The Forest Temple is the first of the five temples you clear as an adult. You climb in over the vines, win the Fairy Bow on 2F, use it on the four Poe Sisters’ paintings, ride the lift in the main hall down to B2, open the frozen eye door and the chained Boss Key door, and beat Phantom Ganon. Saria then awakens as the Sage of the Forest and gives you the Forest Medallion.

Entering the Forest Temple

The entrance and the vine wall

The Forest Temple banner appears as you walk through the overgrown entrance. Enemies attack in the courtyard just inside, so keep your shield up and answer each club or claw swing with a sword slash. The corner map starts on the 1F label.

Climb the vine wall at the side of the courtyard, using Let Go and Jump when the prompts show. Near the top a Gold Skulltula hangs in the vines (see below). Then follow the narrow mossy tunnel until it ends on a stone ledge. A small key lies there: “You found a small key!” Carry it back to the ground.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #47

Near the top of the vine wall, before you enter the mossy tunnel, a token glows among the vines. Put away anything you are holding, equip the Hookshot and aim it at the token when the Fire prompt shows. The box reads “You’ve collected 47 tokens so far.”

Carved door

Walk to the wooden door wrapped in chains and press Open. The key unlocks it and is used up. A Skulltula guards the wood-paneled passage beyond, so cut it down, then walk into the main hall of the temple, a checkered room with a stone pedestal in its centre and a coloured torch at each corner of the floor.

Main hall and the Stalfos room

The main hall

The quest banner Forest Temple Mysteries pops up as you cross the hall. Note the four coloured torches (purple, blue, red and green). Each one belongs to a Poe Sister, and the pedestal between them is the lift that goes down to the basement once the sisters are beaten.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #48

After the Forest Temple Mysteries banner in the checkered main hall, climb the stairs to the wood-paneled landing above. A token glows high on the wall. Fire the Hookshot at it. The box reads “You’ve collected 48 tokens so far.”

Stalfos

Stalfos fight and the second small key

Go through the door with the green glass window into a round room full of low fog. Several Stalfos attack here with shields raised. Block their sword swings, then slash when they stagger. Lock on to the closest one and keep moving, since none of them stays still for long.

When the last one falls, a chest appears in the middle of the floor. Open it for a second small key: “You can use it to unlock doors in this area, but it won’t fit locks you find elsewhere.” Leave by the door on the far side and follow the green lit passage to a blue sealed door.

Song of Time door

Take out the Ocarina at the blue door and play the Song of Time. The message “You played the Song of Time!” appears, and the door opens onto an overgrown courtyard.

Courtyard, well and Dungeon Map

Courtyard balcony and the well

Cross the grass and climb a vine wall to a balcony on 2F. Follow the stone ledge around until you can look straight down on a round stone well, then walk along its rim and drop to the ground on the courtyard side. Purple flames drift in the air nearby.

Stand at the edge of the water. Hold Dive (the prompt reads Dash and Dive) and swim down into the well. The underwater passage leads to a stone tunnel on B1.

B1 chest

Follow the tunnel to a small stone room with a chest. An enemy attacks as you arrive, so deal with it first. Open the chest for the third small key. A ladder in the same room takes you back up to the courtyard with the key counter at 2.

Dungeon Map

Dungeon Map

Run through the flowers to the arched alcove at the far end of the courtyard. Open the chest inside and take the Dungeon Map: “Now you have a detailed map of the area. Your location is marked with an arrow.” The map shows the five floors as 3F, 2F, 1F, B1 and B2.

Blocks, ladders and the upper floors

Checker hall and the red door

Leave the courtyard through the green glass door, step on the floor switch in the barred vestibule and cross the checkered main hall. Climb the red carpeted stairs to the chained door on the far side and unlock it with a small key. Fight through the red carpeted hall beyond, where blue flames and a purple-lit enemy attack. Climb the ladder in the next chamber to reach a carved stone room on 1F with several stone blocks.

Carved stone blocks

Grab the first block that carries a swirling pattern and push it along the corridor. Walk around, grab the next block and push that one too. Keep going, then climb the ladder at the end of the corridor to reach the 3F landing. Beat the blue-flame enemy in the dark room above and follow the passage to a chained door.

