NeedsMaster Sword and Lakebed Temple done, Clawshot, bombs, Hero’s Bow, Lantern with oil, Iron Boots, an empty bottle

OptionalNone of this is required for the story, but all of it counts toward 100%

This is a long clean-up run in the middle of the game. You collect every Poe Soul that is open now, take Jovani’s 20-soul reward, pay Malo Mart’s donations for the Castle Town shop and the Magic Armor, learn the Helm Splitter, and sweep the overworld for stamps and Heart Pieces. The later Poes (31 more) are in the table at the end and in each later chapter. Directions use the Normal Mode layout. Hero Mode mirrors the world, so swap left and right and east and west.

Poe rules and what to bring

How Poes work

Poes are seen and hurt only as Wolf Link. Look for a small floating lantern, press the sense button to reveal the Poe, lock on, hit it until it falls, then bite the soul. Most overworld Poes appear only at night, while cave, grotto and dungeon Poes are there at any hour. There is no way to skip time, so do the caves while it is light, and then stand somewhere that time passes until dusk. In the HD version the map screen shows how many Poes you have and how many remain in each area (with the portal view off).

Gear

Bring bombs, the Hero’s Bow (for Bomb Arrows), a Lantern with oil, an empty bottle (for Yellow Chu Jelly or oil), and the Iron Boots. Take the Zora Armor off in caves with Ice and Fire Bubbles. For Malo Mart you need 1,798 Rupees (1,000 for the bridge, 200 for the shop once the Hot Spring Water is delivered, 598 for the armor); the optional Malo Mart stamp (50) and the optional 20-Rupee barrel of Hot Spring Water for the Goron at the south gate bring the total to 1,868. The Big Wallet (1,000) is enough, since you pay in stages. The Rupee spots near the end of this chapter help.

Poe Souls you can take at any time of day

Lake Hylia Cavern: 3 Poes, Heart Piece #24

The cavern is behind a boulder in the south-west corner of Lake Hylia: climb the ladder on the south-west cliffs, turn left and bomb it. Take plenty of bombs and arrows, a full Lantern and an empty bottle for Yellow Chu Jelly. The path is nearly straight: each room has two or three boulders, and bombing every one finds either a chest or the way forward. Halfway and at the end are dead ends where a beam of light teleports you back to the entrance, so do not step into the light until the end.

The three Poes are in the 3rd room, the 8th room and the 11th room. The 5th and 11th rooms each have two unlit torches: light them with the Lantern while you are human, then switch to wolf. In the 5th room the torches reveal the stamp of the Hylian letter J; the 10th room holds the treasure-chest stamp; the last room’s torches open the chest with Piece of Heart #24. Expect 130 or more Rupees from the other chests. Outside the cavern, a circle of grass can be dug as a wolf: kill the Water Toadpoli in the room below (knock their rocks back with the Shield Attack, or use the bow) and open the chest for the stamp of the Hylian letter S.

Kakariko Gorge Cavern: 1 Poe

Bomb the boulder in the south wall of Kakariko Gorge and enter with a full Lantern. Burn the webs. From the entrance go right, right, left, left to reach the Poe. The cavern also has Piece of Heart #8 (right, right, left, right), a Purple Rupee and the Hylian letter O stamp, which you collected in the Lanayru chapter.

North Hyrule Field grotto: 2 Poes

Go to North Hyrule Field from the west of Castle Town. As soon as you arrive, look north: three trees stand in a row with low bushes between them. Use your senses as a wolf and dig between them. In the cave below, beat the Deku Babas and both Imp Poes.

Lake Hylia Poe Souls

Three on the lake (night)

Warp to Lake Hylia and wait for dark. The first Poe is at the stone watchtower on the higher ledge in the south-west: climb the ladder and it floats at the base (time passes here, so you can wait). The second floats around the southernmost platform of the group of wooden platforms in the south-central part of the lake. The third is on the small patch of land at the east end of the lake. Swim or use a warp to get close, then become a wolf and fight.

