw in the Ancient Ruins and Face Shrine chapter.

The game calls it a tune that livens up lifeless things, and it does exactly that twice. In Mabe Village, move the weathercock with the Power Bracelet L-2 and go down into the cave beneath it. Play the song next to the bones to bring back the Flying Rooster, who carries you to Eagle’s Tower. Later, play it in front of the stone head at the northwest corner of the Tal Tal Mountains to wake the turtle that opens Turtle Rock. Details are in the Eagle’s Tower and Turtle Rock chapters.
