Link wakes up with a fairy in his face and a summons from the Great Deku Tree. Before he can answer it, Mido blocks the path until Link owns a sword and a shield. Practise the basic moves at the training grounds, crawl into the hidden passage for the Kokiri Sword, collect at least 40 rupees for the Deku Shield, buy it at the Kokiri Shop, and walk back to Mido. He steps aside, and the Great Deku Tree gives you your first real task.

Navi flies into Link’s tree house and calls you awake. She says the Great Deku Tree himself sent her to fetch you. Let the conversation run, then get out of bed, walk to the door and head outside. The area banner Kokiri Forest appears as you step out. The game saves automatically at spots like this, so watch for the Saving icon in the corner of the screen.

Saria

Meet Saria

Saria greets you by name as soon as you step out. Climb down the ladder, and she meets you below, spots Navi and cheers that a fairy has finally come to you. She tells you to hurry to the Great Deku Tree. Follow the forest path toward the Great Deku Tree.

Mido blocks the path

Talk to Mido

Mido stands in the path and refuses to let you through. Navi tells him the Great Deku Tree sent for Link, but Mido says the monsters ahead are too dangerous and that he will not step aside. You cannot argue your way past him. Link needs a sword and a shield first, so turn back into the village.

Training grounds

Pick up rupees on the way

Walk past the House of the Twins and collect what lies in the open. A green rupee and a blue rupee turn up beside the clay pots just past the House of the Twins sign. A little further on, jump across the stepping stones in the pond: a green rupee rests on a rock and a blue one sits on a round mossy stump. Hold Dive to swim the water below them if you want to look for more. Break clay pots as you pass, since they can drop hearts. Every rupee counts, because the Deku Shield costs 40.

Targeting lesson

The path ends at the training grounds, where a red-haired Kokiri swordsman offers to teach you how to fight monsters. Answer Yes, master! and stand back while he demonstrates. Your fairy flies to whatever you can target, so hold Target and walk around the scarecrow while it stays locked. Moving while targeted keeps Link facing the enemy, which matters in every fight.

Swordsman telling Link to move around and target the scarecrow

Side jump and backflip

Next he teaches two dodges. For the side jump, target the scarecrow, tilt the stick sideways and press Jump. For the backflip, target it, tilt the stick backward and press Jump. Repeat each one until he approves. If you forget to target the scarecrow, he points it out and lets you try again.

The hidden sword

The swordsman has one more move to teach, but it is harder, and he will only show it to a pupil who can wield a sword. He says a hidden sword lies somewhere in Kokiri Forest, in a space too tight for him, because small spaces creep him out. Leave the grounds and follow the path past the stone arch and the wooden sign beside it. The hidden entrance begins there.

Kokiri Sword

Crawl through the hidden passage

Go through the stone arch into the dark passage and follow it past the wooden sign, with Navi lighting the way. A blue rupee waits beside the mossy wall, so pick it up, then crawl through the low opening under the stone slabs. Keep walking along the narrow channel until you reach a rope ladder set into the cliff. Climb it. The prompts show Let Go and Jump if you need to drop back down.

Kokiri Sword

Kokiri Sword

At the top of the ladder, jump onto the rock ledge, where a large chest sits beside a round stone boulder. Open it to get the Kokiri Sword. Navi remarks that you just need a shield now. Press the Swing Sword button once to try the blade out.

Cut the bushes and leave

Use your new sword to cut the bushes on the ledge. They drop green rupees. Leave the ledge by the stone steps on the far side and walk through the dark opening into the training clearing. The swordsman is waiting there. He asks if that is what he thinks it is, praises the find and offers to teach you the move he promised.

Jump attack

Learn the jump attack

The swordsman explains that you jump and swing the sword at the same time. Target the scarecrow, then jump and slash. The Jump Attack prompt says it deals double damage for attacking while in the air. Land a few against the scarecrow until he is satisfied and says you have mastered everything he can teach.

