After the Shadow Medallion you tie up a few loose ends before the desert. Beat the Lon Lon Ranch course, fill a bottle with Lon Lon Milk from the cow in Kokiri Forest and ride Epona to Gerudo Valley. There you take a Gold Skulltula and find a hole with rupees. Then enter Gerudo Fortress, get locked up and fight through four cells to free the carpenters. The Gerudo captain gives you the Gerudo Pass and opens the rear gate to the Mirage Desert.

Lon Lon Ranch and Kokiri Forest

Ride to Lon Lon Ranch

Leave the Graveyard warp pad, where the “Awakening the Five Sages” quest update appears, and call Epona. Ride along the road across Hyrule Field to Lon Lon Ranch. The Lon Lon Ranch banner shows as you pass under the gate. Malon is waiting at the ranch gate and tells you Ingo has come to his senses and apologized for everything.

Lon Lon Ranch horse race

Malon has set up a lap course and says the fastest time on record is 40 seconds. Say yes, mount Epona and wait for “READY”. Ride the course at a steady gallop with the Go button, jumping Epona over each hurdle, until the “FINISHED!” banner appears. A clean run takes about 33 seconds, well under the record.

Back at the gate, Malon reads out your time of 00:33.66 and congratulates you on a new record. The prize is heavy, so she says she will deliver it to your house, and she hopes you will try the course again next time you visit with Epona.

Talk to Talon and Ingo

Enter the barn and speak to Talon. He thanks you for coming and says he is turning over a new leaf with fewer naps. Then walk out to the yard and talk to Ingo by the fence. He apologizes for what he did and admits he is now in debt. Neither gives you an item, so leave for Kokiri Forest.

Lon Lon Milk

Lon Lon Milk from the cow

In Kokiri Forest, follow the path to your house, climb the ladder and step inside, where Malon’s prize cow now stands. Check the cow, open the ocarina menu and choose “Play a note” to use the songbook. The cow only answers to the right tune.

Play Epona’s Song for the cow. “You played Epona’s Song!” appears and the cow responds to the melody. The cow says you have lifted her spirits and that her milk production has picked up, and you get Lon Lon Milk in your empty bottle. One serving restores a few hearts.

Gerudo Valley at night

Ride across the valley

Ride Epona out into the night toward Gerudo Valley. Follow the canyon path to the broken stone bridge and let Epona clear the gap with the Go button. The Running Man is in the tent camp on the far side.

Running Man

The Running Man

Walk into the tent and speak to the Running Man. He wants to run every corner of Hyrule and has heard of a land of harsh sands beyond the Gerudo’s fortress. He calls the desert relentless and says he would like a race with you if the bridge is ever repaired.

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #84

Beside the camp, walk to the stone wall of the ruined building and switch to the Longshot. Aim up at the Gold Skulltula on the wall and fire. If the Fairy Bow is equipped, switch to the Longshot first. The token drops with “You’ve collected 84 tokens so far.”

Song of Storms hole

Near the same wall, open the ocarina menu and play the Song of Storms. A whirlwind spins up and uncovers a hole in the ground. Drop in to reach a small cave with several pots and chests.

Smash the pots and open the chests for rupees, including a red rupee worth 20. Then leave by the flower at the far end of the cave, smash the rock pile in the canyon with the Megaton Hammer and follow the canyon tunnel toward the fortress. The Gerudo Fortress banner appears as the path opens onto the guarded gate area.

Master Craftsman

Master Craftsman

At the foot of the fortress path, a Master Craftsman stands beside a tent with the Gerudo Valley banner overhead. He tells you the Gerudo hired his crew to repair their bridge and his apprentices wandered off to look at the fortress, where the Gerudo are very serious about letting no one in. He asks you to find them, since his old body is not up to going himself.

Gerudo Fortress cells

Get caught

Follow the dark passage up into the fortress and climb the long stairs under the red banner. A guard spots you and shouts, and Link is knocked down and thrown into a cell. Navi warns that they will not hear you out. Turn on the Lenses of Truth in the cell, hit the spot it shows with the Megaton Hammer, then fire the Longshot at the grate overhead and pull yourself out onto the vine-covered ledge.

Carpenter Shiro

Climb down the ledge, go through the doorway with the red tassels and walk into the cell hall. Shiro is in the first cell and asks you to break him out. A guard bursts in, saying this is as far as you go. Fight the red-clad Gerudo guard with sword and shield, striking after each blade swing and spin.

She falls and a small key appears. “You found a small key!” says it opens doors in this area only. Walk to Shiro’s cell and press “Open”. Shiro, the youngest and newest of the crew, says he never wanted to come, and knows nothing about a temple or a sage.