Falbi’s Flight-By-Fowl: 2 Poes (night)

Talk to Fyer to be fired to the top of the lake, then pay Falbi 20 Rupees and grab a Cucco. The first Poe floats on a small platform tucked under the launch cliff. Jump off and turn gently so you fly back north; a hard stick angle only slides Link sideways. The same ledge has a dig spot: dig down and, if you defeat all the Shell Blades in the water below, you earn 100 Rupees.

For the second Poe fly straight ahead to the tiered Isle of Riches. The Poe hovers over the second-lowest platform. If you have not yet taken Piece of Heart #25, it is in the chest on the second tier from the top. Land carefully so you do not drop to the lowest level.

Upper Zora’s River and Zora’s Domain

Upper Zora’s River: 1 Poe (night)

At the south end of Upper Zora’s River a small hill of land rises from the water. Swim over, careful that the current does not sweep you away, and fight the Poe at the top.

Zora’s Domain: 2 Poes

One Poe is behind the waterfall. Reach it from the west side of the Domain with Midna’s jumps over the gaps. The other floats on the ledge on the east side, near where you caught the Male Dragonfly.

Kakariko Village, Graveyard and Death Mountain

Village: 2 Poes (night)

Go through Barnes Bombs and out its second-floor door. One Poe floats over the burned bomb storehouse (it caught fire while you were collecting Tears of Light). Climb on to the top of the building where Talo stands guard; the other Poe floats on the wooden ledge near its door.

Graveyard: 2 Poes (night)

One Poe floats in plain view in the middle of the graveyard. For the other, push the first gravestone on your right as you enter, and a Poe climbs out of the grave.

Death Mountain: 1 Poe (night)

On the Death Mountain trail let the first Goron throw you up, then run to the second Goron and have him throw you toward the ledge on the west side. Grab it and look around the upper ledge for the Poe. Further north on the same ledge is the hole on the left that leads to a cave with Piece of Heart #20, if you have not taken it yet.

Faron Woods and Hyrule Field

Faron Woods: 1 Poe (night)

Warp to North Faron Woods and head east to the purple fog. Use Midna’s jumps from the bridge to the south-east part of the map, then walk to the east end and make more jumps to the huge tree in the middle of the swamp, where you once found Shadow Insects. The Poe floats there.

Kakariko Gorge ledge: 1 Poe (night)

Just north-west of the bridge across Kakariko Gorge, a Poe floats on the high ledge beside a lone tree.

South Hyrule Field, Faron side: 1 Poe (night)

Leave Faron Woods into South Hyrule Field, follow the path ahead and cross the wooden bridge. A Poe floats on the higher ledge on your right.

Great Bridge of Hylia crag: 1 Poe (night)

South of the main bridge is a smaller wooden bridge, and boulders on the cliff beyond it. Shoot Bomb Arrows at the boulders to uncover Clawshot targets. Hook the lowest one and work along the ledge with the targets to the Poe. A chest on the way holds 50 Rupees. In the circle of grass here you can dig as a wolf into a cave with Ice and Fire Bubbles (take the Zora Armor off first) and a chest holding the stamp of the Hylian letter M.

Castle Town surroundings: 3 Poes (night)

Warp to Castle Town and head south. A makeshift theater stands in the ruins, with a Poe floating among the wreckage. Leave by the east gate and a Poe floats above the bridge straight ahead. Leave by the south gate, cross the bridge and turn right to find the third.

In North Hyrule Field one more Poe floats above the bridge in the middle of the area; kill any nearby enemies first.

Jovani’s reward at 20 Poe Souls

Great Fairy’s Tears and the Ghost Lantern

With at least 20 souls, go to Castle Town as a wolf. Walk to the south gate and take the east alley. A niche to the north leads to the house surrounded by cats, which is Jovani‘s. Dig through the soft spot to the left of the door. Give Jovani your souls: he and his cat Gengle move again and he hands over a bottle of Great Fairy‘s Tears, which refills all your hearts and briefly boosts your attack until you take damage. This is your fourth bottle; see Bottle Locations. In the HD version he also gives you the Ghost Lantern, which needs no oil and lights up when an uncollected Poe is nearby.

