Lanayru Defiled drops you into the sludge-choked Lanayru Wetlands, where you meet Qia, learn to wash sludge off enemies with water, and finally face Grimtorok, Archfiend of Grime. The battle gives you Qia as a warrior and the Hydrant, a Zonai device that lets anyone deal water damage.

Before you start

Recommended level is 20. You start with Zelda and Rauru, and Qia joins you partway through. Water beats sludge, so you will lean on Qia and, once you have it, the Hydrant.

Clearing the wetlands

Opening path and sludge Moblin

Beat the two Blue Moblins on the path. A little further on a Moblin appears with sludge smeared over its weak point, and ordinary attacks barely hurt it. Water clears the sludge, for example from a Hydrant once you have one, and special actions also still work on it.

Qia

Meet Qia

Head toward Qia as the objective directs, and stand your ground until the conversation ends. A camp along the way unlocks the Bonus Exchange. A Sludge Like then rises from the mire, and you are told you can now play as Qia. Her strong attacks are water-based, and her Torrential Wave skill also deals water damage, which makes it a good opener against the Sludge Like.

Sludge Like and the Hydrant

Defeat the Sludge Like with Qia, whose water attacks strip its sludge. Winning gives you the Hydrant, a Zonai device that gushes water straight ahead. From now on your non-Zora characters can deal water damage to sludge enemies too.

Two marked outposts

Split your group and rescue the Zora Captains at the two marked locations (the objective counts 0/2). More sludge-covered enemies, a Boss Bokoblin and Blue Moblins attack along the way, so keep a Hydrant ready.

Sludge Hinox

Regroup and head for the source of the sludge, defeating the sludge Hinox on the way. Use the Hydrant and water attacks to strip its sludge, then break its weak point.

Zelda, Qia and Rauru face Grimtorok as Qia warns of its changed form

Grimtorok boss fight

Continue south past the Hinox outpost to the last outpost, where Grimtorok waits. Water-based attacks work well until its first weak-point break. Once the red sludge on its head is removed, any attack damages the weak point normally. A sync strike with Qia temporarily imbues your attacks with water.

Korok Seeds

Korok Seed

Korok Seed 1: pinwheel

On the road after the first Moblin fights, a red pinwheel stands against a large rock beside a tree. Spin it and the Korok pops out at the foot of the rock.

Korok Seed

Korok Seed 2: wooden crate

At the Rescue the Zora Captains objective, smash the wooden crate beside the road and the Korok pops out.

Korok Seed

Korok Seed 3: Korok stump

On the hillside before the final outpost, a Korok stump sits in the grass. Sludge may cover the area, so clear it with Qia’s strong attacks or a Hydrant, then interact with the stump.

Treasure chests

Hearty Bass x7 is in a corner near the gate to the central outpost, next to a horde of sludge-covered Bokoblins. Zonaite Steel (Spear) x1 is in a chest beside a log raft at a gate on the road. Rupees x400 are near the burned trees before the final boss. Zonaite Steel (One-Handed) x1 lies behind grass west of the northern outpost; defeat the Moblin there first to open the gates.

Aside quests

The aside quest list covers Qia’s requests.

Rewards and what unlocks next

Qia and the Hydrant are the main unlocks, and the Bonus Exchange also opens in this battle. The results screen shows a Stage Bonus of 400 and gives Zonaite Steel. The Hydrant is also listed on the Zonai devices page.
