Heart Pieces 1 to 12

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #1

Kakariko Village. Pick up a Cucco near the stone stairs and carry it uphill past the well and the wooden bridge. Climb the ladder against the high stone wall, take the second Cucco from the grassy ledge at the top, then jump off the end of the lane with it in your arms. Glide onto the purple rooftops and follow the ivy-covered roof to the far wall, where a red-haired man sits against a wooden hut. He hands you the piece when you reach him. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #2

Graveyard. Go to the Graveyard at night and talk to Dampé in the tombstone square. The soil you want is his fourth mound, and Dampé asks for an extra 10 rupees on top of the usual 10 for it, so it costs 20 in all. The earlier mounds only give rupees or nothing. Pay, wait while he digs, and grab the piece as it floats out of the ground before the light fades. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #3

Lon Lon Ranch. Follow the fence to the ruined stone building with the red door and go into the crate room. Press A at the Grab prompt to pull and push the crates aside until a low doorway opens at the far end, then go through the short stone passage into the round stone room. Walk up to the glowing pink heart in the middle and press A to take it. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #4

Gerudo Valley. Follow the canyon floor until the trail narrows beside a ledge with a Cucco on it. Pick the bird up, jump from the edge and steer so you glide onto the rock shelf across the gap. A chest sits against the wall there, and it holds the piece. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #5

Gerudo Valley. Leave the cow pasture by the waterfall along the cliff path above the stream and climb the stone staircase up the canyon wall. The steps end at a narrow doorway into a small wooden chamber lit by one beam of light. Walk to the middle of the room and take the piece.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #6

Lake Hylia. Follow the shore of Lake Hylia to the log hut with the “Wanna fish?” sign. Pay 10 rupees for the rod, catch a big fish with the normal lure and take it to the Fishing-Pond Man at the counter. A fish of 56 cm is enough: he calls it a BIG one and gives you the piece. The sinking lure is banned and fish caught with it do not count. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #7

Hyrule Castle Town. Play the Sun’s Song in the town square to bring on the night, because Richard only roams the streets after dark. Search the side streets and alleys off the plaza for the small white dog, pick him up and carry him to the large woman in the alley who is calling his name. She rewards you with the piece. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #8

Lost Woods. In the Lost Woods clearing with two stumps, stand on the shorter stump in front of the Skull Kid and play the Fairy Ocarina. Copy each phrase he plays back to him. The first session earns a blue rupee and the second a red rupee, and the third session, with the longest phrases, wins the piece.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #9

Lost Woods. After you learn Saria’s Song, follow the winding path back into the Lost Woods and keep to the stream until you reach a second Skull Kid on a stump. Stand on the stump in front of him and play Saria’s Song. He calls you a friend and gives you the piece.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #10

Goron City. Follow the lit tunnels through Goron City to the cave with a huge clay pot carved with a face. Stand on the stone ledge in front of it, wait for the mouth to open and throw a lit bomb in. The scowl turns into a grin and the piece appears at the foot of the pot beside two blue rupees. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #11

Death Mountain Crater. In the crater, pass the first alcove on your right and walk on to the chain-link net that hangs down the side of a ledge facing the temple. Step to the edge and use Climb Down. A hidden nook at the bottom holds the piece. Climb back up the net afterward.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #12

Kakariko Village. Talk to Kaepora Gaebora at the summit of Death Mountain again and accept his offer of a ride. He sets you down on the blue-tiled roofs of Kakariko Village. Walk across the blue shingles and drop onto the red-tiled roof beside the cow barn, where the piece floats above the tiles.