Chained door and the Wallmasters

Unlock the chained door with a small key. The hall behind it is red carpeted, and Navi warns you: “Keep one eye on the floor. If you see a shadow shaped like a hand, move or you’ll be caught!” Watch the carpet and step aside as soon as a shadow appears.

Follow the red hall to the stairs and go down toward the octagonal arena on 2F, which has a glowing green octagon in its middle.

Arena fight and the Fairy Bow

Stalfos arena

Step into the arena and fight the Stalfos that attack here, several at a time. Block with your shield and strike when they swing and miss. When the last one is down a blue light rises in the middle of the floor.

Fairy Bow

Fairy Bow

Open the chest that appears on the platform in the middle of the arena to get the Fairy Bow. Navi comments, “Now you can take aim!” and an arrow counter appears with the bow on the item slot. Aim with the button the prompt shows and fire with Shoot Arrow.

Boss Key on 3F

Go back to the 3F red hall, pass the grated door and the green glass door beyond it, and enter a small red room. A large ornate chest sits on the carpet.

Boss Key

Boss Key

Open the chest and take the Boss Key: “You found the boss key!” Navi calls it a huge key. A Boss Key icon now sits beside the small key counter until you reach the matching chained door on B2.

Pool room targets and the fourth small key

Drop through the hole in the red room floor to the 1F pool room. You land in the water, so climb out and shoot the small flying enemies above the pool with the Fairy Bow. Then walk on through the ivy room, where a Gold Skulltula hangs on the wall (see below). Keep going to the purple room and shoot the enemy there.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #49

After the pool room, walk through the ivy room. A Gold Skulltula hangs high on the ivy wall. Hit it with an arrow, switch to the Hookshot, fire it when the prompt shows and take the token. The box reads “You’ve collected 49 tokens so far.”

In the stone room after the purple room, a chest appears in a pool of light. Open it for the fourth small key. Open the carved door a little further on, climb the ladder in the arched passage and walk on until you reach a corridor with a carved window.

Purple rupee chest

Shoot an arrow through the carved window and open the chest that sits in the passage. It holds a purple rupee: “Vivid and purple, it’s worth 50 rupees. What a day!” Take the ladder at the end of the corridor to get back to the upper floors.

The four Poe Sisters

Small Key

Red Poe and a small key

On 3F, shoot the eye above the sealed door with an arrow so the panel turns open, then follow the red carpet past the framed portraits to the stairs and shoot the painting with the Fairy Bow. The painting catches fire and a red Poe Sister floats out of it. Shoot her with arrows from a distance and use the sword when she comes close. A chest beside a torch in the red room holds a small key, your fifth.

Compass

Blue Poe and the Compass

Open the carved door off the red room, cross the green arena and unlock the chained door beyond it with a small key. Smash the pots in the blue room behind it, then take the blue carpeted stairs to the next wing. The painting there shows a blue Poe. Shoot it and fight the ghost the same way as the red one. Open the chest that appears in the blue room when she is gone.

Compass

The chest holds the Compass: “You can use this to find the treasure chests and hidden secrets in this dungeon!” It appears as a blue ring in your key items on the map screen.

Fairy’s Thought

Climb the stairs and ladders up to the blue hall on 3F, unlock the chained door with a small key and walk on. Light an arrow in the torch flame and shoot it at the frosted eye over the sealed door, and the door opens. A fairy’s thoughts are lingering further on: “Oooh, a fairy’s thoughts are lingering here! Do you wanna see what they’re about?” Say yes to hear “This room has such a nice and cozy feel. But it’s also a little on the damp side…” and “I wish there was a way to get some warm light in here to dry the place out nice and good.” Navi closes with “And that’s that!”

Bundle of Arrows

Pool room and the arrows

Walk down to the tiled pool room and swim across (Dash and Dive appear). Climb out onto the checkered hall with iron railings and go to the barred chest. Open it for a bundle of arrows: “These can be shot from the Fairy Bow and used to strike distant targets!”

Green Poe and the blocks

Shoot the target in the vine room, and a green painting shows its Poe. Then go into the green fog room. Grab and push the slimy blocks around until they form one shape on the floor. A green Poe appears as you finish and attacks with chains. Shoot her and slash her to defeat her.

Purple Poe

The last painting hangs in a blue passage off the main hall. Shoot it and a purple Poe flies out into the main hall, splits into four ghosts and throws magic at you. Block, shoot the ghost that carries the lantern and slash when it falls to the floor. When all four sisters are down, every torch in the hall is lit.

