Melari’s Mines: the White Sword
Shrink and return to Melari
After the Cave of Flames you step out onto the Mount Crenel ledge, and Ezlo reminds you to go back to Melari. Stand on the glowing rock beside the cave exit and press R to shrink at this Minish Portal. You must stay Minish-sized for the whole visit to the mines.

Receive the White Sword
Walk back down into the mines and speak to Melari at his forge. He has finished reforging the Picori Blade and hands you the White Sword, which replaces your grandfather’s sword. It becomes your sword for the rest of the game, though it still needs the four Elements to reach full strength.

Melari explains that the doorway to the Elemental Sanctuary opens only once every hundred years and that the blade must be filled with the power of the four Elements there. Let him finish, because he also tells you about a shortcut down the mountain that starts in front of the mine entrance. Then leave the mine.

Down Mount Crenel to Hyrule Town
Step on the portal rock outside to grow back to normal size, then take the shortcut Melari described. Drop down the ledge, use the ladder and climb down the climbable rock walls and the vine to reach the foot of the mountain. Head east out of the Crenel area, cross the bridge in Trilby Highlands and follow the path on to Hyrule Town.

Hyrule Town: Wind Crest and Swiftblade
Walk north through Hyrule Town to the stone marker in the northern part of town, close to the exit to North Hyrule Field. Stand in front of it and press A to activate the Hyrule Town Wind Crest. Nothing is needed to activate it, and once you own the Ocarina of Wind it works as a fast-travel point.

Optional stop: Swiftblade, the sword master, lives in a house in the south part of town. Once you own the White Sword he teaches the Rock Breaker technique and gives you a Tiger Scroll. It is not needed to reach the Sanctuary, so visit now or on a later pass through town.

Hyrule Castle and the Elemental Sanctuary
Through Hyrule Castle to the glowing door
Leave Hyrule Town by the north exit, cross North Hyrule Field and enter Hyrule Castle through the front doors. Go through the castle and out into the inner courtyard, where a large doorway glows at the end of the garden path. Walk up to it and go in.

The entrance rooms
The first chamber is only an entrance hall, so go straight north. In the second room the door behind you shuts and flashing panels appear on the floor. Continue north to the central chamber.

Infuse the sword with Earth and Fire
Walk to the pedestal in the middle of the chamber and press A to thrust the White Sword into the slot. The Earth and Fire Elements flow into the blade, so it is now infused with the first two Elements. The Water and Wind Elements are added on later visits.

Learn to split in two
In the room with the stone tablet, stand on one of the flashing panels and hold the sword button until the charge gauge in the corner of the screen fills. Keep holding it and walk onto the second flashing panel to split off a clone. The clone fades when your charge runs out, and Ezlo points out that you can do this whenever you see flashing panels.

Return to the second room, where the exit is blocked. Two panels there must be pressed at once: stand on one, charge, and walk your clone onto the other. The way out opens, so leave through the green corridor and dismiss the clone with R.

Hyrule Castle Garden: Piece of Heart
Out to the Garden
Walk back out through the castle and across the drawbridge into Hyrule Castle Garden. A long cutscene starts here in which Vaati confronts you and Ezlo explains his past. There is nothing to collect or fight, so just let it play out.

The hidden ladder
Once you have control again, go to the lower right (southeast) part of the garden and cut the grass to uncover a hidden ladder. Climb down and follow the cave past the Keese to the Piece of Heart on a pedestal at the end. Four pieces make a full heart, so keep count.

Trilby Highlands: red Kinstone piece
The ladder cave and the clone puzzle
Head back through Hyrule Town and out by the western exit to Trilby Highlands. Take the ladder down to the cave below. This is the cave where a Business Scrub later sells a bottle, so ignore the scrub for now.

Stand on one of the flashing panels, charge your sword and walk the clone onto the other panel. With both of you in place, push the big stone block out of the way, then climb the ladder at the top of the room to leave the cave.

Bomb the cracked wall
Outside, walk north past the pond and the Blue Octorok and lay a Bomb against the cracked cliff wall at the top. Inside, bats circle a chest in the middle of the cave. Open it for a red Kinstone piece, then leave.

Percy’s house
Shrink at the stump
Next to the pond, step on the wooden stump to shrink and walk left through the tall grass to the hollow under the big tree. It leads into the tiny house of Percy, a travelling poet who tells you he lost half of a red Kinstone. Fusing a red piece with him later makes the fallen tree by his house stand up again. Leave by the door mat and walk east towards Western Wood.

On towards the next Element
A cutscene at the castle shows the king ordering a search for the Light Force; you take no part in it. Afterwards Ezlo says you must find the next Element. Follow the path through Western Wood to the signpost, which points to Castor Wilds and warns you to bring your Pegasus Boots, the next item you need.
