What Are Gold Skulltulas and Why Hunt Them?

Gold Skulltula from Ocarina of Time

Gold Skulltulas, also called Spiders of the Curse, are gold-colored Skulltulas hidden all over Hyrule. Most of them cling to walls, trees and ceilings and stay put instead of chasing Link. Defeat one and it leaves behind a Gold Skulltula Token; touch the token, or grab it with the Boomerang, Hookshot or Longshot, to add it to your total. Listen for their scraping sound when you think one is close.

The reason to collect them is the House of Skulltula, a gray house in the southeast part of Kakariko Village. A rich family lived there until their greed brought a curse on them and turned them into Skulltulas. Every token Link collects weakens the curse, and each time he reaches a milestone another family member turns human again and hands over a reward.

The House of Skulltula: Rewards for Your Bravery

Visit the house as young or adult Link and talk to the family members who have been freed. You do not hand tokens over one at a time: the count goes up as you collect them, and every reward you have earned is waiting when you step inside.

Reward for 10 Gold Skulltula Tokens: Adult's Wallet

10 Tokens: Adult’s Wallet

Raises the Rupee limit from 99 to 200, so you can save up for the more expensive shop items and mini-game fees.

Reward for 20 Gold Skulltula Tokens: Shard of Agony

20 Tokens: Stone of Agony (N64) / Shard of Agony (3DS)

Points you toward hidden grottoes.

  • N64: the Rumble Pak (if one is plugged in) vibrates when Link is close to a hidden grotto.
  • 3DS: the Shard of Agony takes its place, since the 3DS has no rumble. An icon flashes in the top-left corner of the screen and a ping sounds when you are near a hidden grotto.
Reward for 30 Gold Skulltula Tokens: Giant's Wallet

30 Tokens: Giant’s Wallet

The biggest wallet in the game, raising the Rupee limit to 500.

Reward for 40 Gold Skulltula Tokens: Bombchus

40 Tokens: Bombchus

Link gets 10 Bombchus, the crawling bombs that run along floors and walls before they explode. They are handy for distant switches and cracked walls you cannot reach with a normal Bomb.

Reward for 50 Gold Skulltula Tokens: Piece of Heart

50 Tokens: Piece of Heart

One of the 36 Pieces of Heart, all listed on the Heart Pieces page.

Reward for 100 Gold Skulltula Tokens: Huge Rupee

100 Tokens: Huge Rupee (Repeatable)

Once you have all 100 tokens, the whole family is human again and the father gives Link a Huge Rupee worth 200 Rupees. Leave the house and talk to him again and he gives you another one, as often as you like.

How Do I Know Which Gold Skulltula Tokens I Haven’t Found Yet?

Ocarina of Time does not show a count such as 3 out of 5 for each area, but the pause menu does mark every dungeon and overworld area where you have found all the Gold Skulltulas. Here is how to check.

1. Checking Dungeons

  • Enter the dungeon: you must be inside the dungeon you want to check.
  • Pause the game: press START to open the pause menu.
  • Open the dungeon map: select the Map screen. It shows the map of the dungeon you are in.
  • Find the Skulltula icon: a Gold Skulltula icon appears on the dungeon map screen.
  • Check how the icon looks: if it is bright gold, you have found every Gold Skulltula in that dungeon. If it is grey or dim, at least one is still missing there.

2. Checking Overworld Areas

  • Pause the game: press START while you are in the overworld, not inside a dungeon or a house.
  • Open the world map: select the Map screen to see the map of Hyrule.
  • Move over the locations: use the control stick to move the cursor over the areas you have visited, such as Kakariko Village, Death Mountain Trail or Zora’s River.
  • Look for the Skulltula mark: if you have found every Gold Skulltula in that area, a small Gold Skulltula icon appears next to the area’s name.
  • No icon means some are missing: without the icon, at least one Skulltula in that area is still out there. The mark does not count dungeons you enter from that area, so check their dungeon maps separately.

Between the bright icon on each dungeon map and the small icon beside the area names on the world map, you can see exactly which places still hide tokens.

