Side Quests and Collectibles Before Onox’s Castle Walkthrough

Oracle of Seasons 100% Completion Walkthrough26 chapters
CoversAutumn and winter Holodrum, the Gasha trees near Horon Village, the Horon Village shops, Vasu’s Jewelry, the Maku Tree and the Goron route to the secret, ending at the entrance of Onox’s Castle. Seasons change only at tree stumps, and you need the Rod of Seasons to use them.
DungeonNone. This stretch starts after the linked Hero’s Cave and ends before Onox’s Castle, so there is no dungeon, Essence of Nature or boss here.
RewardsPiece of Heart 12 (completes the third Heart Container from pieces), three Gasha Nuts (one 200 Rupees, one Piece of Heart, one from the autumn tree), one Gasha Seed bought for 500 Rupees and one planted, Mirror Shield bought again for 80 Rupees, many rings appraised at Vasu’s Jewelry, Biggoron’s Sword from a linked-game secret, the Phonograph trade step, and the Rod of Seasons on stumps.

This chapter covers the side work between the linked Hero’s Cave and Onox’s Castle. You harvest Gasha Nuts from grown trees, buy a new shield and a Gasha Seed in Horon Village, appraise a long run of rings at Vasu’s, and collect the twelfth and last Piece of Heart, which completes a Heart Container. The main optional reward is Biggoron’s Sword, which needs a Linked Game: a Goron tells you the secret, and Farore accepts it at the Maku Tree. Power Ring L-3 is also a Linked Game ring, so you need a linked save for that appraisal to appear.

Gasha Nut in autumn Holodrum

Cut open the Gasha Nut beside the red-roofed house

Walk to the grown Gasha Tree next to the red-roofed house in autumn Holodrum and slash its nut until it drops. The box asks you to check what is inside, and a nut can hold a ring, Rupees, a Potion, a Heart, a fairy or, very rarely, a Piece of Heart. Gasha Nuts come only from a tree that is fully grown, and a tree withers as soon as its nut is taken, so replant right away if you want the spot again.

Vasu’s Jewelry: the first round of appraisals

Appraise rings for 20 Rupees each

Vasu’s Jewelry in Horon Village appraises every unnamed ring for 20 Rupees, and a ring can’t be worn until he does. The first round in this stretch names three rings you have not seen before: the Armor Ring L-2, which lowers both sword damage and damage taken; the Power Ring L-3, which raises both by a large amount; and Maple‘s Ring, which brings Maple around more often. Rings do nothing unless they are equipped, so wear the ones you want from the Ring Box menu.

Several rings in this round are duplicates. The Octo Ring (turns you into an Octorok so Octoroks leave you alone), the Roc’s Ring (cracked floors do not crumble under you), the Peace Ring (a bomb you hold will not explode) and the Toss Ring (throws go farther) each come back with a note that you already own one. Vasu pays 30 Rupees for each duplicate, which is 10 more than the appraisal fee.

Pink cave: the Like Like takes your shield

Accept the loss and plan a replacement

The pink cave full of gold-ringed enemies has Like Likes, and one of them swallows the shield you hold in the B slot. A shield eaten by a Like Like is gone for good, so do not wait for it to come back. You buy a new one in the Horon Village shop later in this chapter, and until then you fight without a shield.

Maple bumps in the pink cave

Maple flies into the cave several times while you clear the Like Likes. Bump her with your sword or a bomb and she scatters Rupees, Hearts, bombs and sometimes a Potion or Seeds, which you collect before she does. None of the drops in this cave was a ring.

Horon Village shops: Mirror Shield and Gasha Seed

Buy the Mirror Shield for 80 Rupees

Enter the Horon Village shop and buy the Mirror Shield from the main floor for 80 Rupees. It is shield level 3, and it replaces the shield the Like Like ate. Pay at the counter and the shield goes straight into your inventory.

Buy a Gasha Seed for 500 Rupees in the basement

The basement of the same shop is open only to Member’s Card holders. The card costs five Ore Chunks at the Subrosia Market, so get it before you come here. Downstairs, a counter sells a Gasha Seed for 500 Rupees, and you should buy it because it grows into another Gasha Tree for a nut.

Play the chest game for a ring

When the basement stock is sold out, the room becomes a chest game. Each round costs 10 Rupees, and the dealer hides the prize in one of two chests; you pick the chest and open it. A correct guess can lead to a bonus offer that makes the next round harder, and at the end you get a ring. The ring stays unnamed until you appraise it at Vasu’s, so bring it there along with the others.