He asks for all 60. When you finish he returns to normal and appears in Telma’s Bar, gives you 200 Rupees, and afterward his cat Gengle pays 200 Rupees every time you talk to him, once per visit to Castle Town. Use the Poe Souls list for the rest.

Malo Mart donations and the Magic Armor

Step 1: the bridge (1,000 Rupees)

Warp to Kakariko Village. Gor Liggs now sits outside Malo Mart and worries about the young Goron stuck at the broken bridge by Castle Town’s east gate. Inside, the elder Gor Ebizo explains Malo’s plan: first repair the bridge that connects Kakariko to Castle Town, then buy the Castle Town shop, Chudley’s Fine Goods, whose prices are so high that the cheapest item is out of reach. (To get in there at all you pay Soal 10 Rupees to polish your shoes.) The bridge needs 1,000 Rupees; donate all you have and return until the total is 1,000. Turn in Golden Bugs to Agitha for cash if you need it.

Step 2: Hot Spring Water and Heart Piece #19

The bridge is rebuilt, but the Goron lies beside it, too tired to work and asking for Hot Spring Water. Back in Kakariko, Malo Mart now asks 2,000 Rupees to move into Castle Town, but you can reduce this by helping him. Talk to Gor Liggs outside and agree to take the Hot Spring Water. You appear in the Bridge of Eldin part of Hyrule Field with a barrel to carry to Castle Town. Walk along the southern edge; Bulblin archers shoot at you, but keep moving and keep your distance, because a hit breaks the barrel and you must start again with a new one.

At the bridge, lock on to the Goron and throw the barrel at him. He rolls to Kakariko and back with a barrel on his head, and drops Piece of Heart #19 on the bridge as he passes. Walk over and pick it up.

Optional: the Goron now sells Hot Spring Water in Castle Town for 20 Rupees. Take a barrel to the Goron standing in front of boulders at the south end of the field outside the south gate. He starts breaking the rocks and, after a full day cycle, opens the path between Castle Town and South Hyrule Field.

Step 3: the shop (200 Rupees)

Return to Gor Ebizo. The cost has dropped from 2,000 to 200 Rupees. Pay it. When you next enter Castle Town the Postman delivers a letter saying the new Malo Mart is open.

Buy the armor and the stamp

The new Malo Mart stands in the south-east of the central square, on the site of Chudley’s shop. Buy the Malo Mart stamp for 50 Rupees (optional, HD only) and the Magic Armor for 598 Rupees. The armor makes hits cost Rupees instead of hearts while you have money left; at zero Rupees it becomes as heavy as the Iron Boots. Bombs, Water Bombs, potions and arrows are also on sale. See Malo Mart and Magic Armor.

Castle Town goodies

STAR Game: Big Quiver

In human form, take the west alley to the large purple tent where Purlo runs the STAR Game. Pay 10 Rupees and collect all the glowing orbs in the cage using the Clawshot: run straight and climb the first ledge for the first orbs, jump left, Clawshot across the cage, then climb again for the rest. A clean run takes about 10 seconds. Finish in under 30 seconds for the Big Quiver (60 arrows). The Giant Quiver (100) comes from the same game later with the Double Clawshots.

Golden Wolf: Helm Splitter

Leave through the south gate and go to the west side of the field. The Golden Wolf waits there (you set the marker with the Howling Stone in the Sacred Grove approach). The Hero’s Shade first asks you to prove the Back Slice, then teaches the Helm Splitter: after a Shield Attack, press A to leap and strike through the enemy’s helmet.

Female Butterfly

In the field west of Castle Town, Clawshot the vines up to the high ledge on the north-west cliff, where the Female Golden Butterfly flutters. Pull her in with the Gale Boomerang. If you have not caught the Male, he is in the pink flowers south along the road (see Lake Hylia side quests). A vine-covered rock pillar nearby is topped by a ring of stones: dig there as a wolf to reach a cave, pull the shields off the Helmasaurs with the Clawshot, defeat them and open the chest for the Angry Link stamp.

