Level 2 in the Second Quest uses a different layout and a different entrance from the First Quest, and its main item is the Recorder. You enter through a stairway hidden under an Armos statue at E4, clear the rooms for keys and the Map, pick up the Recorder in a basement, and then defeat a two-headed Gleeok for a Heart Container and the second Triforce piece. On the way out, the Recorder reveals a staircase in the desert (K4) with a second Heart Container, and the shop in the far north-east sells Monster Bait.

Reaching the Level 2 entrance
Find the stairway under the Armos statue
Go to the field of Armos statues at E4, in the west of the overworld, with a lake on its right. The stairway to Level 2 is under the middle statue of the top row: touch it and it slides off the stairs. The spot is where the Blue Ring shop stood in the First Quest, so the location is easy to remember. Step onto the stairway to enter the dungeon.
Level 2: keys, the Map and the Recorder
Clear the Gibdo room for the first key
The room above the entrance holds several Gibdos. Defeat all of them to get the first key. You can continue to the next room up without fighting; to return to the room below later, you must defeat its Zols and push the block on the left.
Defeat the Keese for the next keys
Above the room of Zols, defeat the Keese to get another key. Continue through the next room, where Gibdos block the way, and enter the room above. In the room full of Keese, bomb the right wall to open a passage with a key, then return to the left side. Clear the Keese to open the door at the top of the room.
Defeat Manhandla and collect the Map
Defeat the Manhandla to get a key, then enter the room on the right. Fight the Darknuts carefully and unlock the door above them. Beyond that door, dodge the traps while you fight the Zols, and the Map is in this room.
Find the Recorder in the basement
Go back down the corridor to its bottom end and push against the wall, which lets you pass through to an unmarked room. Enter the stairwell in the middle of that room to reach a basement guarded by Keese. The Recorder is in that basement, and it is the item you need for the Level 3 pond, the Level 6 graveyard stairs and two of the hidden Heart Containers. Read more about the item on the items page.
Pick up the Compass, bombs and the last keys
Leave the basement room by pushing against the left wall, which opens a one-way invisible passage. In the room below, unlock the door on the right and defeat the enemies for a key. If you want the Compass, bomb the bottom wall of that room to open a passage, which saves a key, and then return to the room above. From there, fight the Darknuts in the room on the right for a set of four bombs, take the door below, and clear the Keese for another key. In the next room, defeat the Zols for a final key, then take the stairs down into the underground passage that leads to the upper-right side of the dungeon.
Gleeok and the second Triforce piece
Fight the two-headed Gleeok
Gleeok has two heads on one body. Stab each head with your sword until it breaks loose and starts flying around the room. A loose head keeps threatening you, and the fight is only over once every head has been destroyed.
Take the Heart Container and the Triforce piece
Defeating Gleeok leaves a Heart Container in the boss room. Walk over it to collect it. Then continue into the room above to pick up the second Triforce piece, and leave the dungeon through the south exit toward the overworld.
Desert secrets and the shop on the way out
Collect the 30 rupees from the secret cave
Heading east from Level 2, you pass a secret cave marked “It’s a secret to everybody”. A Moblin inside hands you 30 rupees. The visit is optional, but rupees matter later in this quest. Keep walking toward the desert once you leave the cave.
Use the Recorder in the northeast desert
Go to the north-east corner of the desert (K4) and play the Recorder. A staircase is revealed in the sand. Walk down the stairs to reach a cave where a man lets you choose one of his offers.
Take the Heart Container from the cave
The cave offers a Red Potion and a Heart Container, and you can take only one of them. Take the Heart Container, the fourth of the Second Quest, and leave the potion behind. The full list is on the heart container locations page.
Buy Monster Bait in the north-east shop
Buy the Monster Bait for 60 rupees
Go on to the far north-east corner of the map (P1), where three statues stand on the sand. The same hidden shop you used for the Blue Ring sits under the middle one. The shopkeeper sells a key for 80 rupees, the Blue Ring for 250 rupees and Monster Bait for 60 rupees. Buy the Monster Bait, which a hungry creature in Level 3 will accept in exchange for passage.
