Any wild horse can be tamed by sneaking up behind it, mounting it and calming it until it stops bucking. Ride it to a stable to register it, then keep feeding and riding it to fill its bond. This page covers taming, bonding, the stats of every special mount, all 15 stables and every bridle and saddle.
How to tame a horse
Stealth and stamina decide everything. Horses bolt when they notice you, so approach slowly and from behind. Plain, one-coloured horses are usually the stronger ones but are wilder; spotted or two-toned horses are gentler and have weaker stats.
Sneak up from behind
Crouch and creep toward the horse from the rear, keeping out of its line of sight. Stealth armor, such as the Sheikah set, or a Stealth Up elixir makes this far easier. Do not stand in front of the horse or run at it.
Mount it
Once you are right behind it, press the mount button. The horse immediately starts bucking. Your stamina wheel drains while you cling on, so begin with a full wheel; a stronger horse needs more stamina than a weak one.
Calm it down
Press the soothe button repeatedly until the horse stops fighting. If you are thrown off, wait for your stamina to refill or drink a stamina elixir and try again.
Register it
Ride to any stable and talk to the stable hand outside. For 20 rupees the stable registers the horse, fits it with a basic bridle and saddle and lets you choose its name. The name cannot be changed afterwards. You can keep five registered horses at once, and any of them can be fetched from any stable.
Build the bond
A horse obeys you better as its bond rises, and only a fully bonded horse can have its gear and mane changed. Riding it helps: whenever it pulls off course, steer it back and calm it to gain bond. The fast method is to dismount somewhere safe and feed it. Each apple or other fruit or vegetable you hold out adds roughly a tenth of the meter, so six to ten pieces fill it.
What a horse’s stats mean
| Stat | What it does |
|---|---|
| Strength | Charging power: how much damage the horse deals when you ride it into things. |
| Speed | Its top running speed. |
| Stamina | How many dashes (spurs) you get before it tires. |
| Temperament | How hard it is to calm. Gentle horses accept you easily; wild ones need a lot of your stamina. |
| Bond | How obedient it is. Full bond lets you change its bridle, saddle and mane. |
Ordinary wild horses roll between one and four stars in each category, and the numbers are only revealed when you register the horse. Any horse can be swapped out at a stable if you find a better one.
Special horses and mounts
| Mount | Where to get it | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horse | Wild herds on the plains of Central Hyrule, the Dueling Peaks grassland, Lake Hylia and Akkala. | Stats vary from horse to horse; wild horses have 100 health. | |
| White Horse | Among the hills around Safula Hill and Sanidin Park Ruins, across the bridge north of Outskirt Stable (map square D-5). Toffa at Outskirt Stable sets you the task. | Strength 4, speed 3, stamina 5 and a wild temperament, so you need a lot of stamina to calm it. Register it at a stable, then show it to Toffa to earn the Royal Bridle and Royal Saddle. | |
| Giant Horse | Taobab Grassland, south of Mount Hylia and west of Lake Hylia (map square D-7), among a herd of ordinary horses. | Strength 5, speed 2 and a wild temperament; it has no stamina rating. Two Lynels roam the route to the nearest stable. It can be registered but cannot be customized and wears its own gear. | |
| Epona | Only with an amiibo: the first scan of the Super Smash Bros. series Link. The Twilight Princess Link figure works too. | Strength 4, speed 4, stamina 4 and a gentle temperament, so she needs no taming. She cannot be renamed and uses her own bridle and saddle. Register her at a stable straight away. | |
| Lord of the Mountain | Satori Mountain, near the cherry tree at the summit, only when a green beam of light shows over the peak. | Cannot be registered and vanishes if you stay off it too long. It never runs out of stamina and is the fastest mount, but expect to need at least two stamina wheels to calm it. | |
| Stalhorse | At night, wherever horse-riding Bokoblins roam, especially the north-east of the Hebra mountains. | Cannot be registered and crumbles at sunrise. Mount it as you would any horse. |
You can also climb onto bears, deer and elk. They cannot be registered and run off once you dismount, and they have no sprint, so treat them as an emergency ride. Lynels can be mounted after a stun or a paraglider drop, but you will not stay on for long.

Bridles, saddles and manes
Gear is changed by speaking to a stable hand while mounted, and only on a horse with full bond. Most pieces are cosmetic. Epona and the Giant Horse cannot swap gear; the White Horse can.
| Bridle | Saddle | How to get it | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stable Bridle | Stable Saddle | Fitted when you register a horse. | ||
| Traveler’s Bridle | Traveler’s Saddle | Rider Link (Breath of the Wild) amiibo. | ||
| Royal Bridle | Royal Saddle | Reward from Toffa for bringing him the registered White Horse. | ||
| Knight’s Bridle | Knight’s Saddle | Prizes from Jini’s Horseback Archery Drill at the Mounted Archery Camp, west of Highland Stable: 20 targets for the bridle, 23 for the saddle. | ||
| Monster Bridle | Monster Saddle | Sold by Kilton, the monster parts dealer: 399 Mon for the bridle and 299 Mon for the saddle. | ||
| Extravagant Bridle | Extravagant Saddle | Prizes from Blynne’s horseback obstacle course at Highland Stable: Blynne sets time limits of 1:30 and 1:15 for the two pieces. | ||
| Ancient Bridle | Ancient Saddle | The Champions’ Ballad DLC: two buried chests (see Malanya, below). |
The Ancient set is the only gear with a real effect. The bridle gives the horse the maximum number of spurs, and the saddle lets you whistle your horse to you from anywhere. The bridle is in a chest at the foot of the cherry tree on top of Satori Mountain, and the saddle is buried behind the flower bud at Malanya Spring. Both are pulled out with Magnesis. The clue is a journal in Highland Stable.
Manes are cosmetic and available once a horse is fully bonded: Normal, Long, Mohawk, French-Braided, Braided, Floral, and Long Red, Blue, Green and Purple.
Malanya, the Horse God
If a registered horse dies, you can bring it back. Malanya‘s spring sits just east of the Horse God Bridge, south of Highland Stable (x 801, z 3704, map square F-8), across the Lake of the Horse God. She is sealed in a flower bud until you pay 1,000 rupees, regardless of how many Great Fairies you have woken. After that she revives any of your registered horses that have fallen, including the White Horse and Epona. The first revival is free; every later revival costs one Endura Carrot, which grows around her spring. Her spring is also where the Ancient Saddle chest is buried.
Quick answers
- You can have five registered horses; to add a sixth, release one at a stable.
- The fastest bond is feeding. Hold fruit or vegetables out; you do not need to drop them.
- Epona is only available with an amiibo.
- Stalhorses and the Lord of the Mountain are for fun: they cannot be kept.
