Create a save file
Register your name
Start a new game from the file select screen and choose an empty slot. Register a name for the hero; the official name is Link, but you can type a name of your own. Your levels, items and spells are kept when you continue after a Game Over.

North Castle and the first forest
Start in the North Castle
The game begins in the North Castle, also called the North Palace, where Zelda sleeps. Link starts with three lives, four segments of Life and a sword at level 1. The NEXT counter at the top right tracks progress toward your next level, and it begins at 50.

Leave the castle and head for Rauru
Leave North Palace and follow the road east. Rauru Town lies due east of the palace, next to a boulder. Stay on the road when you can: monster icons only appear on the grass, and orange Moblins in the woods throw spears that fall as they fly, so crouch behind your shield. Just north of the road is a small patch of woods with a 50 EXP P-Bag lying among a few Aches, which is enough for your first level-up.

Along the forest path a small blue bottle lies on the ground. Walk over it to pick it up. A blue bottle restores a small amount of magic, so grab it whenever you pass.

Your first level-up
Enemies give experience, and when the NEXT counter fills, a NEXT UP window opens. It lists the cost of each upgrade: Attack 200, Magic 100 and Life 50. Move the cursor to LIFE WILL GO UP and choose it to raise your Life to level 2, which adds to your maximum life.

Rauru Town and the Shield spell
Find the first town
Rauru Town is the first town you reach, and its houses hold hints. Stand next to a townsperson and press attack to talk to them. One hint says only the Hammer can destroy a roadblock; you find the Hammer later on Death Mountain, so keep it in mind.

Get the Shield spell
Talk to the woman in purple outside the house just left of the town entrance, then follow her inside. Walk to the right side of the house to reach the old man waiting at the bottom of the basement. He has no requirement for teaching you, and he tells you to use this magic in Parapa Desert.

Shield halves the damage Link takes from enemies, which helps in the desert and at the palace ahead. Once you have it, the spell menu lists Shield at a cost of 32 Magic Points at level 1.

To cast Shield, press Start on a side-scrolling screen, choose Shield in the menu, then press Start and Select. The effect lasts only while you stay on the current screen, so cast it again after each screen change.
The forest, the lake and the first palace
Cross the forest
Leave Rauru and take the dark cave in the mountains to the north: it is the only way to the desert. A Lowder lurks in the dark, but you can see its feet. Once you have the Candle from Parapa Palace, the cave is lit on later trips. Orange spear-throwers and other enemies wander the path outside, so stop and strike when they pause. You come out in the north-east corner of the continent, in a great desert.

Cross the pillars and the lake
Past the forest the path runs along a mountain edge with a lake below. Jump from one pillar platform to the next across the water to keep going. Time each jump so you land on the next platform rather than the water.

Reach the palace approach
On the side-scrolling desert screen under the grey stone arches, a Heart Container lies on the grass among the pillars, guarded by a Goriya. Defeat the Goriya (it throws boomerangs, and its boomerang can hurt badly at low levels) and take it; it adds one segment to the life meter and refills it. Afterwards, go back north over the pillar gaps to the palace. See Heart Container Locations. A grey stone arch with a pillar marks the approach to the first palace. Walk toward it along the desert coast. Parapa Palace, the first palace, has its entrance at ground level, so you need nothing to get in.