Scarecrow Song and a Gold Skulltula

Back to the courtyard

Leave the main hall by the red carpeted door, follow the red carpet to 3F and run along the stone corridor. Go down the blue stairs and swim the green pool, then push the carved stone block you find into place. The route ends at a ledge above the courtyard where a flower bed grows in a stone planter.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #51

Open the songbook on the ledge and play the Scarecrow Song. A scarecrow appears on a perch across the gap. Aim the Hookshot at him (“Fire”) and pull yourself over to the perch. A Gold Skulltula token is waiting there: “You got a Gold Skulltula token! You’ve collected 51 tokens so far.”

Lift to B2 and the Boss Key door

The main hall lift

Back in the main hall, all four torches burn. Step onto the pedestal in the middle, and it carries you down through B1 to B2. The corner map changes to the B2 label and a wide circular hub opens in front of you.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #50

Open the item menu on B2, select Din’s Fire and cast it at the first round window in the hub, and the doorway beside it opens. Kill the large Skulltula in the passage behind it. In the dusty room beyond, cast Din’s Fire again to burn the web away, then hook the golden Skulltula behind it with the Hookshot. The token appears: “You got a Gold Skulltula token! You’ve collected 50 tokens so far.” Navi gasps, “Whoa, 50 of them?!”

B2 red room chest

Walk into the red room off the hub and open the chest. It holds a second bundle of arrows. The corridor beyond it leads to a round window with a torch behind it.

Frozen eye door

A frozen eye switch covers the door beyond the window. Stand at the window with the torch burning behind it, aim the Hookshot at the diamond in the window when the Fire prompt shows, then equip the Fairy Bow and shoot an arrow through the torch flame at the eye. The flame melts the frost, and the barred door opens onto a long dark corridor.

Follow the corridor to the large door wrapped in golden chains. The Boss Key opens it, and the passage beyond leads to a blue gallery of framed paintings. Refill your hearts before you go on.

Phantom Ganon boss fight

Phantom Ganon

Evil Spirit from Beyond

A rider who looks like Ganondorf sits on a black horse in the gallery, then changes into a horned armoured form and gallops off. The title card reads Evil Spirit from Beyond: Phantom Ganon. The room is a round hall with an iron fence and several framed paintings on the walls. Phantom Ganon rides through the paintings, and you can only see a glowing outline of him. Keep the Fairy Bow ready.

Phase one: shoot him in the paintings

Watch the paintings and aim at the one he is galloping through. Shoot him as he comes out toward the wall. After a few hits he leaps out of the frame and the fight moves to the floor.

Phase two: return the magic ball

On the floor he hurls a ball of green magic at you. Swing your sword at the ball when it reaches you to send it straight back, which stuns him. Run in and slash him while he is stunned, then back off before the next ball. Repeat until he is defeated.

Ganondorf

Ganondorf in the void

A dark void closes around you and Ganondorf speaks: “Worthless little puppet. What a disappointment.” He calls you “one of the chosen” and says the creature you defeated “was nothing more than illusion.” Navi asks what he meant before the fog clears.

Heart Container

Heart Container

A red heart rises from the fog. Collect it: “You will now gain an additional heart, and all your hearts will be restored!” Step into the blue ring of light that opens next to it. Navi asks if you want to go back outside, so answer yes to leave the chamber.

Saria and the Forest Medallion

Saria

Saria, Sage of the Forest

The light carries you to the Sage’s chamber, where Saria waits on the platform. She explains that she was making her way through the Forest Temple when Rauru the sage summoned her here. She thanks you both, then says: “We must imprison Ganondorf from here and here alone. For a sage, that is my duty now.” She asks you to tell Mido she cannot keep her promise.

Forest Medallion

Forest Medallion

Light fills the chamber and the green Forest Medallion rises in front of you. The box reads “This medallion is imbued with Saria’s resolve as the Sage of the Forest.” Her last words appear on a white screen: “Link, please never forget: You and I, we will always be friends!”

Outside the temple

You land in the forest outside the temple. Navi wonders whether Saria is really not coming back. Walk to the Deku Tree Sprout, who thanks you and says that you and Saria freed the Forest Temple from the demon’s curse, and that this is the moment he was born.
