The Great Deku Tree is the first dungeon and a short one. You climb vines to a Dungeon Map, take the Fairy Slingshot from a chest on the second floor, collect the Compass and four Gold Skulltula tokens on the way down, wake up three Deku Scrubs for a hint, then shoot Gohma out of the ceiling. The Heart Container and the Kokiri Emerald wait afterward.

Entrance and first floor

Deku Baba

Deku Babas and Deku Nuts

Walk into the tree and the Great Deku Tree banner appears. Navi explains how Deku Babas work as one rises from the floor: cut it down with a blow to its head to get a Deku Nut, or hit its stem to get a Deku Stick. Do that to the first Baba and you receive a Deku Nut. Open the item menu to equip it, then throw it to release a flash that stuns enemies. Clear the next Baba the same way and move on.

Dungeon Map

Dungeon Map

Cross the web-patterned floor and climb the leafy vine wall, pressing the Jump button to let go at the top. Follow the ledge to a large chest and open it for the Dungeon Map. The map lists the floors as 3F, 2F, 1F, B1 and B2 and marks where you stand, so open it whenever you lose your bearings. This dungeon has no small keys and no Boss Key.

Second floor and the Fairy Slingshot

Deku Scrub

Deku Scrub hint

On the second floor a Deku Scrub sits in a hollow beneath the stone tree. Hold your shield up to bounce back the nuts it spits, which brings it out of its hole. Talk to it and it passes on a tip about rolling when you land from a jump, so you take no damage. Navi calls the advice useful. A carved stone door stands beside the hollow.

Fairy Slingshot

Fairy Slingshot

Walk out along the fallen log that leads to a chest on a tree stump, and open the chest for the Fairy Slingshot. Draw it, aim and let go of the button to fire Deku Seeds. Equip it from the item menu, then use the Quick Swap prompt to trade between items. A Skulltula sits on the vine wall beside the next stone door, and Navi warns that it attacks anything that enters its territory, so keep your distance. Shoot the eye carved above that stone door with a seed and Navi calls you incredible as a ladder comes into view.

Deku Nut

Three Deku Nuts chest

Climb the vine wall and open the small chest at the top for three Deku Nuts. Cross the vine-covered log to a second small chest that holds three Deku Seeds, and pick up the green rupee growing in the plants nearby. Then take the ladder and the vines up to a stone door, press Open, and shoot the Skulltula on the vine wall behind it before you climb, until a cave with another Skulltula guarding the next door comes into view.

Third floor and the Compass

Skulltula

Skulltula above the door

A Skulltula hangs above the stone door. Navi says it will not appreciate you aiming for the tender spot on its belly, so wait until it turns around and shoot or slash the underside. Beat it and open the door to reach the third floor.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #1

Hop across the stone platforms toward the next room. A Skulltula with a cyan belly hangs near the platforms, so strike it when its belly turns toward you. In the alcove beyond, a Gold Skulltula glows on the wall. Hit it and take the token. This is Gold Skulltula #1, and Navi tells you there may be something in it for you if you keep collecting them.

Compass

Compass

The chest on the far ledge holds the Compass. It shows treasure chests and hidden spots in the dungeon, and Navi suggests checking the map afterward. Pick up the item, then go back toward the vines.

Deku Nut

Second Deku Nuts chest

Climb a short vine into the dark mushroom cave and open the small chest for three more Deku Nuts, then use the Climb Down prompt to get back to the corridor. Defeat the Skulltula along the stone wall and pick up the recovery hearts that drop. A second Skulltula on a thread blocks the passage, so strike it the same way and keep going.

Basement (B1) water room

The drop to B1

Walk along the wooden bridge at the end of the corridor and drop through the web on the floor into the water below. Navi comments that it was lucky there was water. You are now on B1. Swim over to the vine wall, where a Gold Skulltula clings to the vines, and shoot it with the Slingshot.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #2

Climb the vines to the spot where it fell and collect the token. The box tells you that you have 2 tokens so far. This is Gold Skulltula #2.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #3

Swim on and shoot the Gold Skulltula on the wall beside the barred, web-covered grate. Take the token for Gold Skulltula #3. The box says you have collected 3.

