Twilight Princess HD is a large Zelda adventure in which you play Link, who can also become a wolf. This guide takes you through the whole game in order while pointing out everything worth collecting, so that one trip through the game can end at 100%.

The game in short

You begin in Ordon Village, then cross Hyrule while clearing eight main dungeons, fighting a boss in each and gathering a new item that opens the next area. The Twilight Realm adds a second layer to the map: some regions are covered in twilight, where you are a wolf until you restore the light. The full plot is in the story summary.

The remaster keeps the GameCube control scheme adapted to the Wii U buttons, so the Wii’s pointer aiming is gone. You can aim with the GamePad’s gyro sensor, and the touchscreen shows your map and inventory, which lets you swap items without opening a menu. Check the in-game options for the exact button layout of your controller.

Normal Mode and Hero Mode

Hero Mode is available at the start. It doubles enemy damage and removes heart drops, and it mirrors the map as in the Wii version. For a first 100% file, Normal Mode is the safer choice, and directions in this guide assume it. If you play Hero Mode, flip left and right. More detail is in versions and differences.

Wolf Link

In twilight areas Link is a wolf, with Midna riding on his back. As a wolf you can dig, sense scents, and follow trails. Once you hold the Master Sword you also get the Shadow Crystal and can change form at will, and the Howling Stones teach you the Hidden Skills.

How this guide is organised

The walkthrough is split into chapters, one for each region or dungeon, starting with Ordon Village. Each chapter lists the story steps and every collectible that you can reach at that point. The 100% checklist gives the totals, and the topic pages cover the big collections.

What you need for 100%

You need to clear all the main dungeons and bosses, then collect the Heart Pieces, Poe Souls and Golden Bugs, learn the Hidden Skills and finish the optional caves. Some tasks can only be done after you get certain items, such as the Clawshot, so the chapters tell you what to leave for later.

Beginner tips

Talk to everyone and read the signs, as many collectibles are hinted at. Lock on with ZL in every fight, and keep a bottle of fairy or soup for emergencies. Buy a bottle at the earliest chance, and take wallet upgrades seriously because overflow Rupees are lost in HD.

Save often with Owl Statues, and check your map before you leave an area, since the touchscreen shows which regions still have unfinished business. The Ghost Lantern, which Jovani gives you for 20 Poe Souls, lights up when a Poe is close and helps with the rest of the 60.
