This chapter takes you up Death Mountain Trail to Goron City, where Darunia is shut in his room and refusing to see anyone. Zelda’s Lullaby gets you through his door, Saria’s Song gets him dancing again, and he rewards you with the Goron Bracelet. You then burn and blast your way out of the city to the cleared entrance of Dodongo Cavern, collecting a Gold Skulltula token on the way.

Death Mountain Trail

Climb the trail

Take the stairs and stone gate at the top of Kakariko Village to reach Death Mountain Trail. Follow the red rock path uphill while Navi urges you to climb, and deal with the Tektites and other small enemies that hop across the road. Green rupees lie along the way. Where the path ends against a rock face, grab the chain-link net and climb it, then keep going up the slope.

The blocked Dodongo Cavern entrance

Further up, the trail reaches a cave mouth plugged by a huge round boulder, with a sign beside it reading “Dodongo Cavern / No Entry Without Permission!”. You cannot move the boulder yet. A Goron standing nearby explains that the cavern is a source of rock roast, a prized Goron food, and that with the entrance sealed nobody can harvest it. He offers to walk you toward Goron City, so follow him along the trail.

Goron City gate and the bomb flower

An arrow sign at the top of the road points to Goron City. Just before the gate, a Goron looks after a bomb flower growing in a fenced patch. Talk to him and ask about it: bomb flowers are special plants that grow around Goron City and Dodongo Cavern, and the Gorons pick them for mining. He adds that the Goron Bracelet would let you carry one, but you do not own it yet, so walk on through the cave into the city.

Goron City

Look around the city

The Goron City banner appears once you are inside the cave. The Gorons here are short of food and worried about their leader, whom they call Big Bro Darunia, who has holed up in a room downstairs. Read the sign about the Goron who rolls nonstop. There is a prize for stopping him, but you cannot manage it yet. Cross the rope bridge over the lava, climb the stone steps and talk to the Gorons along the way, including the one who explains that Deku Sticks light bomb flowers.

Open Darunia’s door with Zelda’s Lullaby

The red door marked with a Goron symbol is Darunia’s. A Goron guard says it opens only for the messenger of someone important, with proof of who sent them. Step onto the Triforce mark on the carpet in front of the door, take out the Ocarina and play Zelda’s Lullaby (see Ocarina songs if you need the notes). The door opens with a shout of “Open… GORO!” and Darunia calls you in.

Darunia

Darunia turns you away

Darunia, the Big Boss of the Gorons, is expecting a royal messenger and is unimpressed to find a scrawny kid. He complains about the bomb flower trouble and the rock shortage, then orders you out. Navi protests, but nothing you say works. The quest log now lists the Spiritual Stone of Fire. The fix is a song instead of words, so walk out of the chamber and take a look around the city first.

Goron shop

Light a Deku Stick at one of the torches in Darunia’s corridor if you want to carry fire through the city, then find the shop in the city. The owner cannot sell any bombs while Dodongo Cavern is in trouble. The shelves still show the Goron Tunic for 600 rupees, which is adult sized and protects against heat, plus a 20-pack of Bombs for 80 rupees that needs a Bomb Bag. Nothing here is worth buying yet. See Shops and prices for the full stock.

Play Sun’s Song for Darunia

Return to the chamber, stand in front of Darunia and play the Sun’s Song. He likes it enough to say it almost makes him want to dance, but it is not the right tune. He asks for something that feels like nature, a sound you cannot find on this mountain. That is the clue to use the song you learned in the forest.

Play Saria’s Song for Darunia

Now play Saria’s Song. This one fires Darunia up. He bursts out of his seat, laughs and dances around the lava bowl until he is out of breath. When he calms down he feels better and is willing to listen. Ask him about the Spiritual Stone of Fire, which the Gorons also call the Goron Ruby. He will not hand it over yet because the Gorons have too many problems, but Navi suggests helping him and Darunia agrees to hear you out.

Goron Bracelet

Goron Bracelet

Darunia asks you to defeat the wild beast in Dodongo Cavern, which will solve all the Gorons’ problems, and promises the Goron Ruby in return. Because he does not want to send you off empty-handed, he gives you the Goron Bracelet. With it you can pick up bomb flowers, so throw them before they explode.

Back to the trail and Dodongo Cavern

Light the wall flower with a Deku Stick

Leave the chamber, light a Deku Stick at a torch and follow the passage past the hungry Goron. A bomb flower grows beside a cracked wall at the end of the room. Touch the burning stick to the flower to set it off and blow the wall open, and a Lost Woods banner flashes as it falls. The Goron behind it thanks you, and when you tell him you met Darunia he is glad to hear the fire is back under his feet.

Follow the bomb flower passage

Continue along the dark cave passage. With the Goron Bracelet you can now pick bomb flowers from the walls and floor. Carry one to the next cracked wall, throw it and step back. The passage opens onto the nook of Medigoron.

Medigoron

Talk to Medigoron

A giant Goron named Medigoron sits in the nook at the end of the passage. He greets you with surprise at how far you have come, but he has nothing to sell for now and asks you to wait. Nothing comes of it in this chapter, so move on through the cave to the sunlit mountain path outside. The Death Mountain Trail banner appears again as you step out.

Blast the boulder at Dodongo Cavern

Pick a bomb flower from the fenced patch beside the trail and carry it toward the blocked entrance. Put it down in front of the huge boulder and run. The explosion shatters the boulder, and Navi calls out that you can get in now. Cross the rope bridge to reach the path that leads on to the cavern entrance.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #20

Along the path to the cavern, Tektites patrol the ledge. Past them you reach a dim stretch of trail with a patch of soft soil near a sign. Open the Items screen, choose your Bug in a bottle and use it on the soil. A Gold Skulltula crawls out of the soil. Defeat it and its token drops. That is your 20th token. More patches are listed on the soft soil page.

Walk to the cavern

Follow the lava-lit path onward. The Dodongo Cavern title appears at the end of the path. The cavern itself is covered in the next chapter, which takes you through the lava rooms, the Bomb Bag, King Dodongo and the Goron Ruby.
