Link Dolls in the game6 (each one gives one extra life)
Taken onceA doll disappears for good after you pick it up, even after a Game Over
Where they areFour on the overworld (a swamp, two stretches of coast and a swamp near New Kasuto), plus Three-Eye Rock Palace and the Great Palace
Items you needJump helps with the swamp doll near New Kasuto; the others need no special item

Link Dolls are the extra lives of Zelda II. Each one adds a life to your stock, so a Game Over sends you back to the start with more chances. There are six in the game. Two sit in the palaces, and the other four are on the overworld, where you pick them up once and they are gone for good.

The six Link Dolls

1. Moruge Swamp, north of Saria

Link Doll

From Saria Town, walk north into Moruge Swamp toward the boulder that seals the Water of Life cave, north-west of Bagu’s cabin. Walking through swamp is slow, so keep moving toward the cave entrance. The Saria chapter lists it as an optional detour.

The doll is on the swamp tile one square south-west of the boulder that blocks the cave entrance. Step onto it to collect the extra life, since it is gone after you take it.

2. Coast south of the Death Mountain bridge

Link Doll

Cross the bridge that you reach after leaving Death Mountain, then go south along the coast into the small desert. This is the stretch of coast south-west of the King’s Tomb graveyard.

Stay on the coastline. The doll is on a screen reached by walking south along the shore, and it is easy to walk past, so check each tile. The Death Mountain chapter picks it up.

3. Beach east of Darunia

Link Doll

Leave Darunia to the east, through the forest to the beach that leads to the bridge to Maze Island. The doll lies inside the southernmost stretch of that beach.

Take it on your way to rescue the child, because it disappears once taken. The Darunia chapter lists it as an optional pickup.

4. Large swamp near New Kasuto

Link Doll

Find the large swamp south of the River Devil in the south-east of Eastern Hyrule, past the graveyard near the towns of Kasuto. Swamp slows you down and wandering enemies will chase you, so move steadily.

The doll is on the north-west corner tile of the swamp. You need Jump to reach it, so if you cannot get onto the tile, try again with Jump cast. The approach runs through the cave north of Three-Eye Rock Palace and the swamp beyond. The Kasuto chapter lists it as an optional detour.

5. Three-Eye Rock Palace

Link Doll

Inside Three-Eye Rock Palace, beat the second Rebonack, then walk into the next room. A crumbling bridge crosses a gap in the middle, and the doll sits at the far right end, past a blue Iron Knuckle.

A blue Iron Knuckle and a Bubble guard the spot. Defeat the Iron Knuckle first, then take the doll. Cast Jump to cross the gap, since the bridge crumbles under you. Collect it before you place the crystal, because the palace turns to rubble afterwards and cannot be entered again. The Three-Eye Rock chapter covers the room.

6. Great Palace

Link Doll

Ride the gold-rail elevators down in the Great Palace. One floor below the second-to-last elevator, take the left path past the Bots across the lava room to a dead end, where the doll waits. One wrong step in the lava means a lost life. The Great Palace chapter covers the room.

This is the last Link Doll on the usual route through the game, and it is also the last one you can reach before the final fight.

Tips for collecting them

Dolls are one-time pickups. Take them when you pass by, because a Game Over will not bring them back. The palace dolls can only be taken while you are inside their palace. For the rest of the extra-life sources, see Experience and Levels, since beating all three level caps also gives you an extra life.
