CoversHyrule: Link’s House, the Blacksmith’s Forge, the Hyrule Castle gate, the Sanctuary, the Graveyard and its secret passage
You needNothing. Every item in this chapter is handed to you or found on the way.
RewardsThe captain’s sword (delivery item), a borrowed sword, the Lamp Lamp, 1 Small Key Small Key, Rupees, and the first two Weather Vanes. No Heart Pieces, Maiamai, Master Ore or Bottles can be collected yet.

The first stretch of the game is a short, linear errand. You wake up late, carry a forgotten sword from the Blacksmith’s Forge towards the Captain, follow him to the Sanctuary, find the Lamp in a hidden passage under the Graveyard and arrive just as the villain Yuga turns Seres into a painting. Nothing can be missed here, though two Heart Pieces nearby need an ability you only gain later.

Waking up with Gulley

Gulley, the Blacksmith’s son, shouts you out of bed and warns that his father is furious that you are late again. Walk out of the bedroom and through the front door. Gulley chats outside for a moment, passes on a tip about spinning your sword near statues, and runs off ahead. Nothing in the house can be collected yet, so head straight out.

Weather Vane

Activate the Weather Vane

Stand beside the pink bird statue next to the house and swing your sword to spin it. This is a Weather Vane, and it is the game’s save point: a box asks whether to save, and choosing yes records your progress. Vanes you have touched are also marked on your map, and once you own Irene’s Bell you can ring it outside a dungeon to fly back to any of them. Spin every new vane you pass.

Blacksmith’s Forge

How to get the captain’s sword

Follow the path past the trees and along the river to the Blacksmith’s Forge in the town below the castle. Inside, the Blacksmith is talking with the Captain of the guard, who leaves without the new sword he ordered. The Blacksmith notices the mistake, hands the blade to you and tells you to take it to the Captain. The captain’s sword is a delivery item, not a weapon you keep. Heart Piece #3 hides behind the forge, but you need wall merging to reach it, so leave it for now.

Hyrule Castle gate

Talk to the gate guard

Cross the bridge to the gate of Hyrule Castle and speak to the soldier on duty. He tells you the Captain is not at the castle but was heading to your master’s shop, then advises you to look north of the castle, which means the Sanctuary. He also complains about vandals leaving paintings on the castle walls, a hint of what is coming. Leave the gate and follow the path he points to.

Weather Vane

Signpost and the second Weather Vane

A signpost in the field lists three destinations: the Fortune-Teller, the Sanctuary and Hyrule Castle. Take the Sanctuary road. Outside the Sanctuary gates stands another bird statue. Slash it to save and to add a message that a new Weather Vane has been added to the map. The Fortune-Teller can wait until later, and you will visit the castle properly in the next chapter.

Sanctuary

Seres and Dampe

Walk through the gate to the Sanctuary doors. Seres, the priest’s daughter, welcomes you and says the Captain has come to see her father. Before you can hand over the sword, a scream rings out from inside. Dampe, the gravedigger, finds the doors shut tight and remembers that the priest once spoke of a secret way into the Sanctuary, hidden somewhere in the Graveyard.

Dampe lends you a sword

Dampe insists you carry a sword into danger, so you keep the captain’s blade for now. You swing it with the B Button, and it is enough for anything that attacks you here. When Dampe has finished talking, head along the path into the Graveyard.

Graveyard secret passage

Find the hidden entrance

Dampe warns that some of the old gravestones can be shoved right over. Head east into the Graveyard and look for the large headstone enclosed by a low wall. Push it aside to reveal a staircase going down. Take the stairs into a dark cave, which connects the Graveyard to the inside of the Sanctuary. A Heart Piece is tucked away in this passage as well, but it is beyond your reach for now.

Lamp

How to get the Lamp

Open the chest at the bottom of the stairs to get the Lamp, then equip it on the touch screen. The Lamp lights a small circle around you and lights torches, and you keep it for the rest of the game. Use it as soon as you equip it, because the passage is too dark to see where the walls and pits are without it.

Cross the dark passage

Light the two torches at the top of the first room with the Lamp to open the door ahead. Further on, three Poes float around a room and are hard to see. Defeat all three to open the way forward, and break pots as you go for Rupees, including a Red Rupee worth 20.

Small Key and the lever

In the next large room, take the narrow walkway on the western side and follow it south to a chest holding a Small Key. Use the key on the locked door on the west side and go through, defeating the enemies that appear. In the last room, pull the lever to the left of the stairs to open the way into the Sanctuary.

Yuga and Seres

Yuga paints Seres

You enter the Sanctuary just as the priest demands to know what a stranger wants with Seres. The sorcerer Yuga answers for himself, says he will put her “upon a wall”, and turns her into a flat painting in a blue frame. The Captain, you realise, has met the same fate.

Yuga escapes

There is no fight yet. The priest tells you to run, but Yuga brushes you aside, announces that he is off to find perfection in Hyrule and leaves. The scene fades out, and the first chapter ends with a hero who has lost the Captain and Seres to the paintings. Your next stop is the home you woke up in, where a visitor is waiting.
