The Fire Realm is the volcanic quarter of the map, and this chapter takes you as far as the door of the Fire Temple. A lava flow has cut Goron Village off from its own elder, so you borrow a freight car from Kagoron, fetch Mega Ice from the Snow Realm to freeze the lava, then walk the elder’s secret cave to the Fire Sanctuary and play a duet with the Lokomo Embrose.

Train route to Goron Village

Leave the Snow Realm for the Fire Realm

Open the map, choose Goron Village and draw a path east from the Snow Realm. The journey is one long run with a few switches rather than a puzzle.

Watch for enemy trains on the Snow Realm stretch and use the Cannon on them as usual, then keep going until you reach the village station.

Mountain rabbits along the line

You can catch rabbits now, and the Fire Realm holds the ten Mountain rabbits. Slow down when you see ears behind a boulder, blow the whistle, blast the boulder or barrel with the Cannon to flush the rabbit out, and net it with a tap within ten seconds. Eight of the ten are free to take on the base map; the ninth and tenth only appear once a later Force Gem opens their tracks. Take any five rabbits to Rabbitland Rescue for a Heart Container if you have not done so yet; the full list is on the rabbit locations page.

Goron Village and the lava-blocked road

Talk to the Gorons

Step off the train at the village station. A recent eruption poured lava across the main street, and the Gorons are stranded on the wrong side of it. Talk to the nearby Gorons until one tells you that the elder is cut off and that Kagoron, who prays to the mountain goddess, is up the road to the west.

A sign by the first fork points to the Goron Country Store. It stocks Bombs, potions and a Shield (200 Rupees, dearer than in Castle Town), and once you have beaten the Fire Temple it also sells a bigger Quiver for 2,000 Rupees.

Take the road to the Altar of the Mountain Goddess

Leave the village by its west side and follow the stone path uphill. Boulders roll along the road and flaming rocks drop on the ground, leaving burning patches. Step out after a boulder passes and keep clear of the burning spots so you do not lose hearts. Climb the north stairs near the entrance to the road for a chest that holds a star fragment.

Keep climbing north and west past the lava lake. Whip across the lava gaps where the path breaks. The road also passes the Goron Village stamp station, which you can use once you have the Whip; stamp your book there. Several more chests on the path give random treasure.

Meet Kagoron and borrow the Freight Car

At the top of the road Kagoron, the mountain goddess’s messenger, prays at the altar. He explains that the way to the Fire Sanctuary is known only to the village elder, so head back down.

Walk back down the road to the village. Kagoron lends you a Trusty Freight Car, a goods wagon that attaches to your Spirit Train, and explains that you must bring back something cold enough to cool the lava. Zelda remembers the answer: Mega Ice, sold in the Snow Realm.

How to get Mega Ice for the lava

Find Noko in Anouki Village

Ride back west to Anouki Village in the Snow Realm. Enemy trains can attack the line on the way, so keep the Cannon ready. In the village, talk to the honcho first. The Mega Ice supplier is not him but Noko, an Anouki who runs the ice business from the far west of the village.

Noko cannot make ice any more because his water is spoiled. He asks you for a lift to a cold, clear spring, and the one that fits is at Wellspring Station. Take him as a passenger. This is a required Force Gem quest, and it is the only gem in this chapter.

Force Gem

Drive Noko to Wellspring Station for a Force Gem

Draw a route to Wellspring Station, keep to the snow tracks and avoid enemy trains or collisions, because passengers dislike a rough ride. At the lake dock Noko thanks you and gives you a Force Gem that restores more tracks on the rail map. This gem belongs to the Noko passenger quest and is one of the twenty-one on the Force Gems page.

Buy the Mega Ice

Once the water is clear, Noko is happy to sell you a load of Mega Ice and will attach it to your Freight Car. The first batch opens at 100 Rupees. Keep refusing the price and he drops it step by step, down to 25 Rupees or even nothing, and on later visits he starts at 50.

