Darunia is already inside the Fire Temple, and nine of his Gorons are locked in cells all over it. Free them one by one, using the Song of Time, Bombs, the Bow and the Hookshot, until the Megaton Hammer turns up on an upper floor and opens the heavy switches. Pick up five Gold Skulltula tokens on the way, take the Boss Key from the last Goron’s cell, then beat Volvagia for the Heart Container and the Fire Medallion.

Table of Contents
Entering the Fire Temple
Enter from Death Mountain Crater
Cross the lava rocks of Death Mountain Crater with the Fairy Bow equipped and walk through the temple door. The Fire Temple title card appears over a torch-lit stair hall, and a small floor map in the corner of the screen shows which floor you are on. Climb the stairs to 1F, where lava fills the middle of the cavern and a Goron waits on the far side.

Darunia asks for help
Darunia calls across the lava. He says Ganondorf has revived Volvagia and is feeding his Gorons to it, so he will take the dragon on with his fists. He asks you to rescue the nine other Gorons held captive here. The Disaster in Goron City quest is added to Threads of Time as he leaves.

1F: the first three Gorons
Free the first Goron
Cross the stone slabs over the lava and follow the passage beyond them to a barred cell. Step on the stone switch in front of the bars to open it. The Goron inside remembers you as the kid who cleared out the Dodongos, then heads for Goron City to wait for the others. His only advice is that a stone pillar hangs from a ceiling somewhere and could be dislodged. Back outside the cell, Navi points out a chest nearby. Open it for a small key, then spend it on the locked carved door a little further along.

Free the second Goron and take a small key
Cross the lava platforms to the next cell and open it the same way, from the switch in front of it. This Goron says to use the famous Goron flowers, the bomb flowers, to blow open any odd-looking wall. Open the chest in his cell for a small key. The key counter on the right of the screen reads 1 again.

Free the third Goron and take another small key
Cross the lava platforms, blow open the cracked wall with a Bomb, and follow the passage to a third cell, where you step on the stone switch again. This Goron mentions a hole in the ceiling of a nearby room that seems to lead somewhere, though he cannot see how you would get up there without being burned. Open the chest beside him for another small key. The key counter now reads 2, and Navi says six Gorons are still to be found.

Song of Time block and the first Gold Skulltula
Play the Song of Time at the blue block
Further along, a ledge is too high to reach. Stand on the engraved floor tile, open the Ocarina, pick the Song of Time on the song screen and play it. A glowing blue block appears in front of you, and you can climb it to the ledge above. A Goron you meet later calls Time the one thing that opens the path in this temple, so play the song whenever you meet one of these tiles.

Blow open the wall
Walk through the room with the square floor tiles to the stone idol at its back wall. Set a Bomb against the idol and step back. The blast clears it, and a golden glow on the rock behind shows where a Gold Skulltula is hiding.

Gold Skulltula #55
Defeat the Gold Skulltula and pick up its token. The box says you have collected 55 tokens. The game saves as you walk back out through the stone doorway.

Climbing to the upper floors
Use two small keys and climb the mesh walls
Back in the main passage, a barred gate with a keyhole blocks the way. Spend a small key on it, then spend the second on the next lock you meet, which drops the key counter to 0. Press up against the mesh walls and use the Let Go and Jump prompts to climb them. Flame jets and pillars of fire guard the corridors above.

Push the carved block and shoot the torch
The corridors above are lit by torches and glowing crystals. Grab the carved block when the Grab prompt appears and push it into place, then equip the Fairy Bow and shoot the wall torch when the Shoot Arrow prompt shows. Keep a Bomb ready for the next rock wall you reach.

Gold Skulltula #56
On 3F, set a Bomb against the rubble wall and step away. The rock bursts and a Gold Skulltula shoots out in a shower of gold sparks. Defeat it and pick up the token. The box says you have 56 tokens.

Free the fourth Goron
The fourth Goron is sure he is about to be eaten until he takes a good look at you. He warns you that doors in this temple will fall down on you if you try to open them, so do not trust every door you see. He then reports that five Gorons are still to be found.

Compass and Dungeon Map
Compass
Open the chest in the lit room on 3F to find the Compass. It shows the treasure chests and hidden secrets of the temple on the map screen.

Dungeon Map
Walk on past the red crystals and the round lava door to a larger wooden chest. Open it for the Dungeon Map, which shows your position with an arrow. Leave through the doorway to the next area, where the game saves.

