RewardsPiece of Heart Heart Piece #6 (fishing), Golden Skull Token Gold Skulltula #14, Bug a bug in a bottle, the Stir the Scarecrow’s Soul! side quest

Lake Hylia is an optional stop for child Link, but it holds a Heart Piece and a Gold Skulltula that are easy to pick up now. You meet Kaepora Gaebora on the lakeside, talk to the scientist in Lakeside Laboratory, start the scarecrow’s side quest, catch a bug for the soft soil by the houses, and finish at the fishing hut by landing a fish of 56 cm.

Arriving at Lake Hylia

Kaepora Gaebora

Kaepora Gaebora at the rope bridge

The Lake Hylia banner appears as you reach the water. Swim toward the stone island and the rope bridge beside it, holding the Dash button to speed up. Climb out near the octagonal stone platform and cross the wooden bridge. Kaepora Gaebora perches on the far side and tells you the Zora watch over the lake.

The owl offers a lift to Hyrule Castle. Answer “No, thanks!” if you want to stay at the lake. He tells you to ask whenever you change your mind. Nothing is gained here, but it is a quick way back to Hyrule Castle.

Lakeside Laboratory

Talk to the Lake Scientist

Walk on across the next bridge into the lakeside village and follow the path to the house with the Lakeside Laboratory sign. Go inside and talk to the Lake Scientist. He boasts about his reputation and offers the pool in his lab for diving practice. He suggests you ask the Zora to teach you how to dive deep. That lesson is in Zora River and Zora Domain. You can come back to the lake later in Poes, the Hall of Fallen Foes and Lake Hylia.

Stir the Scarecrow’s Soul! (scarecrow field)

Bonooru

Meet Bonooru the scarecrow

Leave the lab and walk past the wooden houses to the field with the scarecrow on the cliff side. The scarecrow introduces himself as Bonooru and asks you to play something soulful on your ocarina. Talking to him starts the New Event, Stir the Scarecrow’s Soul!. He asks you to step back so he can see you better.

Play the scarecrow a song

Talk to him again and he tells you to try playing something. Open the staff, play a short tune of your own and confirm it. He calls it a great song and says he has it memorized perfectly. He then offers to share your song from before, so open the staff once more and play another tune. He finishes with “Whew! And that’s it.” He asks you to come back with something fresh whenever you compose a new one. The tune matters for a later chapter, when you can use the scarecrow’s help with the Hookshot.

Find Pierre

After the song, a quest note reading “A soul-shaking song…” appears. Walk a little further along the field and find a second scarecrow, Pierre. He says his heart’s desire is to wander in search of soul-shaking songs, and the side quest stays open while you carry on.

Bug in a bottle and Gold Skulltula

Bug

Catch a bug

Follow the path along the lake shore from the scarecrow field. Look for the patch of loose soil in the grass and catch the bug scurrying around it with an empty bottle. The message tells you the bug is in the bottle and that taking the lid off releases it. The soft soil at Lake Hylia needs one.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #14, soft soil by the barrels

Go back to the village houses and look for the barrels and sacks stacked against the wall of the house on the lake side. Stand on the loose patch of soil in front of them, press Use to open the bottle with the bug, and a Gold Skulltula token drops. You get “You got a Gold Skulltula token! You’ve collected 14 tokens so far.”

Fishing hut

Walk to the hut

It is night by now. Follow the shore around the lake to the log hut with the “Wanna fish?” sign. The Fishing-Pond Man is behind the counter. This is his pond and he asks whether you are new. For 10 rupees you can fish as often as you like, and a big catch wins a prize.

Learn to fish

Pay the 10 rupees, take the fishing rod and ask him for tips. He walks you through it: stroll round the pond, pick a fish and cast your line near it, using the Cast Line prompt. Wiggle the lure with the Move control until the fish bites, press Hook when it strikes, and tilt the rod the way the fish swims so it can’t thrash free. Press Reel once it tires.

Your first catch brings up a “You wanna keep this fish?” prompt with a prize on offer. Back at the counter he says he can remind you of the basics whenever you ask. Walk back out and cast again, this time from the wooden pier.

Catch the 56 cm fish

Keep working the lure near a bigger fish. When you land one, the Fishing-Pond Man tells you it looks to be 56 cm or so and offers you a choice to keep it. Choose “I’ll keep it.” Take it to the counter, where it goes on the scale at 56 cm. The tank record board still reads 40 cm, caught by him.

Piece of Heart

Piece of Heart #6, fishing prize

Talk to him and say you are finished when he asks. He weighs your fish, calls it a BIG one and hands over a Piece of Heart for it. This is Heart Piece #6, and the message tells you to collect two more pieces for a full container. A sign by the shore warns that the sinking lure is strictly forbidden and fish caught with it do not count, so use the normal lure.
