Inside, Zelda explains the Triforce and the Door of Time, hands over Zelda’s Letter, and Impa teaches you Zelda’s Lullaby before she shows you the way to Kakariko Village.

Hyrule Castle approach and Malon
Meet Kaepora Gaebora on the castle road
Leave Hyrule Castle Town by the road that climbs toward the castle. The HYRULE CASTLE banner appears as you reach the first slope, and Kaepora Gaebora waits on a perch beside the path. He tells you the princess is inside the castle just ahead and wishes you well. Keep following the paved road past a parked wagon and under a tree until a girl in front of a milk cart calls out to you.

Talk to Malon
Malon is sitting on a low wall beside her milk cart. She introduces herself as the girl from Lon Lon Ranch, says she is here to deliver milk, and explains that she and her father Talon usually deliver milk together. He went to drop it off at the castle and has probably fallen asleep somewhere around it. Agree to find him and wake him up. The quest Princess of Hyrule Castle then updates in the Threads of Time menu with the goal “Wake up Malon’s father at Hyrule Castle.”

Weird Egg
Malon hands you a Weird Egg to help wake Talon, and the box reads “You got a weird egg!” You can feel something moving inside it, and she tells you it will hatch if you hold on to it for a while. The cucco inside crows loudly enough to wake the soundest sleeper. Open the Items screen to read its description, then keep walking. The egg hatches by itself.

Try the castle gate
Walk up to the main gate and speak to the guard. He refuses to let a stranger in, and he lectures you about Princess Zelda and the prophecies she sees in her dreams. There is no way through here. Turn around, go back down the path past Malon, and look for a way around the outside of the walls instead.

Castle gardens and Talon
Climb the walls to the rampart
Just beyond Malon, a vine-covered rock face rises beside the path. Climb it, hop across the rock shelf at the top, and scramble up the leafy tree that leans over the cliff. From the tree, drop to the vines on the castle tower and climb those too. Follow the narrow stone rampart to a square hatch in the floor, then climb down the ladder inside it.

You land in a small tower room full of pots. Smash them for rupees, then leave through the doorway at the far end. The way out brings you into the castle gardens, on a paved path that runs along a low wall with hedges and flower beds on the far side. Follow it until the hedges close in around a stone planter.

Wake-Up Cucco
While you walk through the hedge maze, the Weird Egg hatches into a cucco that perches above Link and crows. Navi says its crow could wake even the heaviest sleeper. The Items screen now lists it as the Wake-Up Cucco, replacing the egg. You do not have to use it. The bird follows you, so bring it to Talon.

Gold Skulltula #6: garden palm tree
Beyond the hedges, walk along the flower beds toward a grassy lawn at the foot of the castle wall. A palm tree stands at the edge of the lawn, and a Gold Skulltula clings to its trunk. Circle to the side it faces, strike it with your sword and let it fall, then step up to the token. The box reads “You’ve collected 6 tokens so far.”

Follow the channel to Talon
Climb the ivy wall at the edge of the lawn and cross the vine arbor at the top. Walk on past the wooden portcullis and along the paved courtyard beside the water channel. Hug the stone ledge while you edge around the pool, then run down the dirt path along the channel. It ends at a walled dead end where a man in blue overalls lies asleep on the paving stones.

Wake Talon
Talk to the sleeping man. The cucco perches on his head and its crow jolts him awake. He says he is Talon, owner of Lon Lon Ranch, and explains that he came to deliver milk and nodded off. When he realises that he left Malon alone, he panics and runs off to find her. The quest entry updates and Talon is no longer in your way.

Drain, grounds and cellar
Push the crate to the drain
Several wooden crates sit in this dead end. Press A to grab one and push it along the path until it stands against the wall under the water spout. Climb onto the crate and then up to the ledge, where a low arched drain opening sits in the wall. Press A to enter it and crawl through the dark tunnel. At the far end, climb the ladder and pull yourself out.

Sneak past the guards
You come out on the castle grounds, where soldiers patrol the flagged courtyards. Cross the wooden walkway, run up the wide stairs and keep to the balustrade on the left. Guards pace the open paths, so wait until one turns away before you cross each stretch, and use the flower beds as cover. Head for the shaded doorway at the far side.

Beyond that doorway, you enter the castle cellar through a dim passage with barrels and shelves. A guard stands at the back of the room, so crouch behind the long counter and wait for his back to turn before you move. Leave by the far passage, then follow the vaulted corridor straight toward the bright archway at its end. The game saves as you step through.

Princess Zelda
Meet Zelda in the courtyard
Zelda is standing at a window in the courtyard below the stairs, dressed as a villager. She asks who you are and how you got in. Once she sees the Kokiri Emerald, she introduces herself as the princess of Hyrule and asks your name. She recognises you from a dream in which a boy and a fairy bring light out of the forest, and she accepts you as the messenger.

Hear about the Triforce
Keep pressing A through the cutscene. Zelda tells the royal family’s secret legend: the Triforce grants the wish of whoever touches it, so the goddesses had a sage seal it in the Sacred Realm behind the Door of Time in the Temple of Time. The royal family built Hyrule Castle to guard the temple. To open the door you need three Spiritual Stones, of which the Kokiri Emerald is one, plus the Ocarina of Time.

When she finishes, a menu lets you ask about the legend (the Triforce, the Temple of Time and the Door of Time) or about opening the door (the Spiritual Stones and the Ocarina of Time). Every topic is optional, and you can return to the menu later. Choose I’m all set to move on. The remaining stones are the Spiritual Stone of Fire and the Spiritual Stone of Water, which certain peoples in each region protect.

Look at Ganondorf through the window
Choose to continue, and Zelda leads you to a window and asks you to look through it. Inside the throne room, a man kneels between two guards: Ganondorf, the leader of the Gerudo. She believes the black clouds from her dreams stand for him and suspects he wants the Triforce. She says only the two of you can protect Hyrule, and her request is that you obtain the other Spiritual Stones.

Zelda’s Letter
Before you leave, Zelda remembers to give you something and says, “Here you are. This should aid you.” It is Zelda’s Letter, written in her own hand and signed. You can read its description under Items. The quest Three Spiritual Stones begins shortly afterward.

Meet Impa
Zelda says her attendant is named Impa and tells you not to be scared of her, because you should talk to her. Walk over and talk to Impa. She introduces herself as a member of the Sheikah and steward of the royal family. Ideally she would collect the Spiritual Stones herself, but since she cannot, she asks you to do it in her place.

Zelda’s Lullaby
Impa teaches you a song she once played to put Zelda to sleep. Take out your ocarina and listen to the demonstration, then repeat it: Y, X, A, Y, X, A. The box reads “You played Zelda’s Lullaby!” Impa explains that the song has been passed down in the royal family, so playing it proves you are tied to them. It opens things later; the Ocarina Songs page lists every melody.

Leaving the castle
Ask Zelda anything
Impa tells you to finish your business and speak to her when you are ready. Zelda is still in the courtyard, and you can ask her questions through the topic menu: the legend of Hyrule, what you need to open the door, and more. Nothing here is required. When you are done, talk to Impa again to leave with her.

Impa’s farewell
Impa escorts you out to the front of the castle and shows you Hyrule from the road in front of it. She points to Death Mountain in the distance and tells you that Kakariko Village lies at its foot, and that the Sheikah live there. Before you climb the mountain, she suggests, talk to the villagers, who should have useful things to say. She reminds you that Zelda’s Lullaby proves your tie to the royal family, then wishes you well and leaves you to set off on your own.