Run across the metal grate bridge
Take the lava corridors and mesh grates to a long metal grate bridge over the lava. A Run away prompt appears as you step onto it, so keep moving without stopping until you are through the stone doorway on the far side.

3F: Gorons five and six
Free the fifth Goron
Follow the corridor to a cell with a Goron inside. He takes you for a fairy at first, then recognises the kid from seven years ago. He tells you that an ancestor used a hammer to destroy the evil dragon long ago, and that you must get your paws on that hammer if you want to help Big Brother. Four Gorons are still to be found.

Take the small key from the light-beam room
Next door, open the chest in the room lit by a beam from above for another small key. The key counter reads 1.

Free the sixth Goron
The sixth Goron thought he heard explosions overhead and did not expect a Hylian to free him. His advice is about the stubborn switches around the temple: they will not move for a Goron, but they respond to something real big and real heavy. Open the chest near his cell, down on 2F, for another small key, which brings the counter to 2.

Burning bridges and the grate gate
Cross the bridges where the fire jets flare and use a small key on the chained door with the keyhole at the end of them, then walk on past the slatted wooden gate. Keep walking along the lava walkway with its red crystal and pillar of fire, and stay clear of the jets. A stone platform at the end holds a Goron and a chest.

3F: the seventh Goron and the Flare Dancer
Free the seventh Goron
The seventh Goron explains that the temple is a sacred place, rigged against anyone with bad intentions, but that Time will open the path. Open the chest on the platform for a small key.

Cross the fire hall
The next hall is lined with stone pillars, flame jets and a wall of fire. Walk between the jets as they die down, spend a small key on the chained door partway along, pick up the stone cubes where the Throw and Set Down prompts appear, and shoot the wall torches with the Fairy Bow when the Shoot Arrow prompt shows. Beyond the fire, spend your last small key on the second chained door. Past it lies a round arena with a lit brazier.

Flare Dancer mini-boss
A Flare Dancer, a spirit of blue flame, dances around the arena. Equip the Hookshot and fire it at the dancer when the Fire prompt shows, which pulls the red core out of the flame. Slash the core while it lies on the floor, and repeat until the Flare Dancer is defeated.

Ride the stone platform up
Once the Flare Dancer is gone, a round stone platform in the middle of the arena rises, carrying you from 3F to 4F. Climb the mesh wall in the passage ahead. On 4F, pick Bomb Flowers from the plants and throw them to blast the way clear, and pick up the pink crystals where the Pick Up and Throw prompts appear. This route brings you up to 5F.

Megaton Hammer
Walk the stairway to the chest
On 5F, a chest stands on a raised dais behind walls of flame. A narrow stone stairway over the lava leads up to it. Walk up it and open the large chest.

Megaton Hammer
The chest holds the Megaton Hammer, a heavy hammer used to hit or break hard objects. Equip it from the item screen and swing it when the Hit prompt appears. The game saves right after you take it.

Smash the stone blocks
Use the Hit prompt on the stone blocks that stopped you earlier, and on the carved block in the passage on 4F. Rubble flies and a rupee drops from one of them, so pick it up as you pass.

3F: the eighth Goron
Play the Song of Time at the next blue block
Another blue block closes off a wide passage. Play the Song of Time in front of it, as before, and a blue light pours over the floor. The way opens to the cells on this floor.

Hit the floor switch to free the eighth Goron
The cell on this side opens only for a hammer blow on the floor switch. Hit it with the Megaton Hammer. The eighth Goron thanks you as his brother and says that the three-tiered stone statue at the temple entrance cannot be broken by Goron bombs, so you will need something else for the job. Open the chest beside him for a small key. Only one Goron is left.

1F: the hammer room and the ninth Goron
Pound the stone idols and floor tiles
Go back down to 1F and walk into the room with the stone idols. Hit the stone idols with the hammer and knock down the flower-headed creatures that rise from the floor holes, then pound the floor tiles when the Hit prompt appears. A purple-lit block in the room shatters when you hammer it. Green rupees drop from the rubble, so collect them as you go.

Gold Skulltula #57
Smash the boulder pile in this room with the Megaton Hammer. A Gold Skulltula bursts out of the stones in a shower of sparks. Defeat it and pick up the token. The box says you have 57 tokens.

