Goron City has gone quiet and the Gorons are missing, and this chapter is the first step toward the Fire Temple. You climb Death Mountain Trail for a Heart Piece, cut through Dodongo Cavern for a Gold Skulltula, find the small Goron who gives you the Goron Tunic, and learn the Bolero of Fire from Sheik in Death Mountain Crater. Two return trips to the Temple of Time add one more token and one more Heart Piece.

Link walking up the red dirt Death Mountain Trail past a rock wall

Death Mountain Trail Heart Piece

Climb the cliff path

Head back up Death Mountain Trail from the lake and follow the red rock path uphill. Where a chain-link net hangs on the cliff, climb it with the stick. The prompts let you let go or jump off. At the top, a wooden sign stands beside a path that is too steep to walk, and a large flower is growing next to it.

Ride the flowers up the cliff

Step onto the big flower with the colored petals and let it carry you up to the next ledge. Another flower waits above it, and a third beside a rope bridge higher still. Keep stepping from one to the next, then climb the rocky steps beside the bridge until you spot a faint glow tucked into a nook in the rock wall.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #23

Climb into the nook and pick up the glow. This is Heart Piece #23, the third piece toward your next heart container. The rest of the path winds along the cliff into a narrow cave, which leads straight into Dodongo Cavern.

Dodongo Cavern back route and Gold Skulltula

Cross the lava hall

The Dodongo Cavern title appears as you step into a hall of lava on the ground floor (1F). Pass the round stone platform and the wooden bridge, then follow the tunnels onward and cut down the small enemies that block them. You are only passing through here. The full dungeon belongs to the Dodongo Cavern chapter.

Play the Scarecrow Song

In a dark tunnel lit by a glowing red lantern, take out the Ocarina and play your Scarecrow Song. A scarecrow appears on a high ledge and calls “Come on!”. You learn the song in the side quest Stir the Scarecrow’s Soul!, covered on the side quests page.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #52

Equip the Hookshot, aim it at the scarecrow when the Fire prompt shows and let it pull you up into the small cave above. A Gold Skulltula clings to the rock wall at the back. Defeat it and the token drops: “You’ve collected 52 tokens so far.” This is Gold Skulltula #52.

Leave the cavern

Return to the tunnels and continue past the lava room with the wooden cage on a platform and the Goron statue along the wall. The passage ends at an exit onto Death Mountain Trail, where the Death Mountain Trail title shows and the sky has turned to night.

Goron City

Follow the trail to the cave

Walk the cliff path in the dark and use the flowers again to climb the ledges. A cave mouth appears with a spider crawling in front. Slip past it and follow the tunnel through the dark rooms until it opens into a brightly lit passage leading into Goron City.

Find the empty city

Cross the net bridge into the city. It is dark and empty. A Goron child hiding on a ledge asks “Are you one of THEM?! One of Ganondorf’s people?!”, then runs off, saying he will not wait for you. The Goron City title appears and the quest Disaster in Goron City starts.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #53

Once the Goron City title has shown, a plank bridge crosses a cave in the city’s tunnels. From the bridge, a Gold Skulltula glows on the cave wall. Draw the Fairy Bow, aim at it and shoot when the Shoot Arrow prompt shows. The box reads “You’ve collected 53 tokens so far.”

Search the tunnels

Follow the tunnels and rope bridges around the city. Rubble blocks one passage, so blast it with Bombs. Keep going until you reach the dark corner where the small Goron is waiting.

Talk to the small Goron

The little Goron boasts that he is the Goron hero, then asks if you are the Dodongo buster. He explains that he was named after you and that his father went to the Fire Temple and never came back. A dragon there is expected to eat everyone in Goron City. Promise to help and he stops crying and recovers.

Goron Tunic

Goron Tunic

He gives you his Goron Tunic: “You got a Goron Tunic!” The heat-resistant tunic is adult sized, so only the grown Link can wear it. Open the Equipment screen and equip it, and your clothes turn red. You can now stand in scorching places without getting hurt.

Take the secret shortcut

The Goron adds that there is a shortcut to the Fire Temple behind the forebrother statue. Walk through the carved doorway past the shop at the end of the city and into the chamber with the large stone statue and two lit torches. Face the statue and press the Grab prompt, then follow the passage that opens behind it. It leads out into Death Mountain Crater.

Death Mountain Crater

Cross to the lava bridge

The Death Mountain Crater title appears as you step out. Follow the stone path along the lava with the Hookshot ready. A figure in red waits ahead on a bridge of stone slabs over the lava, near a round pedestal set into the floor.

Sheik

Sheik and the Bolero of Fire

Sheik greets you and says you must have found Goron City in an eerily quiet state. Link and the Gorons share a bond that has not changed, and she wants to celebrate it with a new song. She plays the opening notes of the Bolero of Fire on her harp, and the song sheet shows what you need to repeat.

Bolero of Fire

Take out the Ocarina and copy the notes. When you play them back, you see “You learned the Bolero of Fire!” The song warps you to Death Mountain Crater from anywhere you can play the Ocarina. Sheik tells you the time to talk will come later and disappears, leaving you on the stone walkway.

Two trips to the Temple of Time

Warp back with the Prelude of Light

Stand on the pedestal in the Crater and play the Prelude of Light. You warp to the Temple of Time, where you can switch ages. This detour has two stops: a token in the Crater that you collect as a child, and then a Heart Piece in the Crater that you reach as an adult with the Bolero of Fire.

Master Sword

Return the Master Sword

Walk to the pedestal and put the Master Sword back to become a child again. The Equipment screen now shows the Goron Tunic as “Adult Only”. Play the Bolero of Fire on the stairs and choose Warp when the game asks “Warp to the Death Mountain Crater?”

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #54

As a child, open the Items screen and choose the Bug in your bottle. Walk along the lava rim to the patch of soft soil and use the bottle on it. The bug burrows in and a Gold Skulltula token pops out: “You’ve collected 54 tokens so far.” This is Gold Skulltula #54, and the soil now holds a sprout.

Return as an adult

Play the Prelude of Light again to warp to the Temple of Time. Walk down the red carpet to the pedestal and pull the Master Sword to grow up. Then play the Bolero of Fire on the platform, choose Warp, and arrive back in Death Mountain Crater.

Crater Heart Piece

Use the flowers over the lava

You land on the stone walkway beside the lava, where the red rock path winds up to a flower with colored petals. Step onto it and ride it to the next ledge. Another flower sits on the next outcrop, and from there you can see a small stone island ringed by glowing lava, with a green glow in its center.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #24

Land on the island and pick up the glow. The box reads “You’ve collected four Pieces of Heart and earned an additional heart! All your hearts will now be restored!” This is Heart Piece #24, and it completes a heart container.

Head for the Fire Temple

Open the Items screen and equip the Fairy Bow. Ride the flowers back across the lava to the walkway that leads to the stone doorway. The Fire Temple title card appears when you step into the entrance hall.