Deku Stick

Deku Stick and the first web

Light a Deku Stick on the torch pedestal and burn the web beside it. The flame dies after a short time, so go straight there. A chest on the ledge holds another Deku Stick, so you can light more than once. You will need burning sticks again further down.

Deku Scrub triplets

The order hint

A Deku Scrub hides in a leafy plant ahead. Talk to it and it will let you in on the secret of the triplets ahead: tag them in the order two, three, one. A green rupee sits in the leaves where the Scrub stood.

Eye switch and the spiked log

Shoot the eye above the stone door with a seed to open it. In the flooded room beyond a thorn-covered log hangs above the water. Swim to the round stone plate in the water and dive under it with the button shown. Navi calls it a sharp eye as the water drains away. Hop over the stone platforms beneath the thorns to the door ahead.

Skulltula and the block

Open the next door and fight the Skulltula with the cyan underbelly, hitting it when the belly is turned toward you. Then push the carved stone block into the middle of the passage to continue toward the torch room.

Torch room and Gohma Larvae

In the torch room, kill the red Deku Baba, equip a Deku Stick from the item menu and light the torches to open the gate. Another Skulltula waits in the dark passage that follows. In the next room Navi spots a Gohma Egg and warns that a Gohma Larva will hatch if you leave it. Destroy it, then kill the larvae that come out.

Burn the webs

Light a Deku Stick on a brazier and burn the webs in the room. Swing the stick (as the prompt tells you) to ignite the web. In the cave beyond, a Skulltula guards the vine wall. Shoot it with the Slingshot first.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #4

Climb the vine wall and take the token on it for Gold Skulltula #4. The box says you have collected 4 tokens, which is every token in this dungeon.

Crawlspace and the floor web

Enter the crawl hole and push the carved block, then light another stick on the torch and burn the web across the floor. You drop through it to B2, landing in the water. Swim to the stone shore.

Basement (B2) and the Deku Scrub triplets

Tag the triplets

Three Deku Scrubs stand in a row. Hit the middle one first, then the one on the right, then the one on the left. They give up and tell you how Gohma gets annoyed by things hitting its eye. A green rupee is left on the ground. Open the carved stone gate behind them.

Gohma boss fight

Gohma

Gohma, ceiling phase

Step into the dark arena and the banner reads Gohma, Parasitic Armored Arachnid. Gohma clings to the ceiling and drops to the floor now and then. Open the item menu and equip the Slingshot. When Gohma’s eye glows green on the ceiling, press Shoot Seed and hit it. The hit sends Gohma crashing down, and Navi warns that its tough natural armor is more than your Kokiri Sword can cut through.

Gohma, ground phase

While Gohma is stunned on the floor, run up and slash the eye with your sword. Back off before it recovers and goes after you. Repeat the pattern of shooting it down and then slashing. The last hits flip it onto its back with its yellow eye exposed, and it falls in a purple cloud.

Heart Container

Heart Container

A Heart Container rises from the floor in a beam of light. Take it and the box tells you that you gain an additional heart and that all your hearts are restored. Step into the light circle in the middle of the room, answer Navi’s prompt with Let’s go, and the light carries you up out of the tree.

Kokiri Emerald

Great Deku Tree

The Great Deku Tree speaks

Outside, the Great Deku Tree thanks you and explains that the monster wanted the Kokiri Emerald because it is a key to reaching the Sacred Realm. He tells you about the three goddesses, Din, Nayru and Farore, and the Triforce they left behind, then warns of the evil one who wants it.

Kokiri Emerald

Kokiri Emerald

The Great Deku Tree gives you the Spiritual Stone of the Forest. It drops into your hands and the box says Kokiri Emerald was entrusted to you. The pause menu shows it added to your Key Items.