Vasu’s Jewelry: the second round of appraisals

Name the new rings

Back at Vasu’s, the first ring you appraise is the Quicksand Ring, which keeps you from sinking in quicksand. The next ring is a second Quicksand Ring, which Vasu buys back for 30 Rupees, and a second Maple‘s Ring is bought back the same way. The new names in this round are the Heart Ring L-2 (recovers lost hearts), the Gasha Ring (grows great Gasha Trees) and the Red Joy Ring (beasts drop double Rupees).

Winter Gasha Tree: a 200-Rupee nut and a planted seed

Cut the nut for 200 Rupees

Head east to the big Gasha Tree on the white winter ground beside the blue water. Slash the nut until the box says you got a Gasha Nut, then open it: the nut holds 200 Rupees. Your Rupee count goes up by that amount.

Plant a Gasha Seed in the snow

Stand on the soft soil near the stump that the harvested tree left and choose to plant a Gasha Seed. A Gasha Tree needs enemy kills before it can produce a nut, so keep fighting nearby while you move on.

Gasha Nut with a Piece of Heart in the totem field

Cut the nut that holds a Piece of Heart

Walk east past the tombstone-like rocks and the iron fence into the yellow-brown field with totem pillars. A green clearing in the middle holds a Gasha Tree. Cut its nut, and the box reports that it held a Piece of Heart. A Gasha Nut can give a Piece of Heart only once, so this is the one from nuts in this chapter.

The Phonograph for the Deku Scrub

Play the Phonograph for the leaf-headed Deku

Enter the sandy room with green plants and the leaf-headed Deku Scrub. Choose to play the Phonograph, which you received from the Guru-Guru Man, and he enjoys the music. He then gives you directions, and those directions lead to the Lost Woods step of the trading sequence.

Change the season at a tree stump

Cycle the seasons with the Rod of Seasons

At a tree stump, use the Rod of Seasons to cycle winter, spring, summer and autumn. Each use changes the whole screen, so you can check what each season looks like before you need it. Practice here is optional, and any stump you use again gives the same season.

Maple’s Rupee farm

Farm Maple until your Rupees reach 999

In one autumn cave screen near the stumps, you can keep killing enemies while Maple flies in again and again. Each bump scatters Rupees, Hearts, bombs and Seeds for you to collect. Rupees climb from about 750 to 999 over roughly eight minutes of play, and none of the drops in this loop is a ring or a Piece of Heart. Skip this loop unless you need Rupees before Vasu’s.

Piece of Heart 12 completes the third Heart Container

Change the season at the stump by the water

Find the tree stump on the shore of a lake, and use the Rod of Seasons on it to change the season. Walk along the water’s edge to the small islet with trees, and collect the Piece of Heart on it. The box says it makes a Heart Container. This is the twelfth and last Piece of Heart, and it completes the third Heart Container you can earn from pieces.

Check the Heart Piece counter

Open the menu and check the Heart Piece counter, which starts over at zero for the next container. You now hold all twelve pieces.

Biggoron’s Sword: the linked-game secret

Learn the secret from the red Goron

The secret starts with a Goron in the caverns on Goron Mountain, just inside the entrance. He tells you about the secrets of his ancestors, and you must agree to research them before he gives you the secret. You need the Goron Vase from the early trade steps before you can get that far.

Enter the secret through Farore

Return to Horon Village and go to the Maku Tree, where Farore’s Memory opens the secret list in the hall. Choose the secret you learned from the Goron and type its password on the secret keyboard in the Oracle of Secrets room. The room flashes white once the secret is accepted.

Take Biggoron’s Sword

After the flash, walk to the podium in the same room to receive Biggoron’s Sword. It is a two-handed sword, and the menu shows it in the B slot afterwards.

Vasu’s Jewelry: the third round of appraisals

Find the Red Luck Ring

Return to Vasu’s and appraise the rings you picked up along the way. Most of them are duplicates, and Vasu buys each back for 30 Rupees: the Peace Ring, the Fist Ring, the Heart Ring L-2, the Toss Ring and the Red Joy Ring all come back this way. The only new ring is the Red Luck Ring, which halves the damage you take from spiked floors.

The road to Onox’s Castle

Cross the bridge and the snow plateau

Leave Vasu’s and cross the wooden bridge over the river to the east. Continue across the snowy plateau with brown statues and stumps, past the block puzzle with dark holes. Several warps carry you across the map, and the story takes over after the last one.

Enter the grey-tile rooms of Onox’s Castle

The castle entrance opens to a lilac, checkered first room with pink statues. The next rooms have grey tiles, brown blocks and red chests on the floor, and you have no small keys yet. Stop once you reach the gold-block rooms, because Onox’s Castle is the next chapter.