Every Gold Skulltula Location

All 100 Gold Skulltulas are listed below in order, the 44 dungeon Skulltulas first and then the 56 in the overworld. None of the dungeon Skulltulas depend on the time of day, but 40 of the overworld ones only come out at night, so play the Sun’s Song to skip ahead when you need to. Nine more hide in soft soil patches and pop out when you release bugs from a bottle onto the soil.

Inside the Deku Tree (4 Skulltulas) [#1-4]

Route through this area: Inside the Deku Tree walkthrough.

Young Link using the slingshot against a Gold Skulltula inside an alcove on the wall of the Compass room in Inside the Deku Tree.

#1 – Compass Point Crawler

Required: Young Link and Slingshot Slingshot

Location: Climb to the top floor of the Deku Tree and enter the Compass room, where a switch raises platforms for a short time. Use them to jump over to the alcove in the west side wall: the Gold Skulltula is on the wall of that alcove.

Shoot it with the Slingshot from the platform and touch the token when it drops. If the platforms sink first, step on the switch again.

A Gold Skulltula crawling high up on the climbable vines on the wall in the basement room B1 of Inside the Deku Tree.

#2 – Vine-clinging Token

Required: Young Link and Slingshot Slingshot

Location: Fall through the web in the middle of the main room’s floor to land in the flooded basement. The token is on the climbable vine wall that leads back up to the first floor, crawling about on the vines.

Shoot it from the ground with the Slingshot (or throw the Boomerang once you have it), then climb the vines to pick up the token on the way. You can do this on your first visit, right after breaking the web.

A Gold Skulltula sitting on top of the metal floor grate near the switch in the basement of Inside the Deku Tree.

#3 – Grate Expectations

Required: Young Link and Slingshot Slingshot

Location: In the same flooded basement room as #2, a Gold Skulltula clings to the metal grate near the switch.

Shoot it with the Slingshot, or slash it if it comes close, then jump off the adjacent ledge to claim the token. It is easy to do right after #2.

Young Link standing in front of a blown-open bombable wall revealing a hidden Gold Skulltula behind a spiderweb inside the Deku Tree.

#4 – Behind the Bombable Barrier

Required: Young Link and Bombs Bombs, Boomerang Boomerang and a way to light a fire (a Deku Stick Deku Stick)

Location: From the main room, drop through the hole in the center and crawl through the small passage into the lower rooms. Past the spiked log and torch rooms you reach the room where Gohma Larva eggs drop. It has two cobwebs: the far one is the way on, but the other hides a blocked-off wall on the north side. Burn that web, then blow the wall open with a Bomb.

Behind the wall is a small room with a Gold Skulltula. You cannot do this on your first trip, because the Bombs come from Dodongo’s Cavern and the Boomerang from Jabu-Jabu’s Belly, so return afterwards. The Boomerang kills the spider and brings the token back in one throw.

Dodongo’s Cavern (5 Skulltulas) [#5-9]

Route through this area: Dodongo’s Cavern walkthrough.

Young Link standing in front of a blown-open hidden room passage containing a Gold Skulltula in Dodongo's Cavern.

#5 – Baby Boom Blast

Required: Young Link and Bombs Bombs (or a Baby Dodongo explosion) and a Slingshot Slingshot or Boomerang Boomerang

Location: In the short passage full of Baby Dodongos just before the large cavern room, a fake section of wall on the right (south) side opens into a small room with three Keese and a Gold Skulltula on the wall.

Lure a Baby Dodongo next to the wall and let it explode, or simply place a Bomb. Kill the Keese, then take out the spider with the Slingshot or Boomerang; if the token stays out of reach, a jump attack or a backflip collects it.

A Gold Skulltula crawling on the wall vines near the second-floor exit of the giant staircase room in Dodongo's Cavern.

#6 – Stairway Vine Varmint

Required: Young Link and Slingshot Slingshot or Boomerang Boomerang

Location: In the large room with the giant staircase, set off the Bomb Flowers to raise the stairs and climb up to the second-floor doorway on the east side. The Gold Skulltula is on the climbable vines beside it.

