Magic Beans are a Child-era item sold by the Bean Seller at Zora’s River. Plant one in a soft soil bed as Child, and seven years later it has grown into a leaf platform that Adult Link can ride. The leaves take you to ledges, shortcuts and hidden spots that are otherwise out of reach. Soft soil is also where Gold Skulltulas hide: release a bottled bug into a patch at night and a token pops out. Each bed below gives the spot, what the grown leaf reaches and what you can collect. The Heart Piece page and the Gold Skulltula page list everything these beds lead to.

Buying Magic Beans

The Bean Seller stands on the path toward Zora’s Domain. The first bean costs 10 Rupees and each one after it costs 10 more, so the tenth bean is 100 Rupees and the full set of ten is 550. You only need one bean per bed, but the beds with Heart Pieces are the ones to plant first. You also need bottled bugs for the Gold Skulltula soil; see Bottles.

The ten beds in detail

1. Zora’s River, beside the Bean Seller

Plant the bean in the soft soil next to the Bean Seller. Seven years later the leaf carries adult Link to the bridge near the entrance to Zora’s Domain and passes the ledge where the night-only Gold Skulltula #81 hides. It also reaches the river pillar that holds a Piece of Heart, though you can get that one by Cucco, Boomerang or Hover Boots too.

2. Kokiri Forest, beside the Kokiri Shop

The soil patch is to the side of the Kokiri Shop. Its main value is Gold Skulltula #48, which you draw out with a bottle of bugs at night. A bean planted here gives adult Link a short ride but opens nothing you need.

3. Lost Woods, first bed, west and south of the entrance, beyond the lone Skull Kid

Follow the tunnels west and then south from the Lost Woods entrance, past the field with the lone Skull Kid. The leaf crosses the area and gives adult Link a quicker way to the bridge to Hyrule Field. Releasing bugs here at night draws out Gold Skulltula #66.

4. Lost Woods, second bed, southwest of the Sacred Forest Meadow entrance, near two Business Scrubs

The bed lies in the field southwest of the Sacred Forest Meadow entrance, where two Business Scrubs stand guard. Bugs bring out Gold Skulltula #67 at night. As adult, the leaf takes you to the ledge where Gold Skulltula #68 waits.

5. Kakariko Graveyard, by the leftmost row of graves

Plant the bean below the ledge next to the leftmost row of graves. As adult, the leaf lifts you to the ledge, where a wooden crate holds a Piece of Heart. Roll into the crate to break it. Bugs here at night bring out Gold Skulltula #65.

6. Dodongo’s Cavern, at the cavern entrance on Death Mountain Trail

Blast the boulder blocking the entrance. The bed is right beside it. The leaf takes adult Link to the ledge above the cave, where a Piece of Heart waits. At night, bugs bring out Gold Skulltula #71.

7. Lake Hylia, beside the Lakeside Laboratory

The bed sits next to the laboratory. As adult, ride the leaf to the roof and climb the ladder to the Piece of Heart. At night, bugs draw out Gold Skulltula #88.

8. Death Mountain Crater, beside the Bolero of Fire warp pad

Warp in with the Bolero of Fire as Child. The heat is hard on a child, so plant the bean quickly. As adult, the leaf takes you over the rock cones, where you can jump off and grab the Piece of Heart floating nearby. At night, bugs bring out Gold Skulltula #75.

9. Gerudo Valley, lowest ledge on the far side of the river

Ride a Cucco down from the bridge to the lowest ledge on the far side, where a Gerudo maiden and her cow stand near the soil. The leaf gives adult Link a dry way to the Piece of Heart in the waterfall alcove. At night, bugs bring out Gold Skulltula #92.

10. Desert Colossus, left of the Spirit Temple entrance

As adult, the leaf tours the desert, passing the stone arch that holds a Piece of Heart and the tall dunes where Gold Skulltula #100 waits at night. Bugs at the soil bring out #99. Plant the bean as Child after crossing the Haunted Wasteland to the Colossus.

Digging with bugs

Soft soil is not only for beans. Release a bug into a patch at night and a Gold Skulltula can crawl out. You can do this at any patch, with or without a bean planted. The Gold Skulltula locations page has the full token list.
