The three Spiritual Stones

Zelda explains the stones in Hyrule Castle: the Kokiri Emerald you already carry is one of three Spiritual Stones, and all three must be offered before the Door of Time will open. The Three Spiritual Stones quest starts there and splits into two sub-quests, Spiritual Stone of Fire and Spiritual Stone of Water. The Hyrule Castle chapter covers that scene.

Kokiri Emerald

Kokiri Emerald

The Kokiri Emerald is the Spiritual Stone of the Forest, and the Great Deku Tree gives it to you at the end of the Great Deku Tree dungeon. Shoot Gohma out of the ceiling with the Fairy Slingshot and slash its eye, then take the Heart Container. Outside, the Deku Tree says he will entrust you with the stone, and the pause menu shows “Kokiri Emerald added to Key Items” with the first of three round slots filled. He explains that the monster wanted the Emerald as a key to the Sacred Realm.

Goron Ruby

Goron Ruby

The Goron Ruby is the Spiritual Stone of Fire. Darunia will not part with it until you cheer him up in Goron City: play Zelda’s Lullaby at his door, then Saria’s Song so he dances, and he gives you the Goron Bracelet. Carry bomb flowers through Dodongo Cavern, take the Bomb Bag and beat King Dodongo, then step into the blue light to the trail outside. Darunia waits there and the Ruby drops toward you in a beam of light. The box says you were entrusted with the Goron Ruby and that you have gathered two Spiritual Stones, with just one left.

Zora Sapphire

Zora Sapphire

The Zora Sapphire is the Spiritual Stone of Water. King Zora opens the way to Zora Fountain once you hand him the bottle with Ruto’s letter, then you feed a Fish to Lord Jabu-Jabu and carry Ruto through the belly to the boss arena. After Barinade falls and you take the Heart Container, you and Ruto surface in the water of Zora Fountain. She thanks you, confesses that the Sapphire is her mother’s gem meant for her future husband, and hands it over. The box reads “You were entrusted with the Zora Sapphire!”

Opening the Door of Time

With all three stones in your Key Items, go to the Temple of Time and play the Song of Time at the altar, as the Temple of Time chapter explains. The stones fly to three alcoves above the great stone door, the green Emerald on the left, the red Ruby in the middle and the blue Sapphire on the right. A golden Triforce lights above them and the door grinds open. Beyond it waits the Master Sword, and drawing it sends you seven years ahead.

The six Medallions

Medallions come after you grow up. Rauru’s Light Medallion comes first, and each of the five temples that follow ends with a sage who awakens and gives you a medallion. The Awakening the Five Sages quest tracks them, and its banner updates each time you return from a sage’s chamber.

Light Medallion

Light Medallion

Rauru gives you the Light Medallion in the Chamber of Sages after you draw the Master Sword in the Temple of Time. He explains that the Demon King can be sealed by the awakened sages and asks you to carry his resolve as the Sage of Light. The medallion rises in front of Link, the box reads “You were entrusted with the Light Medallion!” and it adds that the medallion is imbued with Rauru’s resolve as the Sage of Light. This is the only medallion that does not come from a dungeon.

Forest Medallion

Forest Medallion

Saria gives you the Forest Medallion at the end of the Forest Temple. Use the Fairy Bow on the Poe Sisters’ paintings, take the Boss Key and beat Phantom Ganon, then take the Heart Container. A light carries you to the Sage’s chamber, where Saria says she must stay to imprison Ganondorf, asks you to tell Mido she cannot keep her promise and gives you the medallion. Play the Minuet of the Forest from anywhere to warp to the Sacred Grove, the way back to the temple.

Fire Medallion

Fire Medallion

Clear the Fire Temple and Darunia gives you the Fire Medallion. Free all nine Gorons, win the Megaton Hammer, take the Boss Key and beat Volvagia, then take the Heart Container. In the blue sage chamber Darunia says he is now the Sage of Fire, a medallion appears over your head and the box says you were entrusted with the Fire Medallion. The Bolero of Fire warps you back to Death Mountain Crater.

Water Medallion

Water Medallion

Ruto gives you the Water Medallion at the end of the Water Temple. Raise and lower the water at the Triforce doors with Zelda’s Lullaby, win the Longshot from Dark Link, carry the Boss Key to Morpha and take the Heart Container. In the Sage chamber Ruto says that as Sage of Water she must stay to help bind the Demon King, then gives you the medallion with her resolve. You return to Lake Hylia at evening, where Sheik tells you the lake is pure again. The Serenade of Water warps you back.

Shadow Medallion

Shadow Medallion

Finish the Shadow Temple and Impa gives you the Shadow Medallion. Win the Hover Boots, work down through floors B1 to B4 with the Lenses of Truth, ride the ghost ship with Zelda’s Lullaby, take the Boss Key and beat Bongo Bongo. Impa greets you in the Sage of Shadow’s chamber and asks you to look after the princess. The box reads “You were entrusted with the Shadow Medallion!” and a flash returns you to the Graveyard warp pad. The Nocturne of Shadow warps you back.

Spirit Medallion

Spirit Medallion

Nabooru gives you the Spirit Medallion at the end of the Spirit Temple. You need both halves of the temple: the Silver Gauntlets as a child, then the Mirror Shield as an adult, followed by the Iron Knuckle and the sorceress sisters Twinrova. When Twinrova falls, take the Heart Container and step into the blue warp. Nabooru explains how Twinrova used her, says she will help against Ganondorf and gives you the medallion. Rauru then tells you that all six sages are awake. Play the Requiem of Spirit to return to the Evil Desert Colossus.

The sages and Ganondorf

The six sages come back in Ganondorf’s Castle. Six barriers guard the tower, one each for Spirit, Forest, Water, Shadow, Fire and Light, and the quest Light and Darkness begins. Each barrier hides a trial room that ends at a dark orb. Shoot it with a Light Arrow and the sage appears to say the evil power is gone: Nabooru, Saria, Ruto, Impa, Darunia and finally Rauru, whose last barrier collapses around the tower door.

The sages return one last time in the final fight. After Ganon falls, Rauru calls on the other sages to open the sealed gateway, and they appear on platforms around the Triforce. Ganondorf drops into a column of blue light and the sages seal him away.