Brazier room
Go through the carved stone door into the room with a large brazier. Small fire creatures leap out of the green flames around it, so strike them down with your sword while you keep to the edge of the room. Then take the purple-lit stone door on the far side. Open the chest on the round pedestal beyond it for a red rupee.

Free the ninth Goron
The ninth Goron thanks you without knowing who you are. When he hears that Big Brother plans to take on the dragon alone, he tells you that you should help him, since you are strong enough to have come this far. Navi then says that is everyone and that the Gorons are all safe.

Boss Key
Boss Key
An ornate green and gold chest stands in the ninth Goron’s cell. Open it to take the Boss Key. The message says that with it you can enter the chamber where the boss of the dungeon lurks. Open the map screen and the boss room is now marked.

The scarecrow and the last tokens
Climb back up through the lava rooms
Return up through 2F and 3F by way of the lava platforms, the corridors and the mesh walls. Several tokens remain out of reach, and they need the Hookshot and a scarecrow to get at them.

Play the Scarecrow Song
On a ledge in a lava room, open the Ocarina and play the Scarecrow Song, the melody you made for a scarecrow. A straw scarecrow appears there. It stands where the Hookshot can grab it, so you can use it to cross to ledges you cannot climb.

Hookshot up to 5F
Equip the Hookshot and fire it at the scarecrow to cross to the far ledge. Climb the mesh walls above, using the Let Go and Jump prompts, until the map shows 5F. A dark corridor and a lava room come next.

Gold Skulltula #58
A golden glow lights up a patch of wall in the 5F corridor. Fire the Hookshot at it and the Gold Skulltula falls. Pick up the token. The box says you have 58 tokens.

Gold Skulltula #59
Walk on to the lava room beside it and fire the Hookshot at the next Gold Skulltula on the wall, when the Fire prompt appears. The token drops, and the box says you have 59 tokens.

Open the rupee chests
A treasure room on this floor holds chests of rupees. Open them to get a red rupee worth 20 rupees, a purple rupee worth 50 and more red rupees.

Check Threads of Time
Open Threads of Time and the Disaster in Goron City entry now reads that Link rescued all of the captive Gorons in the Fire Temple and that the Gorons asked him to help Big Brother Darunia. The only task left is the boss room.
To the boss door
Warp out and walk back in
The quickest way back to the entrance is to open the Ocarina and play the Bolero of Fire. It takes you to Death Mountain Crater. Walk back through the temple door to start again on 1F.

Open the boss door
Follow the lava walkway on 1F to the dragon-carved door and go through it with the Boss Key. The name Volvagia, Subterranean Lava Dragon, appears across the screen as a flaming serpent lifts its head out of the lava.

Volvagia boss fight
Volvagia boss fight: the fire holes
Equip the Megaton Hammer. The arena floor is full of lava holes, and Volvagia bursts out of one with a pillar of fire. Run clear of the burning patch it leaves. A shadow crossing the floor shows where the dragon is flying overhead, so keep moving until it comes down. Flaming rocks fall from the ceiling while it flies, so watch their shadows too.

Volvagia boss fight: hit the head
When Volvagia comes out of a hole and drops its head to the floor, its eyes glow green and markers appear around the head. Run in and swing the Megaton Hammer when the Hit prompt appears, then back away before the flames wash over you. Dodge the fire and wait for the next hole to open, then hit again.

Volvagia boss fight: the last hit
Hit the head each time it falls. The last hammer blow sets the dragon thrashing in flames, and it falls apart into bones.

Heart Container and the Fire Medallion
Heart Container
A Heart Container rises from a red platform where the dragon fell. Step into the light beneath it and the box says you got a Heart Container. You gain an extra heart and all your hearts are restored. The game saves.

Step into the blue light
A ring of blue light stands in the arena. Step into it and Navi asks whether you are ready to go back outside, with the choices Let’s go and Not yet. Choose Let’s go.

Fire Medallion
Darunia meets you in the blue sage chamber and says he can hardly believe you defeated Volvagia. He tells you that he is now called the Sage of Fire and wants to help you this time. A medallion appears over your head and the message reads that you were entrusted with the Fire Medallion. Darunia ends by promising that you are brothers forever.

Back at Death Mountain Crater
You are returned to the red pedestal at Death Mountain Crater, where the area banner appears. The Awakening the Five Sages quest is updated.