Heart Pieces 13 to 24

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #13

Hyrule Castle Town. Each play at the Bombchu Bowling Alley costs 10 rupees. The first win gives Bombchus and the second gives the Biggest Bomb Bag. Pay once more and clear the lane a third time, and the prize is the piece. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #14

Zora River. Pick up a Cucco on Zora River. A line of small mossy islets crosses the water ahead. Drop from islet to islet with the Cucco in your arms so the bird slows your fall. The chain ends at a glowing piece. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #15

Zora River. Carry a Cucco back along the cliff path and across the stone bridge. Past the bridge a stream cuts through the grass. Keep the bird in your arms along the narrow shelf until a piece glows in front of you.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #16

Zora Domain. Past the Zora shop in Zora Domain, the corridor is dark. Light a Deku Stick on a burning torch and use it to light every unlit torch along the hall. The corridor ends in a small chamber with two torch pillars and a chest that holds the piece.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #17

Graveyard. Walk to the old stone wall in the corner of the Graveyard where the red and blue flower from a Magic Bean you planted as a child grows. Step into the flower and let it launch you up and over the wall. The piece hovers on a block on the far side. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #18

Kakariko Village. Follow Dampé’s tunnel out of the Graveyard, and it opens onto the upper floor of the windmill. Cross the wooden planks to the central shaft, where the piece sits on a small ledge. Press the button when the Take prompt appears.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #19

Graveyard. Drop into Dampé’s grave again after you own the Hookshot, talk to him through the bars and accept his one-minute race. Follow his lantern past each “Over here!” through the tunnels and finish before the timer ends. He then lets you open the chest in the chamber, which holds the piece.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #20

Kakariko Village. Enter the Cursed Rich Man’s candle-lit house at dusk once every one of his sons is freed from the Gold Skulltula curse. He thanks you and hands over the piece. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #21

Lake Hylia. Climb the wooden ladder inside the tower in Lake Hylia, step out onto the outer ledge and keep climbing the outside ladder. A Let Go and Jump prompt shows while you hang. At the top, a round wooden deck circles a tall pole, and the piece lies on the deck.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #22

Lake Hylia. The Golden Scale comes from the Fishing Pond Man for a fish over 60 cm. Back in the Lakeside Laboratory, jump into the deep tank, hold the Dive button and swim all the way down to the grate at the bottom. When you surface, the scientist hands over the piece.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #23

Death Mountain Trail. Climb the chain-link net on the cliff along Death Mountain Trail. At the top, step onto the big flower beside the sign, grown from a Magic Bean you planted as a child, and let it carry you to the next ledge, then ride the next flowers up past the rope bridge. Climb the rocky steps beside the bridge until a faint green glow shows in a nook in the rock wall, and take the piece there. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #24

Death Mountain Crater. Warp to the crater with the Bolero of Fire. From the stone walkway, follow the red rock path to the flower with colored petals, grown from a Magic Bean you planted as a child, and ride it to the next ledge, then take the next flower from the outcrop. A small stone island ringed by glowing lava lies ahead with the piece at its center.

Heart Pieces 25 to 36

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #25

Zora Fountain. Walk out of Zora Domain onto the Zora Fountain, which is a field of ice blocks and floes. Hop from block to block, climbing the taller slabs with a jump and a grab, and follow the line of ice away from the shore. A ledge on the far side holds the piece. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #26

Zora Fountain. Wear the Zora Tunic from King Zora, run across the ice ridges to the open water near the stone pillar and hold the dive button. Swim down into the dark cave under the ice, where green rupees lie on the floor, and take the piece at the end.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #27

Zora River. Climb the stone steps by the stream to the pool below the waterfall, dive across and talk to the five frogs on the stumps past it. Play the Song of Storms, and they drop the piece. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #28

Zora River. Talk to the frogs again and play the Song of Time when they ask for another song. Say yes when they ask whether you want to play with them. After Ready appears, play the notes with the Ocarina while the frogs catch insects. When Cleared! shows, they give you the piece.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #29

Hyrule Castle Town. Play the Sun’s Song to turn the day to night and find the Treasure Box Shop in the back streets. Each try costs 10 rupees. In each of five rooms, use the Lenses of Truth to see which of the two chests holds the key. Open it, take the key and unlock the door. After the last door, walk up the red carpet to the prize room and open the single chest. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #30

Gerudo Fortress. Climb the brick walls to the high terrace overlooking the walled yard. Play the Scarecrow Song to call a scarecrow onto the far ledge, aim the Longshot at it and fire to be pulled across. Walk to the torch beside the chest and open it for the piece. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #31

