The sky is your home base for the whole game: Skyloft is the cluster of islands where you wake up, shop and take Gratitude Crystal quests, and the rest of the sky is a ring of small islands that you reach by Loftwing. This page walks through every part of Skyloft, every shop, every named sky island and the flying habits that save time. The surface regions page covers the land below the clouds.

Skyloft districts

Skyloft is a set of islands that Hylia lifted above the clouds, and its people ride Loftwings to cross the sky. The main island holds the Bazaar, the residential quarter, the plaza and the Light Tower. A second island carries the Knight Academy and the Sparring Hall, and a wooden staircase leads from there to the Isle of the Goddess and the Statue of the Goddess. The opening chapter walks you through the first visit.

Link climbs a wooden staircase between railed walkways toward purple stone ruins in Skyloft

Plaza and residential quarter

The plaza is the open space at the heart of the main island. Around it stand the houses of the people you will keep visiting: Gondo’s, Rupin’s, Sparrot’s, Bertie’s (with Luv), Peatrice’s, Piper’s, Pipit’s, Orielle and Parrow’s, Kukiel’s mill and, below the Graveyard, Batreaux’s house. Most doors open only at certain times of day, and several quests send you through them at night.

The Bazaar

The Bazaar is an enclosed market of stalls run by the Bazaar Peddler Association, and it closes at night; at night you deal with merchants at their homes instead. The shops are listed in Bazaar shops below.

Knight Academy

Knight Academy and Sparring Hall

The Academy is a two-floor building. The ground floor has the kitchen, the restroom, the classroom and the boys’ dormitory. The upper floor has the Headmaster’s room, the girls’ dormitory, a bathroom and the instructors’ rooms. The ground floor door is locked at night, so use the upper entrance. You can reach Zelda’s room only through the chimney outside, once you own the Clawshots. Hitting the bell on top of the Academy, or blowing on it with the Gust Bellows, drops a single Rupee.

The Sparring Hall stands next to the Academy. Eagus teaches swordplay there, a chest at the back holds the Practice Sword early in the game, and later Fledge runs the Pumpkin Pull minigame in front of it.

Statue of the Goddess

Isle of the Goddess and the Statue of the Goddess

The Isle of the Goddess holds the Statue of the Goddess, with the Chamber of the Sword inside. This is where Fi leads you to the Goddess Sword, and where you place the Emerald, Ruby and Amber Tablets to open each path down to the surface. Sky Keep is built beneath the statue and is exposed once you finish the Skyloft Silent Realm and place the Stone of Trials in the bird statue. When you make the final wish, the whole island breaks off and falls to the Sealed Grounds.

Waterfall Cave

The cave behind the large waterfall is where Groose’s gang hides your Loftwing at the beginning of the game. Wooden stakes block the entrance until you carry a sword, so collect the Practice Sword first. Behind the cave’s grass at the rear is a crawlspace with two Red Rupees. Once you own the Goddess’s Harp, play it near the patch of Blessed Butterflies to wake the Moonlight Merchant, a strange Gossip Stone that sells rare treasures for large sums. The bugs and treasures page covers the stock.

Batreaux

Graveyard and Batreaux’s house

Batreaux lives in a house under the Graveyard. At night you push a tombstone aside during the Find Kukiel quest to reach his door. Once you are there, you hand over Gratitude Crystals for wallets and other rewards; see the Gratitude Crystals page.

Light Tower

The Light Tower stands near the southern tip of Skyloft and is the key to the Thunderhead. After the Goddess’s Harp, use the Gust Bellows to turn the two windmills so they face the tower (one needs its missing sails first, and Scrapper carries them). A platform rises on top; play the Ballad of the Goddess there and a beam of sunlight clears a path into the Thunderhead.

Bazaar shops

The Bazaar has these stalls. All of them close at night.

Gondo

Scrap Shop

Gondo upgrades your items and equipment in exchange for Rupees and collected treasures, and he repairs damaged shields for a fee. The list of upgrades is on the item and equipment upgrades page.

At the Scrap Shop, Gondo offers to fix a shield, with Upgrade gear and Fix shield choices on screen.
Rupin

Gear Shop

Rupin sells bombs, arrows and Deku Seeds, plus shields and other gear that grows as the story advances. Shields you buy here can be improved at the Scrap Shop.

Luv

Potion Shop and Infusion Shop

Luv sells potions, and her husband Bertie upgrades them at the Infusion Shop in exchange for bugs and Rupees. Luv gives you your first Empty Bottle early on, and the bottle page lists all five.

Peatrice

Item Check

Peatrice stores items from your Adventure Pouch, and she moves overflow there automatically if the Pouch is full. You can sort the stored items, and selling items to her frees room.

Sparrot

Fortune teller

Sparrot tells you where to go next and where certain collectibles are hidden. The first fortune costs 1 Rupee and later ones cost 10. After you find him a new crystal ball in his side quest, each fortune costs 5.

Piper

Restaurant

Piper runs the restaurant. You cannot buy food, but you can sit down and talk to the people at the tables.

Link walks past round wooden tables in a restaurant dining room, with a guest seated at the back.

Skyloft at night

Night changes Skyloft. Monsters wander the island, and the Remlits turn vicious after dark. The cause is Batreaux’s curse. Night is also when Gratitude Crystals can be seen, and when Strich buys bugs and Rupin buys treasures. Besides Skyloft, only Pumpkin Landing and Beedle’s Island can be visited at night. You reach Beedle’s Island at night by sleeping in the bed inside his Airshop. After you hand Batreaux all 80 Gratitude Crystals, the monsters disappear and the Remlits stop attacking.

