Kokiri Forest and the way to Kakariko Village

Mido

Hear the Deku Tree Sprout and talk to Mido

In Kokiri Forest the Deku Tree Sprout tells you how a Hylian child came to grow up among the Kokiri, then tells you to break the curse on each temple and defeat Ganondorf. Walk to the Lost Woods tunnel and speak with Mido at its mouth, who apologizes for being so mean, then leave the forest and head for Kakariko Village.

Kakariko Village: Cursed Rich Man and Shooting Gallery

Visit the Cursed Rich Man

At dusk the Kakariko Village banner appears. Enter the Cursed Rich Man’s house, the dark room lit by candles. He recognizes you as the one who freed his sons from their curse and thanks you for lifting it from every one of them. This only happens once all of his sons are freed from the Gold Skulltula curse.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #20 from the Cursed Rich Man

The Rich Man hands over a Piece of Heart. It is your fourth, so the game announces that four pieces have formed a new container and restores every heart you have. That is Heart Piece #20 and a full extra heart. The Heart Piece list has the running count.

He still carries a curse of his own and says it would take 100 tokens to lift it. Ask him about Gold Skulltulas and he offers to repeat his hints about the ones in trees and in soil. Keep collecting tokens as you travel, because the 100-token reward comes back to him later. The Restored First Son appears behind you in the room, thankful to be human again.

Walk out and follow the village streets to the Shooting Gallery, which has moved here from Hyrule Castle Town with upgrades. The Shooting Gallery Operator explains the rules: you get 15 shots to break all 10 targets, and a perfect score wins a bigger quiver. Pay the 30 rupees to play, choose the first answer, “I’ll play!”, and stand in front of the counter with your Fairy Bow.

Aim with the bow, then press the Shoot Arrow button the screen shows once the READY… call ends. The targets pop up around a painted desert backdrop, and the counter at the top climbs from 0 to 10. With 15 arrows for 10 targets you can afford five misses. A “Cleared!” banner appears when the last target breaks, and the operator calls it a perfect score.

Bigger Quiver

Bigger Quiver

You receive the Bigger Quiver, which holds up to 40 arrows. The operator adds that an expert game offers a special prize, so come back when you are ready for it. Leave through the door, open the map screen and ride Epona down toward Hyrule Field and on to the Temple of Time.

Temple of Time: Prelude of Light

Sheik

Meet Sheik on the upper platform

Reach the Temple of Time and climb to the platform where Sheik waits. Sheik says you are making steady progress toward awakening the sages and that some sages still need your help, and quotes lines about summiting the mountain, overcoming the lake’s depths and transcending time. Sheik also explains that placing the Master Sword back in its pedestal sends you seven years into the past.

Prelude of Light

Sheik says the way back to the Temple of Time is the Prelude of Light, the song of the Sage of Light. A staff appears on screen with the notes. Sheik plays the first phrase on the harp and you repeat it on the Ocarina with the note buttons the prompt shows. Sheik plays again and you answer once more. Get it right and you learn the Prelude of Light.

The song’s description reads that it invokes the power of light and warps you to the Temple of Time. Play it whenever you need to return here quickly, from anywhere in the world. Sheik adds that you can also return to seven years ago from this temple, then tells you to go to the temples and awaken each sage, and disappears again.

Big Poes on Hyrule Field and the Poe Collector

With the song in hand, you hunt Big Poes at night. Each one sells to the Poe Collector in Hyrule Castle Town for 30 rupees and 100 points. The Poe Collector pays out a bottle at 500 points and a gold rupee at 1000 points. See Big Poes for the full points table. Bring the Fairy Bow, Epona and a free Empty Bottle for every Poe.

Big Poe

Shoot and bottle each Big Poe

Ride Epona across Hyrule Field after dark. Purple flames burn on the ground at certain spots in the field. Ride Epona over one and a Big Poe rises from the flames. Draw the Fairy Bow and press the Shoot Arrow button when the prompt shows. Once the Poe is hit it leaves a glowing flame, so open the item menu, select an Empty Bottle, and use it on the flame to catch the Poe.

“You collected a big poe in a bottle!” confirms the catch. Link says the Poe Collector will probably buy it. Repeat until your bottles are full.

Link on Hyrule Field with the message that he collected a big poe in a bottle
Poe Collector

Sell the first four Big Poes

Ride into Hyrule Castle Town and find the Poe Collector, a hooded figure in a purple-lit room. Choose to sell and hand over the bottled Poes one at a time. He pays 30 rupees for each beautiful big poe and adds 100 points, with the running total on screen. After four Poes he announces that you are at 400 points, tells you that at 500 points he will give you something useful for catching Poes, and sighs “Shame…” when you have no more to sell.

Empty Bottle

Empty Bottle at 500 points

Go back to Hyrule Field and fill your bottles again. On the return visit, the first Poe you sell takes you to 500 points. He congratulates you, then gives you an Empty Bottle to keep, saying the gift may bring you joy. See Bottle Locations for the rest of your bottles. He also says that at 1,000 points he will reward you with something golden.

