The Old Man is the first person you meet in Breath of the Wild. He lives among the ruins of the Great Plateau, teaches you how to cook and survive, and sends you to the four shrines there. Finish all four and he gives you the Paraglider, your only way off the plateau. He is the spirit of the last king of Hyrule.

Where to find him
You meet him soon after you leave the cave where you wake. Speak to him as you explore, since he moves on as the story advances. Once you have left the plateau he is no longer there. After the four shrines are complete he calls to you from the top of the Temple of Time, the ruined temple in the middle of the plateau.

What he does for you
- He explains fire, hunting and cooking, and points out food and gear lying near him that you may take.
- He directs you to the four shrines, which can be done in any order: Oman Au (Magnesis, x -672, z 1514, E-6), Ja Baij (Bomb, x -448, z 1990, E-6), Keh Namut (Cryonis, x -1435, z 1991, D-6) and Owa Daim (Stasis, x -925, z 2320, E-7).
- Once the four shrines are done he asks you to meet him at the Temple of Time, where he hands over the Paraglider. You do not lose your Spirit Orbs; the Goddess Statue there still accepts them.
His identity
At the Temple of Time the Old Man reveals that he is the spirit of King Rhoam, who died when Calamity Ganon rose a century ago. He tells you what happened at Hyrule Castle, asks you to destroy Ganon and sends you to Impa in Kakariko Village. King Rhoam’s Journal can later be read inside Hyrule Castle.

The Goddess Statue inside the Temple of Time also exchanges four Spirit Orbs for a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel, so you may spend the orbs there as well.