Sky islands

The table lists every named island. Fly to each one with your Loftwing; the Thunderhead needs the Light Tower first, and Bug Rock needs Bilocyte beaten.

Kina

Pumpkin Landing

Pumpkin Landing is the second-largest island in the sky, home of the Lumpy Pumpkin pub that Pumm and his daughter Kina run, and of a pumpkin garden. You can only reach it by Loftwing. After you break the chandelier for a Piece of Heart, Pumm gives you jobs: carry soup to Eagus, carry five pumpkins at once to the shed and play the Goddess’s Harp for the guests. These pay Rupees and a second Piece of Heart rather than crystals. Once they are done, Kina’s quest opens: find the elderly Mogma Guld in Eldin Volcano and have Scrapper carry him up to plow the field, which pays five Gratitude Crystals. Two Goddess Chests sit on the roof of the Lumpy Pumpkin. At night, a Gratitude Crystal waits in the shed east of the pub. The side quests page has every step.

Beedle

Beedle’s Island

Beedle’s Island lies northeast of Skyloft. It holds a wooden platform where the Airshop docks at night, a storage area, a campfire and a tree, plus two Goddess Chests. By day you cannot speak to Beedle on the island. To meet him, climb into his Airshop and sleep in its bed to skip to night. Near the end of the game his beetle goes missing, and returning it after winning it back from Strich pays five Gratitude Crystals and halves the price of one of his wares.

Beedle

Beedle’s Airshop

Beedle’s flying shop drifts around Skyloft by day. Ring the bell hanging beneath it with a projectile such as the Slingshot and a rope pulls you aboard. It sells a Bug Net (50 Rupees), three Extra Wallets (100 Rupees each), three Adventure Pouch upgrades (300, 600 and 1,200 Rupees), a Life Medal (800), a Bug Medal (1,000) and a Piece of Heart (1,600). Beedle gets upset if you leave without buying anything, so check your wallet first. The Piece of Heart is listed after the Life Medal in his stock, and Beedle halves the price of one item after you return his beetle. See the Heart Piece page for the 24 pieces.

Dodoh

Fun Fun Island

Fun Fun Island lies southwest of Skyloft and is entirely a minigame. When you first land, Dodoh has lost his party wheel to the surface. Once Scrapper is repaired, find the wheel in Lanayru Desert and let Scrapper carry it back. Dodoh pays five Gratitude Crystals, and gives you a free play of Dodoh’s High Dive; later plays cost 20 Rupees. A Goddess Chest holding a Gold Rupee is attached under the island. See the minigames page.

Bamboo Island

Bamboo Island

Bamboo Island is a small island with a roofless structure full of bamboo, where Peater runs the Clean Cut minigame. A Goddess Chest here opens when you strike the Goddess Cube west of the Earth Temple.

Thunderhead

The Thunderhead is a huge storm cloud in the northwest of the sky, home of the sky spirit Levias. Tornadoes circle its edge, and lightning flashes inside until Bilocyte is beaten. It holds the Isle of Songs, Bug Rock and several smaller islands, some with Goddess Chests. You reach it after the Goddess’s Harp by playing the Ballad of the Goddess on top of the Light Tower.

Goddess Crest

Isle of Songs

The Isle of Songs is two islands in the Thunderhead. The building on the main island has only a small crawlspace for an entrance, and you open it by rotating the centre pedestal until the bridge blocks line up. Inside you learn Farore’s Courage, then later Nayru’s Wisdom and Din’s Power. Two Goddess Chests sit on the isle. After you learn the songs you do not need to return, but the island stays open. See the Isle of Songs chapter and the harp songs page.

Strich

Bug Rock

Bug Rock is a small island in the Thunderhead full of every bug in the game, including a ruined, puddle-filled cellar. It opens after you beat Bilocyte, when Strich says he got lost in the fog and turned the island into a bug paradise. Strich runs Bug Heaven here: you need a Bug Net, and the Bug Beginner course costs 20 Rupees while Bug Wrangler costs 50. A Goddess Chest sits in the southwestern part of the island.

Goddess Cube

Small sky islands and Goddess Chests

Many smaller islands float around Skyloft, and each Goddess Chest sits on one of them or on Skyloft itself. A chest opens only after you strike its Goddess Cube on the surface with a Skyward Strike. There are 27 chests across the game; the Goddess Cubes page pairs each cube with its chest. Orielle’s stranded Loftwing waits on one small island too, as part of her quest.

Link stands beside a closed purple Goddess Chest on a grassy sky island under a blue beam of light.

Loftwing travel and flying tips

Every Skyloftian has a Loftwing, a guardian bird that is a sign of the goddess’s protection, and riding one is what separates adults from children there. Yours is a rare Crimson Loftwing. You call and fly it through the sky, and you leave the sky by diving.

Tilt the Wii Remote left or right to turn and up or down to climb or dive. Climbing needs flaps; a Loftwing will only fly so high before it stalls, so flick the Remote to flap and gain height and speed. A reliable way to save time is to climb first, then dive and level out to carry the speed across the sky.

Instructor Owlan can teach you the Spiral Charge, a special move that seniors learn, and your bird cannot fly at night, so plan trips for daytime.

When you want to come down, use a bird statue’s “To the sky” option to return to Skyloft and dive from the edge of Skyloft to the surface. Place your map markers on islands you plan to visit, and visit every bird statue so you can dive straight to it later. The surface regions page lists them all.

A red Loftwing dives down a glowing light column through the clouds toward the surface below.
