Beneath the clouds the world is split into three regions: the forested Faron Woods, the volcanic Eldin Volcano and the sunken Lanayru Desert. You reach each one by placing a stone tablet in the Statue of the Goddess and diving through the cloud gap it opens. Every region has two dungeons, a Silent Realm, a dragon who teaches a part of the Song of the Hero, and a set of bird statues for saving and for flying back to the sky. The regions have no roads between them, so you always move between them through the sky. Back in Skyloft, the sky page covers the home islands.

Fi and Gaepora stand at the altar as a box says the tablet opened a small rift in the cloud barrier.

Regions at a glance

Use this table to plan visits. Each region is entered in order, and you return to each one later for its Silent Realm and the dragon.

Link holds up the Emerald Tablet, and the box says the weathered stone tablet feels very old.

Faron Woods

Faron Woods is the first place you visit on the surface. A narrow glade connects the Sealed Temple to the forest, and from there the woods open into the Deep Woods, the Great Tree and Lake Floria. You walk it three times: first to find the lost Kikwi and reach Skyview Temple, then for Farore’s Silent Realm and the lake, and again when the woods are flooded for the first part of the Song of the Hero. Start with the Faron Woods chapter.

Faron areas

The Sealed Grounds are a spiral pit with air vents, topped by the Sealed Temple where an old woman waits. The Faron Woods proper hold the Kikwi, the Slingshot and the viewing platform at the entrance to the Great Tree. The Deep Woods are a more dangerous stretch you can enter once you hold the Slingshot, with Deku Hornet hives and the door of Skyview Temple. The Great Tree towers over the rest of the forest, and you enter its hollow trunk by swimming through an underwater tunnel with the Water Dragon’s Scale. Lake Floria is the largest body of water on the surface, and the Floria Waterfall beside it hides the path to the Ancient Cistern.

Trial Gate

Faron dungeons and Silent Realm

Skyview Temple is the first dungeon, in the Deep Woods, and its Beetle is the item you need there. The Ancient Cistern lies behind the Floria Waterfall and gives the Whip. Farore’s Silent Realm opens from a trial gate in the woods once you know Farore’s Courage; its reward is the Water Dragon’s Scale, which lets you swim into the Great Tree and Lake Floria. The Silent Realms page covers the trial.

Yerbal

Faron landmarks and tips

Yerbal, the hermit Kikwi, lives at the top of the Great Tree and knows how to open the gate to Lake Floria. Faron, the Water Dragon, lives in the lake and needs Sacred Water from Skyview Spring after Ghirahim’s attack. Deku Hornets nest in the Deep Woods and the Great Tree, and expect the woods to change on later visits: Blue Bokoblins and Moblins show up, and the area is flooded for the Song of the Hero. Nine Goddess Cubes lie in Faron, in the Deep Woods, around Skyview Temple and Skyview Spring, around the Great Tree, at Lake Floria and outside the Ancient Cistern entrance; see the Goddess Cubes page.

Statues are your save points and your way back to the sky, and each one you visit can be dived to later. Faron has ten.

Eldin Volcano

Eldin Volcano is the second region and the hottest. Much of it is lava, and Bokoblin strongholds have driven the Mogmas into their tunnels. You climb the volcano to the Earth Temple on your first visit, return for Din’s Silent Realm and the Fire Sanctuary, and finally come back for the Fire Dragon. The Eldin Volcano chapter walks the first climb.

Eldin areas

The main areas run from the bottom up: Volcano Entry, Volcano East, Volcano Ascent, the Thrill Digger area, Earth Spring, the Temple Entrance near the peak, and the Volcano Summit beyond. Below the volcano lies a network of caves and tunnels, called Beneath Eldin Volcano, where Mogmas live. Din’s Silent Realm and the two dungeons are separate areas in their own right.

Trial Gate

Eldin dungeons and Silent Realm

The Earth Temple is the second dungeon, near the top of the volcano, and gives the Bomb Bag. The Fire Sanctuary is inside the Volcano Summit and gives the Mogma Mitts. Din’s Silent Realm hands out the Fireshield Earrings, and without them you cannot walk the Volcano Summit’s heat.

Eldin landmarks and tips

A Mogma in a cave gives you the Digging Mitts for clearing out Bokoblins, and from then on you can dig loose soil for items and shortcuts. If you catch fire, roll or use a spin attack to put it out. At the Volcano Summit, a spring lets you fill an Empty Bottle with water, and the frog-statue tongues above the flame barriers at the Fire Sanctuary door need water poured on them. Later, Scrapper carries the Water Basin through the cavern for you. After the eruption you are jailed, escape, and find the Fire Dragon at the summit.

Eldin has six statues, all useful when you fall off a ledge.

Link walks a rocky path at the foot of Eldin Volcano, with a bird statue at the left edge.

Lanayru Desert

Lanayru was once a green land worked by robots, and it is now a desert of quicksand with a dry sea at its edge. The Timeshift Stones scattered through it turn the area around them back to the past while you stay near them. The first visit covers the Lanayru Mine, the desert and the Mining Facility; you return for Nayru’s Silent Realm, the Sand Sea with the Sandship, and Lanayru Gorge. Start with the Lanayru Desert chapter.

A blue spirit tells Link a time-shift has occurred in this space, with a purple haze around the two of them.

Lanayru areas

The Lanayru Mine is where you arrive and first activate a Timeshift Stone; mine carts carry you through it to the desert. Next come the desert itself, with Technoblins in the Desert Gorge, the Temple of Time and the Lanayru Mining Facility. South of the desert are the Lanayru Caves, reached by crossing quicksand with the Clawshots, and beyond them the Sand Sea. Lanayru Gorge, home of the dragon, is reached later through a crawlable hole in Golo’s dig inside the caves.

Trial Gate

Lanayru dungeons and Silent Realm

The Lanayru Mining Facility gives the Gust Bellows. The Sandship, found in the Sand Sea, gives the Bow. Nayru’s Silent Realm opens from a gate in the Lanayru Desert, revealed with Nayru’s Wisdom, and its reward is the Clawshots.

Skipper

Sand Sea

Sandship You sail the Sand Sea on Skipper’s boat, which carries a Timeshift Stone, so the sand turns to water around it. The Sand Sea has these stops: the Ancient Harbor, then Skipper’s Retreat, where the Ancient Sea Chart is kept in Skipper’s shack, the Lanayru Shipyard, a maze of mine-cart tracks where Gortram runs the Rickety Coaster minigame and the Pirate Stronghold, whose mouth opens to reveal the wreck of the Sandship. See the Sand Sea chapter.

Golo

Lanayru Gorge

Lanayru Lanayru Gorge is where the Thunder Dragon lived. The gorge opens once Golo finishes his mining expedition. In the present you only see his bones; carry a Timeshift Stone through the mine by minecart to the dragon and the gorge returns to its living past. There you meet Lanayru, sick, and learn that the Life Tree Seedling cannot grow in the desert, so you plant it in the Sealed Grounds of the past.

Bird Statue

Lanayru bird statues (12)

Lanayru has the most statues, because of the Sand Sea and the large desert. The one named Desert Entrance appears on the map as Lanayru Mine Entry when you are in the Temple of Time area, which makes it easy to confuse with the real Lanayru Mine Entry.

Save at a bird statue whenever you pass one, since dungeons have their own statues that only take you out of the dungeon, not back to the sky. Set map markers on the places you want to return to and visit every statue so you can dive straight to it later. Use Dowsing for the next story target or for any collectible you have the sword power to find. Check the enemies page before a second visit, since each region fills with tougher monsters as the story advances.
