Each Step Like Thunder is a two-part battle. First you pilot Vah Naboris as Urbosa and Riju and wipe out Guardians until you reach about 30,000 knockouts before time runs out. Then the fight moves to Fort Hateno, where Zelda has to hold the fort, retake four outposts for Purah’s devices, escort Purah and finally destroy a Malice Guardian. Winning it recruits Master Kohga and opens the road to the Great Plateau.

Table of Contents
Before you start
The recommended level is 47, so train Zelda, Link and Impa before you go, since all three play the Fort Hateno half. Bring a cooking meal for attack power or the special gauge, plus spare healing food, because the fort half lasts about three times as long as the desert stage. Weapons that charge a Weak-Point Smash quickly are the best tool against the Guardians, and Remote Bomb and Stasis on the Sheikah Slate are useful against the Lynels and Ganons.

Vah Naboris battle
Defeat 30,000 enemies
You start on Vah Naboris with Urbosa and Riju surrounded by Guardian packs. Press Y for Rush and ZR for Lightning Onslaught, the beast’s lightning strike that clears Skywatchers and big groups. Walking around recharges Naboris between attacks, so keep moving instead of standing still.

An early counter asks you to defeat every Guardian in the opening groups, and later the goal becomes defeating many enemies before time runs out. The kill count passes 1,000 within the first minute and 6,000 about a minute later. When the game announces that half of the time limit remains you should be near 17,500, so use that as your pace check.

Partway through, a message warns that a huge Guardian force has appeared. Head straight for the biggest crowd and keep using Lightning Onslaught on it. In the final minute the game warns that little time remains, so spend every attack on whichever crowd is nearest; the stage ends at roughly 30,000 knockouts and takes about six minutes.

Fort Hateno defence
Protect Fort Hateno
You now lead Zelda, with Link and Impa available from the Allies menu. You lose if Fort Hateno falls or if Zelda or Purah is defeated, so keep the allied outposts in sight. Beat the Silver Moblin that attacks first, then follow the Hylian Captain’s request to help the outpost in the middle of the plain.

Next you face the Fire Lynel, then a Guardian that threatens the gate. Dodge the Lynel’s strikes, wait for its Weak-Point gauge to open and finish with a Weak-Point Smash. Reach Fort Hateno and defeat the Guardian before it breaks through.

Fireblight and Waterblight Ganon
After a cutscene with Astor, Zelda’s light power awakens and Fireblight Ganon and Waterblight Ganon appear. Defeat both: once Fireblight Ganon falls, the objective reads 1/2 and Waterblight Ganon is the one left. Dodge their big attacks, use Zelda’s light attacks to open the guard and spend a Special Attack with A when they are staggered.

Capture the four outposts
Purah then asks you to retake the outposts around the fort and secure her devices. Split your party through the Allies menu and capture all four; a Fire Guardian holds the first one. Strike the weak point on each Guardian and rely on Absorb Symbols when the prompt appears.

Later outposts are held by Guardians and Stalmoblins, with a Silver Moblin, an Electric Moblin, a White-Maned Lynel, Ice Guardians and Electric Guardians in the mix. A White-Maned Lynel adds lightning to the usual Lynel attacks, so dodge early. Leave allies to defend while you capture the last outposts, and expect a warning about Guardians arriving from the Dueling Peaks.

Escort Purah
The devices do not shut the Guardians down, so Purah heads for her lab to relocate them. Escort her to the Targeted Position on the map. On the way, an Electric Wizzrobe appears, then an Ice Guardian that Purah suspects is jamming her devices; defeat both before you go on.

Thunderblight Ganon blocks the way. Take it out before Purah moves on, using Absorb Symbols when prompted. Windblight Ganon then arrives near the control unit; defeat it so Purah can reach the target. The SUCCESS banner appears and the Guardians stop advancing for a while.

The effect is temporary and the Guardians still attack if you get close, so stay away from them. Purah withdraws, and the final enemy appears.

Malice Guardian boss fight
A Malice Guardian appears and heads for Fort Hateno. The objective is simply to defeat it before it enters the fort. Use Link with the Master Sword or Zelda’s Bow of Light, strike its weak points when the gauge opens and dodge between attacks.

When it falls, the battle ends. The Fort Hateno half takes roughly 18 minutes if you keep moving.

Korok Seeds
Korok Seed 1: path past the burning tree
Early in the Fort Hateno fight, follow the path past the burning fallen tree and the stone ruins. A Korok pops out of the glowing ground beside the path.

Korok Seed 2: tree stump at the western outpost
Go to the outpost in the far west and find the tree stump beside the rock wall. Interact with it to reveal the Korok.

Korok Seed 3: sprout beside a chest in the northeast
In the northeast, follow the path to a leafy sprout beside a treasure chest in the grass. Check the sprout to reveal the Korok Seed.

Korok Seed 4: flower in the east-southeast
Capture the outpost in the east-southeast, then step on the yellow flower in the grass below the rock cliff. It reveals the last Korok Seed.