Shoot it with the Slingshot, then climb the vines to collect the token.

#7 – The Raised Stair Surprise

Required: Young or adult Link and Boomerang Boomerang (as child) or Longshot Longshot (as adult)

Location: In the same staircase room as #6, raise the stairs by setting off the Bomb Flowers from the upper level, then loop back round to the upper level of the room. Look for an alcove high above where the base of the stairs used to be: a Gold Skulltula sits inside it.

As a child you need the Boomerang, so come back after Jabu-Jabu’s Belly and throw it at the alcove. As an adult, aim the Longshot into the alcove instead.

Link fighting an Armos statue inside a bombed-open secret room to reveal a hidden Gold Skulltula in Dodongo's Cavern.

#8 – Armos’ Hidden Hoard

Required: Adult Link and Hookshot Hookshot and Scarecrow's Song Scarecrow’s Song

Location: From the main cavern room, take the eastern passage with the Blade Traps and Baby Dodongos. Look high up on the left (north) wall for an alcove you cannot normally reach; Navi turns green near it.

Stand below it and play Scarecrow’s Song to make Pierre appear, then Hookshot to him. Kill the Gold Skulltula from the ledge and collect the token.

Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly (4 Skulltulas) [#10-13]

Route through this area: Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly walkthrough.

Young Link using the Boomerang to collect a Gold Skulltula token high up on the climbable wall vines inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly.

#10 – The Water Switch Web

Required: Young Link and Slingshot Slingshot or Boomerang Boomerang

Location: In the large chamber where you shoot a ceiling switch to open a lower path, hit the switch, drop down and enter the next room. A switch in the center of the floor raises and lowers the water, and the Gold Skulltula is high on the climbable vines on the wall.

Shoot it with the Slingshot (or use the Boomerang later), then adjust the water with the switch and climb the vines to take the token. You can get it on your first visit.

A Gold Skulltula clinging to the slimy organic wall inside the lower pitfall room of Jabu-Jabu's Belly.

#11 – Pitfall Pest

Required: Young Link and Boomerang Boomerang

Location: Once the Parasitic Tentacles are dead, drop through the hole they were blocking into the pit room below. A Gold Skulltula sits on the vines on the wall here, and this is the nearer of two.

Kill it, then throw the Boomerang to fetch the token. Stay clear of the Biri jellyfish, or kill them first.

#12 – Pitfall Pest’s Partner

Required: Young Link and Boomerang Boomerang

Location: This is the second spider in the same pit room as #11, on the wall a little farther along from it.

Kill it and fetch the token with the Boomerang. If the throw falls short, move closer along the platform and throw again.

Young Link aiming at a Gold Skulltula positioned high on the wall vines in the rising platform room just before the Barinade boss fight inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly.

#13 – Platform Puzzle Prize

Required: Young Link and Boomerang Boomerang

Location: This is the room just before Barinade, where platforms rise and fall after you hit a switch. The Gold Skulltula is high on the climbable vines on the wall.

Kill it with the Boomerang, which also brings the token back, or collect it as you climb the vines. Deal with the Biri in the room first.

Forest Temple (5 Skulltulas) [#14-18]

Required: Adult Link and Hookshot Hookshot

Location: In the temple’s large central chamber, look high up on the wall of the eastern balcony, above the doorway that leads to the northeast courtyard. The Gold Skulltula sits there.

Stand on the balcony and Hookshot it, then take the token. The spider is hard to see, so rely on the green Hookshot target and Navi’s call.

#16 – Courtyard Island Crawler

Required: Adult Link and Hookshot Hookshot

Aim the Hookshot at the front of the chest to pull yourself up onto it, then look around the corner of the wall on that ledge: the token is crawling high on the wall there.

Hookshot it from the ledge, since it is well above your head. The token drops where it hangs, right on the island, so there is nothing to chase. Open the chest while you are up there.

Required: Adult Link and Hookshot Hookshot

Location: In the northwest courtyard, the one with the checkerboard floor blocks, enter from the upper balcony, which you can reach after twisting the hallway. The Gold Skulltula is high on the wall.