Gerudo Fortress. Ride to the red awning and talk to the Horseback-Archery Attendant. A round costs 30 rupees and gives you 20 arrows. Gallop along the fence and shoot the targets with the Fairy Bow. A score of 750 points earns the piece.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #32

Evil Desert Colossus. Warp to the Colossus with the Requiem of Spirit and step onto the leaf of the grown bean plant. Switch to the Fairy Bow and keep riding. The leaf carries you under a huge stone arch and over a red rock ridge to a ledge, where the piece waits.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #33

Graveyard. Go to the Graveyard after dark, carry a bomb to the doorway filled with cracked rock and blow it open. Follow the tunnel through the pillared chamber to the yellow flower platform that lifts you out. Then pull the slab from the tomb that shows a Grab prompt and drop down again. A chest at the end of the second hall holds the piece. The full route is in its walkthrough chapter.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #34

Hyrule Field. Leave Hyrule Castle Town and follow the grass bank beside the moat to a round hole near the tower wall. Drop in and step onto the yellow flower platform to reach the grotto. Give the Business Scrub the password, choose “I’ll buy!” and pay 100 rupees for the piece.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #35

Hyrule Field. Cross Hyrule Field on foot from the scrub’s grotto, following the river past the wooden bridge and across grass that turns to sand. Enter the red-rock canyon and keep to the wall. As a child, you reach the chest under the canyon wall that Navi pointed out earlier, and it opens normally.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #36

Death Mountain Crater. As child Link, enter the crater from Death Mountain Trail with a Deku Shield and at least 100 rupees, and go to the southern part of the crater, near the cliffs where you climb down the net. A Business Scrub lives there. Wait for it to fire, reflect the shot back with the Deku Shield, then talk to it and buy the Heart Piece for 100 rupees.

Boss Heart Containers

Each of the eight dungeon bosses leaves a Heart Container that adds one heart at once and refills your health. They do not count toward the 36 pieces, and there is no way to miss one: stepping into the light after the fight collects it.

Heart Container

Heart Container (Gohma)

Great Deku Tree. Defeat Gohma by shooting her out of the ceiling. A Heart Container rises from the floor in a beam of light, and taking it restores all your hearts. See the Great Deku Tree chapter for the route to the boss room.

Heart Container

Heart Container (King Dodongo)

Dodongo Cavern. When King Dodongo falls, a Heart Container rises out of the haze in the arena. Take it before you step into the blue light. See the Dodongo Cavern chapter for the route to the boss room.

Heart Container

Heart Container (Barinade)

Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. Walk into the light beam where Barinade fell and take the Heart Container. See the Jabu-Jabu’s Belly chapter for the route to the boss room.

Heart Container

Heart Container (Phantom Ganon)

Forest Temple. After the fight with Phantom Ganon, the Heart Container waits in his chamber. See the Forest Temple chapter for the route to the boss room.

Heart Container

Heart Container (Volvagia)

Fire Temple. Beat Volvagia and the Heart Container appears with the Fire Medallion. See the Fire Temple chapter for the route to the boss room.

Heart Container

Heart Container (Morpha)

Water Temple. After Morpha falls, a Heart Container drops from a beam of light in the middle of the arena. See the Water Temple chapter for the route to the boss room.

Heart Container

Heart Container (Bongo Bongo)

Shadow Temple. When Bongo Bongo collapses, a red Heart Container floats in a column of light in the middle of the arena. See the Shadow Temple chapter for the route to the boss room.

Heart Container

Heart Container (Twinrova)

Spirit Temple. A Heart Container sits on the floor where Twinrova fell. Pick it up to add a heart and refill your health. See the Spirit Temple chapter for the route to the boss room.

How the hearts add up

You start with 3 hearts. The 8 boss Heart Containers add 8 more, and the 36 Heart Pieces, in nine sets of four, add 9 more, for a total of 20. Each completed set shows the message that you collected four Pieces of Heart and earned an additional heart, and all your hearts are restored.

Fairy’s Thoughts hint at some of the pieces. The thought that tells you to take what is in a treasure chest because the lock was left undone leads to the canyon chest, piece 35. The other thoughts are listed on the Fairy’s Thoughts page.
