This chapter closes the child half of the game and opens the adult half. After Ganondorf’s escape from Hyrule Castle you recover the Ocarina of Time from the moat, learn the Song of Time and play it at the altar in the Temple of Time. That opens the Door of Time, you draw the Master Sword, and the seven years it takes to grow up pass in the Sacred Realm. Rauru gives you the Light Medallion, Sheik meets you in the temple, and you walk out into a ruined Hyrule Castle Town.

Finding the Ocarina of Time at the moat
Search the moat for Zelda’s ocarina
You start on a misty rock road outside Hyrule Castle, with Navi chiming beside you. She remarks that Ganondorf showed his true colors, then asks whether Princess Zelda threw something away and thinks it landed over there somewhere. Head along the water’s edge and look for the blue glint shining under the surface.

Ocarina of Time
Pick up the glint and Link lifts the blue ocarina out of the water. The box reads “You found the Ocarina of Time!” and a second box calls it the royal family’s treasure, left behind by Zelda, with otherworldly tones that hold mysterious power. It is the instrument for every song in the game, and Link plays it by opening the songbook and choosing Play a note.

Song of Time
Zelda’s voice reaches you through a white mist. She says that by the time you receive the ocarina she will have disappeared. She wanted to wait for you but it is too late, so she leaves you a special melody, the one that opens the Door of Time. The notes appear on a staff. Repeat them on the ocarina using the Play a note prompt, and the box confirms “You played the Song of Time!”

“You learned the Song of Time!” appears, and Zelda asks you to play the song at the altar in the Temple of Time and to protect the Triforce. Navi checks that you are all right, then blurts out the news about Princess Zelda. Cross Hyrule Field towards Hyrule Castle Town.

Reaching the Temple of Time
Cross Hyrule Castle Town at night
Hyrule Castle Town is quiet after dark. A banner reads Hyrule Castle Town as you enter. Walk down the main street past the lit windows and the guard, then follow the stone edge beside the fountain to the wide stairs at the far end. Nothing needs doing here yet.

Play the Song of Time at the altar
Climb the steps to the doorway of the Temple of Time. A banner announces the name as you step inside. Walk to the round altar with the glowing sigil, then to the stone tablet in front of it. Navi wonders if this is the altar Zelda meant. Check the tablet to see the Song of Time, then open the songbook, choose Play a note and play it. A blue time-warp light fills the screen.

The Door of Time and the Master Sword
Open the Door of Time
The light settles and the Spiritual Stones you carry fly to the three alcoves above the great stone door: the green one on the left, the red one in the middle and the blue one on the right. A golden Triforce lights up above them and the door grinds apart. Walk up to the altar in front of it, then pass through the glowing gap into the chamber beyond.

Approach the pedestal
The chamber beyond is a round room lit by a single shaft of light. Navi remembers the Great Deku Tree speaking of this place. The camera sweeps to a pedestal where a blue-hilted sword stands. She names it as the Blade of Evil’s Bane, the Master Sword. Climb the stepped platform until the A button prompt appears over the blade.

Master Sword
Press the Draw prompt and Link takes the hilt in both hands. He strains, then pulls the blade free and holds it up. The box reads “You got the Master Sword!” and the next one says you hold the legendary Blade of Evil’s Bane, a sword only the chosen hero can wield. It becomes your sword for the rest of the game.

Sacred Realm and the Chamber of Sages
Watch Ganondorf in the Sacred Realm
A flash of light carries Link away to the Sacred Realm, a platform ringed by blue flames. Ganondorf appears behind you and gloats that he has known all along you would be his key to the Door of Time, and that the royal fools and their little hero have handed him the Sacred Realm. You cannot act during this scene. He walks off across golden water into a bright glow, swearing the world and the Triforce are now his.

Meet Rauru
A white fade leaves Link in the Chamber of Sages, standing before Rauru, Creator of the Temple of Time. Navi is stunned at how much you have grown. Rauru explains that the Master Sword kept you in the Sacred Realm for seven years, that opening the Door of Time let Ganondorf in, and that he took the Triforce and became the Demon King. Hyrule is now overrun with beasts.

Rauru says the awakened sages can seal the Demon King away by combining their power in the Shackles of the Sages. He is one of them. You are the Hero of Time, chosen by the Master Sword to fight beside them. He asks you to carry his resolve as the Sage of Light and to prepare for battle.

Light Medallion
Triforce symbols glow on the floor and the Sage of Light pedestal flares. The Light Medallion rises in front of Link and the box says “You were entrusted with the Light Medallion!” Rauru tells you to find the sages and protect Hyrule, and a flash returns you to the temple.

Sheik in the Temple of Time
Wake as an adult
You are an adult now. Navi asks if it really has been seven years, and suggests looking around outside. Walk from the sealed altar towards the steps of the temple hall. Before you reach the exit, a stranger steps out of the light and calls you Hero of Time, Link.

Hear Sheik out
The stranger introduces herself as Sheik, a descendant of the dying Sheikah clan. Link notes that she seems to be Sheikah like Impa. A name card reads “Survivor of the Sheikah”. She says the clan carries a legend: when evil gains power, those called by the voice from the Sacred Realm will awaken, one in the deep forest, one on the high mountain, one beneath the vast lake, one within the dark tomb and one upon the harsh sands.

Sheik adds that the five temples and their awakened ones will bind evil and restore peace, and that finding all five temples is your mission as the Hero of Time. One sage is waiting in the Forest Temple, within the deep forest. Navi urges you to hurry there, but Sheik says you cannot enter yet: the steps leading up to it have crumbled away and you need a tool first.

Awakening the Five Sages
A banner marks the new main quest, Awakening the Five Sages, and the game saves. Sheik tells you to go to Kakariko Village and ask around, since a tool hidden there is the key to the Forest Temple. Once she finishes speaking, a second banner adds Forest Temple Mysteries to your Threads of Time quest list. It is the first of the five quests that lead to the sages.

Hyrule Castle Town as an adult
Walk out of the temple
Leave the Temple of Time and step into a ruined landscape under a gloomy sky. Dead trees and shattered walls line the road. Follow the path forward to the ruined streets of Hyrule Castle Town, where fog hangs thick between the broken houses. A banner confirms the name. Enemies attack along the way, so keep your sword ready.

Gossip Stone in the ruins
A blue Gossip Stone stands in the open here. Talk to it and it shares three rumors: that vision-enhancing lenses should be banned at the Treasure-Chest Shop in Hyrule Castle Town, that the owl Kaepora Gaebora is the reincarnation of an ancient sage, and that playing certain combinations of notes to Gossip Stones can produce marvelous results. None pays off yet, so note the last tip and carry on.

Slip past a ReDead
Further along the street, Navi warns that the monster is a ReDead. If its glare catches you, you are cursed and cannot move, and if it grabs on to you, flail around to get free. It is not that strong, so approach it from the side and strike it down with the Master Sword. More enemies roam the ruined street, and some drop green Rupees. Clear them and continue to the lit house at the end.

Poe Collector’s house
Step into the purple-lit house and talk to the Poe Collector. He welcomes you and explains that Poes are the shadowy specters of graveyards and plains. His options are I want to sell, What’s a boo? and Never mind. He adds that the rare Big Poes need a horse first. A lantern like the one in his house, near a rotted fence or a fallen tree, marks a Big Poe’s home. He says they will not show themselves to you as you are now.

None of this is possible yet. Big Poes need a horse, so it waits until you have Epona. Leave the house and head out onto Hyrule Field.