Sell the other Poes you brought. Each sale adds 100 points and 30 rupees. When your last bottle is empty, he sighs “Shame…” and repeats that he will reward you with something golden at 1,000 points. Then head back to Hyrule Field for the final round.

Gold Rupee

Gold Rupee at 1000 points

On the next visit, sell what you caught. One of the Poes is a regular Poe, which he buys for 15 rupees, and the Big Poes bring you to 900 points. The Collector cheers loudly when you reach 1000 points and calls you quite the ghost slayer. Accept the deal, and he gives you a Gold Rupee, worth 200 rupees. That completes the Poe Collector’s rewards. Leave the shop and ride out of Hyrule Castle Town toward Lon Lon Ranch and the lake.

Lake Hylia as an adult

Ride Epona across Hyrule Field and stop at Lon Lon Ranch, where Malon recognizes you as the fairy child from the forest. Then take the road past the ranch fences to Lake Hylia. The lake has dried up, so you walk along the exposed shore on foot. Beside a large flower platform near the lab, a ruined house shows a green glow inside its doorway.

Hall of Fallen Foes

Step inside and look at the green glowing bed. Navi remarks that this is strange and suggests lying down to see what dream comes. Choose “Go to sleep.” The screen fades and Link appears in the Hall of Fallen Foes, a round hall lined with statues of monsters he has beaten. The “Hall of Fallen Foes” banner appears.

Kaepora Gaebora greets you here. He says this dream space holds memories from the waking world and that every monster you have defeated is memorialized as a statue. Examine a statue to learn more about the monster it depicts. Statues of your most powerful foes stand around the outer edge, and examining one starts a rematch against that monster.

The owl offers guidance if you want it and says the hall currently holds 50 monster statues. He advises you to spend time here learning about monsters you may face again. When you finish, tell him you want to leave the hall to wake up in the lakeside house, and the game saves.

Lake Hylia tower Heart Piece

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #21 on the wooden tower

Outside the house, step onto the flower platform growing there. It carries you across the dry lakebed past the log cabin and the rope bridge to a stone tower with a wooden walkway on its side. Hop off at the walkway and follow the planks around the tower to its entrance.

Climb the wooden ladder inside the tower, then exit onto the outer ledge and keep climbing the outside ladder. A Let Go and Jump prompt appears while you hang. At the top, a round wooden deck circles a tall pole. Walk across the deck and pick up the Piece of Heart. This is Heart Piece #21, your first toward a fresh container.

Lakeside Laboratory and the Golden Scale

Talk to the Lake Scientist

Climb down and walk to the door of the laboratory, a house by the lakeshore with a sign. Inside, the Lake Scientist remarks on your outfit, says a blast of frigid air rolled across Lake Hylia when the waterway leading to Zora’s Domain froze over, which dried up the lake and brought all his potion research to a halt. He adds that he has never been good at making potions fit for sale and that for those you should visit Granny in Kakariko Village.

Jump into the tank in the laboratory and dive. You do not reach the bottom, and the scientist notices. He says that was a nice bit of diving, promises you something good if you touch the bottom and offers a tip for diving deeper. Say “Yes, please!” He tells you about the golden scale, which would help you dive extremely deep.

Get a fishing rod at the Fishing Pond

Leave the laboratory and step onto the flower platform by its wall. It rides you across to the log cabin on the far side of the lake, where the Fishing Pond Man sits. He is glad to see a customer after seven years and says business is poor. For 30 rupees you receive a fishing rod, which stops you from using weapons while you hold it. Pay and take the rod to the pond.

The pond man warns that sinking lures are banned because fish love them too much. Walk along the bank anyway and a glittering item lies on the ground; pick it up to get the Sinking Lure, a modified lure that fish cannot resist. Open the lure menu and switch to the sinking lure. Then cast into the pond and reel in the fish with the Move and Reel prompts.

The sinking lure hooks a huge fish of 90 cm, and the pond man calls it a rare catch. Any fish over 60 cm normally earns a golden prize, but you used a banned lure, so he refuses to hand it over. He tells you to try again with a normal lure and takes the rod back. Pay 30 rupees again to borrow it, and keep the standard lure on this time.

Cast with the normal lure and reel in with the Move and Reel prompts. Land a fish bigger than 60 cm. The one that works measures 73 cm, which the pond man calls a number so big it sounds silly. When he asks if you are finished, answer “Yes, all finished” to trade your catch for a prize.

Golden Scale

Golden Scale

The Fishing Pond Man gives you the Golden Scale, and the message says you can now dive even deeper. He swaps your catch with the previous record fish in the tank and takes the fishing rod back. You dive deeper by holding the Dive button.

Piece of Heart

Heart Piece #22 in the laboratory tank

Walk back to the laboratory. A deep tank fills one side of the room, and its bottom holds a grate. Jump in, hold the Dive button to sink, and swim all the way down to the grate. The Golden Scale lets you reach it. When you surface, the scientist asks if you just touched the bottom of the pond.

He calls it magnificent and hands you a Piece of Heart. This is Heart Piece #22, and the message says four pieces form one container and that you need two more for an additional heart. He adds that once the lake’s waters return you will be able to dive to the very bottom. Walk out of the laboratory and the game saves.