Lake Hylia goodies

Lanayru Spring: Heart Piece #23

Enter the Lanayru Spring cave, turn right and walk around the edge to the vines. Climb them with the Clawshot and take the south doorway. Open the two chests, then light both torches with the Lantern and a big chest appears with Piece of Heart #23.

Fruit Pop Flight Challenge: Heart Piece #26

As Wolf Link, talk to Plumm the bird at the east end of the lake or between the bridges near Fyer. Howl beside the Hawk Grass to summon a Kargarok that flies you up the lake and Zora’s River. Watermelons score 1 point, oranges 3 and strawberries 10, and each same fruit in a row doubles in value up to ten in a row (a strawberry chain tops out at 5,120 per fruit). Score at least 10,000 for Piece of Heart #26. A repeat run pays 100 Rupees, and a top score of 61,454 pays 200. If you crash, you return to Lake Hylia and can try again; a good run ends at Upper Zora’s River.

Miiverse stamp run

Ordon and South Hyrule Field

In Ordon Ranch, enter the barn as a wolf and dig beside the Postman. Kill the rats and the Chu; it may be a Rare Chu, whose Rare Chu Jelly works like Great Fairy‘s Tears, so bottle it. Break the pots for Rupees, light three torches with the Lantern and open the chest for the Happy Link stamp.

In the south-east corner of South Hyrule Field, two small grass patches sit against the wall. Dig, and the chest below holds the Wolf Link stamp.

North Hyrule Field

Follow the river north; to its west is a circle of grass. Dig, kill the Skulltulas, light the torches and take the stamp of the Hylian letter P. South-east of the bridge is another grass circle: dig, kill the Chus and open the chest for the stamp of the letter I.

Bridge of Eldin

You cannot warp to the north side of the broken bridge; ride Epona. North of the bridge, hook the Clawshot target on the north-east wall and go around the corner into a cave that plays like the Goron Mines. Follow the path, jump off the ledges and use the Iron Boots on the magnetic fields to cling to the wall, then take the boots off. At the bottom, light both torches with the Lantern for the Piece of Heart stamp, and open the chest at the very end for Piece of Heart #11.

South of the bridge, find the brown patch of soil north of the large pool in the south-west and dig. The cave is full of Bomskits (use the bow), so light the torches and take the stamp of the letter C. West of the great arch there is another brown patch; dig for a chest with the Sad Link stamp.

Goron Mines

Warp to Death Mountain and enter the Goron Mines. Use the magnetic cranes to cross the main room, go to the big outdoor room that had the Bulblin archers, and in its north-east corner Clawshot to the grating high above. Climb up and open the chest for the stamp of the Hylian letter U. This is the Clawshot chest mentioned in the Goron Mines chapter.

Barnes Bombs now also sells Bomblings. If you own all three Bomb Bags you can sell back regular bombs and fill the third with Bomblings, but it is not needed. The full list is on Miiverse Stamps.

Rupee spots for the donations

Quick Rupees

Kakariko: hit the bell on the roof above the Sanctuary with a Bomb Arrow, then Midna-jump to the top of the roof for a Silver Rupee (200). South Hyrule Field: dive beside the first bridge, hook the Clawshot target and open the hidden chest (100). Outside Castle Town’s south gate, climb the vines on the big pillar at the east end and dig for a chest of Rupees. Lake Hylia: fly with a Cucco from Falbi toward the Lanayru Spring, where two pillars hold two chests (a Purple Rupee and 100); lower yourself onto one and use the Clawshot to reach the other. In the Lanayru Spring, dive for small chests and bomb the boulders for more. Turn in Golden Bugs to Agitha.

Guays drop Rupees when you defeat the whole flock, and they return when you re-enter the area: the high ledge in Kakariko Gorge, the back of the Graveyard, the middle of the Great Bridge of Hylia and the pillar outside Castle Town’s south gate.