Rupees for the Deku Shield

Fado

Know-It-All Brothers and Fado

Leave the grounds and cut the grass on the way. You will pass the House of the Know-It-All Brothers, whose sign reads that a true adventurer keeps a good record of their experiences. Check the sign to save, or open the pause menu to read the Basic Controls. A Kokiri named Fado talks about the forest and reminds you that the Great Deku Tree still needs you. Your wallet should now hold about 36 rupees.

Show Saria the sword

Walk back to Saria, who is sitting on a rock. She notices the sword and says you did well to find it. She tells you that Mido will not let you pass without both a sword and a shield, and that you can buy a shield at the Kokiri Shop. Her warning is that it is expensive and you will need a lot of rupees. Other Kokiri comment on Navi as you walk by.

Help with the yard work

A Kokiri says Mido has ordered him to do a bunch of yard work, and that all you need to do is pull up or cut the grass around here. Help him. The grass hides green rupees. When you finish, he thanks you and hands over a blue rupee.

House of the Twins song

Continue past the log bridges to the House of the Twins. Talk to the Kokiri inside and say you want to hear his song when he asks. The song is about rupees: one for green, five for blue, red is twenty.

Kokiri Shop

Deku Shield

Deku Shield

Jump down the ledge to the Kokiri Shop and talk to the Shop Owner. Ask about the Deku Shield, which costs 40 rupees. Buy it, and a wallet of 49 drops to 9. The Shop Owner then asks if you know how to use a shield. The shelves look bare because Mido is still blocking the tunnel.

Raise the shield

Hold Raise to lift the shield in front of you and block enemy attacks. A Kokiri kid makes you try it, since it will not work unless you actually raise the shield and hold it. If you ever lose your shield, you can come back for another. Before you leave, pick up the blue rupee in the corner of the shop, which takes your wallet from 9 to 14.

Clear the rocks

A Kokiri is struggling with a yard full of rocks. Pick them up and Throw them out of the way. A green rupee turns up along the way. When the yard is clear, choose I cleaned up for you. He says that with a sword and a shield you should be fine, and he pays you with another blue rupee.

Search Mido’s house

Follow the path to the large tree house whose sign reads Mansion of the Great Mido, Boss of the Kokiri. Go inside and open the chests: three blue rupees and a green rupee, worth 16 rupees in all. The game saves while you are in there. When you step outside, a Kokiri at the stairs mentions that the training grounds are up above, but you have already finished there.

Past Mido to the Great Deku Tree

Walk back to Mido

Head back along the paths toward the Great Deku Tree. One tunnel ends at a Kokiri guard who says nobody is allowed outside the forest, so turn around. Follow the stone path past the wooden signs and up the rock ledge, where the prompt shows Jump, to the dark trail where Mido waits. Walk up to him with the sword on your back and the shield in hand.

Mido gives way

Mido notices the sword on your back, then asks how someone like you got both items when he has neither. He insists that owning gear does not make you strong, and he still wonders what the Great Deku Tree and Saria see in you. But he lets you through. Move on along the path into the darkness beyond, where the first monsters wait.

Deku Stick

Deku Stick

A Deku Baba, a red bulb on a stalk, snaps at you on the path. Target it and cut its stem with the Kokiri Sword. The stem drops a Deku Stick, and the box explains that the branch is flammable and breaks easily. Light its tip to set it on fire or swing it as a weapon. Cut down more Deku Babas along the path to build up your stock, since the stick count climbs with each one.

Great Deku Tree

Talk to the Great Deku Tree

Follow the trail until the Great Deku Tree comes into view. Tell him you have returned, and listen. He asks whether you have had nightmares each night, and then explains that he holds the Spiritual Stone of the Forest. An evil being has put a monster inside his roots to steal it. He asks you and Navi to enter his depths and defeat the creature before it reaches the stone.

Walk to the tree

Leave the cutscene and walk toward the mist-covered entrance. A Deku Baba attacks near the lily pads, so fight it with the sword or the stick. Collect the sticks it leaves, then climb the rocky slope toward the bright opening. The area banner Great Deku Tree appears as you step inside. Navi talks about the dungeon ahead, which the next chapter covers floor by floor.