Pay attention to his warnings. A full load is twenty blocks, it melts a little with every minute of travel, and crashing into anything or taking monster hits spills even more of it. The village needs at least ten blocks when you arrive, so drive the shortest route home at a steady speed and slow down in front of sharp bends.

Deliver the Mega Ice to Goron Village

Choose Goron Village on the map and draw the fastest path back, retracing the Snow tracks. The Fire tracks twist through the mountains, so brake before the sharp turns, and be ready for a Bomb Train that appears on the rails just before the village. Steer onto a side loop if you need to dodge it, but do not let it hit your freight car.

When you reach the village, tell Kagoron that you have the ice. The Gorons carry it to the lava and quench it, clearing the street. The elder, who lives in the northernmost and largest house, now meets you and lets you in on a secret: his house hides a cave that leads to the Fire Sanctuary.

The Elder’s cave to the Fire Sanctuary

Cross the lava bridges

Walk through the elder’s back door into the cave. Fire Keese flit around here, and a sword hit will set you alight, so use the Boomerang or the Whip against them. Go north, then west, and whip across the lava to reach the next ledge. A floor switch there lowers two bridges; take the second one to cross the southern lake of lava.

Continue east into a room full of pots. A Like Like hides among them and can swallow your shield if you break the wrong pot, so use a bomb on the creature or put on the Shield of Antiquity from the stamp book to be safe. Go up the stairs, then west to a chest, then return east and climb north to leave through the cave exit near the sanctuary. Chests in the cave give random treasures.

Fire Sanctuary puzzles and Song of Light statues

Light the torch bridges

Go north from the cave exit and avoid the boulders that drop along the way. Fire Babas guard the path and spit flame; kill them before they get close. Four torches stand in a vertical row here, and when you have lit them all, a bridge slides across the gap to the north.

Back to the south, a ring-shaped area of Fire Babas holds the last two torches. Clear the Babas and light both torches to lower two more bridges. Use the Boomerang to carry flames where you cannot walk, and remember that it is also the item you need for the Fire Sanctuary stamp station, so stamp your book there as you pass.

Take the stairs north. The long western bridges lead to a chest and the stamp station, while the shorter eastern bridge goes to the door puzzle. Choose the eastern one when you are ready to continue.

Solve the three-statue puzzle with the Song of Light

You arrive in a hall of eight carved stone faces with a tablet about three people bound by love. Read it as a clue about who is looking at whom. The man in the centre is the popular one, because most statues face him. The woman at the top middle has eyes only for the other man, the statue at the middle right.

Stand on the tile between the centre statue and the middle-right statue, open the Spirit Flute with the Song of Light, and play it. A crystal appears in front of you and a beam of light flows toward the door. The wall blocking the sanctuary drops, so walk on through.

Embrose duet and the Fire Temple tracks

Embrose

Meet Embrose, the Lokomo of the Fire Realm

Embrose is the Lokomo of the Fire Realm, a younger Lokomo with fire-red hair who plays the drums. He asks you to help restore the Spirit Tracks. As with Gage, Steem and Carben, you must play a duet.

The practice round teaches you the pattern. Tap the coloured pads in the order purple, yellow, purple, yellow and blue, matching the beats he shows you. When you feel confident, put down your flute, choose to try for real and repeat the pattern.

When the duet ends, the Fire rail map glows and new tracks appear, including the line to the Fire Temple. Before you go up the mountain, talk to the villagers again.

Back to the village for clues

Return through the cave and visit the elder again. He explains that the gate of the Fire Temple has three locks and that monsters hold the keys; without all three, the gate stays closed. Gorons in the village add hints: the monsters dislike loud noises, so blow the train whistle once short and once long to stun them.

Before you leave, note that Tengoron sells Goron Iron at 100 Rupees for a load of twenty; do not buy it yet, but remember it for a later cargo quest.

Optional: the Goron Target Range

West of Goron Village you can also play the Goron Target Range, a shooting game from your train cannon at 20 Rupees a go. It is a good use of spare rupees, and the best prizes are covered on the mini-games page.