Route to Saburo

Go through the barred doorway and follow the dark passage, then cross the sunlit courtyard and climb the stairs into the dark halls. Keep out of the way of the patrolling guard around the crates. A hole in the floor drops you into a dark room; collect the rupees there, including a red one.

Climb the staircase into the daylight, cross the rooftop and drop into the cell hall. Saburo calls out from his cell and says you must steal the key from the terrifying guard who holds it. The guard stands in the arena room and challenges you: “Behold, my blade art!”

Red-clad Gerudo swordswoman in the arena room declaring Behold, my blade art

Gerudo swordswoman fight

The Gerudo swordswoman is quick and fights you in the same arena three times. Keep your shield up, let her attacks land on it and step in with a sword combo as soon as a swing ends. Back away when she begins a spin.

She admits she underestimated you and promises the next meeting will be your last. A small key appears. Open Saburo’s cell and talk to him. He says it all worked out in the end and suggests the other carpenters might know something about the temple and the sage.

Carpenter Ichiro

Leave the cell hall, climb the ladder and cross the sunlit rooftop, then head back down into the next hall. Ichiro is in a caged cell. He says you have guts to get past the guards and warns that more guards wait nearby.

The swordswoman steps out again in the arena room, sick of seeing your face, and uses the same attacks. The same shield-and-counter plan wins. She grumbles that she let her guard down, and another small key appears in the cell hall.

Use the key on Ichiro’s cell. He introduces himself as a simple carpenter and says one of the newer guys, Shiro, was going on about the Gerudo. He knows nothing about temples or sages and promises to ask the others. Navi reminds you that one carpenter remains.

Carpenter Jiro

Take the corridor past the barred door, climb the ladder and cross the rooftop by the carts. Run down the stairs past a guard to the courtyard and the red gate, then follow the dark hall with its wall torches to the last cell. Jiro shrieks at the sight of your sword and begs for help.

Jiro warns of a Gerudo guard somewhere, and the swordswoman arrives right away: “These dances of ours end here, Hylian!” This is the last fight, so use the same defense and counter until she yields. After “Bested by a Hylian…” a third small key appears above you in the cell hall.

Open Jiro’s cell with the key. He explains that Ichiro, the senior carpenter, talked the four of them into becoming Gerudo thieves, and that the Gerudo are far scarier than he expected. He knows nothing of the temple or the sage and runs off toward Gerudo Valley. That is four carpenters rescued.

Gerudo Pass

Meet the Gerudo captain

Step to the bars and a red-haired Gerudo with face paint speaks to you. She asks if you are searching for the temple, says you may keep your blade and tells you she is the captain of this fortress. She praises you for beating a Gerudo and offers a deal: you grant her request and she gives you something in return.

She says her people know the place you seek as the Spirit Temple and that their exalted leader, Nabooru, went there some time ago. What she wants is simple: reach the temple and find out what happened to Nabooru. In return she will open the gate to the desert. She warns that dust storms and quicksand will keep you in constant danger, but she hopes your talent for battle is enough.

Gerudo Pass

Choose “I’ll do it” and she hands over a Gerudo Pass: “You got a Gerudo pass!” It lets you walk freely among the Gerudo and gets you into both the fortress and the Gerudo Proving Grounds. She adds that the gate just outside leads toward the Spirit Temple and that the gatekeeper will let you through.

Through the fortress to the rear gate

The barracks

Go through the door beside the gate into the barracks, where a Gerudo guard muses about trying on the mighty Ganondorf’s cloak and then demands to know what you are up to. Talk to her, then climb the stairs. At the top another guard grumbles that she dislikes men and insists that Ganondorf is always “the mighty Ganondorf.”

Golden Skull Token

Gold Skulltula #85

Take the ladder beside the stairs, cross the rooftops and climb the next ladder, then walk past the courtyard brazier. Equip the Longshot. A Gold Skulltula sits on a sloped wall. If the Fairy Bow is equipped, switch to the Longshot, then hit it with the Longshot and collect the token: “You’ve collected 85 tokens so far.”

The captain’s request and the rear gate

Walk through the courtyard to find the captain. She says many of the Gerudo see you as little more than a fly, but tells you to pay their glares no mind and to begin your search for Nabooru, once their honored leader, at the Spirit Temple. She adds that Ganondorf has forbidden the Gerudo from entering it.

The captain says the Mirage Desert lies just beyond the rear gate. Walk toward it and climb the ladder to the gate house. A guard on the rooftop wonders aloud how many years it has been since Nabooru walked through this gate, and whether she ever met the guide.

Climb down into the gate room, where another Gerudo has orders to let you through if you are brave enough. She warns that the desert has claimed more souls than anyone can count, and that those who carry the “eyes of truth” will be shown the way by a mysterious guide. She also tells you to follow the flag posts so you probably will not end up lost forever. Go through the rear gate and the Mirage Desert banner appears.
