Eldin Volcano is a climbable mountain of rock terraces, lava flows and Torch Slug walls with Goron City near the top. The Eldin Volcano Trail starts right at the edge of Kakariko Village: walk north out of the village and the trail’s title card appears. A short cutscene shows a rift crack spreading through the lava higher up, and Tri reckons there must be somewhere up the trail to open a rift entrance. This leg falls under the Lands of the Goddesses main quest.

Pick up Rock Salt as you climb; it turns up on the trail’s ledges. Partway up, at the top of a flight of stairs by a Waypoint, a Business Scrub runs a Smoothie Shop. Its Salted Cactus Smoothie restores energy and is Fire-Proof for 3:00, which is useful on the lava fields further up. You also find the Fairy Flower accessory on the way up (see below), but it’s purely cosmetic.

Kakariko Village and the Volcano Trail

Kakariko itself is intact and worth a sweep. The Kakariko Village Shop sells a Climbing Band (Wall-Climb Speed Up) for 500 rupees, and a soldier on the king’s orders mentions that the Gorons haven’t been spared from the rifts either. Two side quests pay out here: Questioning the Local Cats (wear the Cat Clothes and talk to the village cats for 10 bunches of Refreshing Grapes) and Cuccos on the Loose (return five cuccos to their pen for a Fairy Bottle). There’s a Might Crystal in the graveyard and a short Bottom of the Well passage to explore. When you’re ready, take the Eldin Volcano Trail leading north out of the village.

The trail climbs a series of sandy switchbacks above the river. Duck into the small cave on the way for a chest with 6 Monster Fangs, then use a Water Block against the cliff to reach a second, larger cave. Inside, small spider enemies crawl between the boulders and pots; let your echoes deal with them, and open the chest along the stone ledges for 5 Rocktatoes.

Back outside, the trail runs beneath rock walls where Torch Slugs crawl, leaving trails of fire. Stack a Water Block against the wall and swim up it beside the flames, then defeat a Torch Slug (a Lizalfos echo does the job) to learn the Torch Slug echo. Keep climbing the upper ledges past the crates; a chest in a small walled pit holds 3 Might Crystals, and a Waypoint sits just beyond it. The trail’s Piece of Heart, on a cliff wall under a Torch Slug’s fire trail, comes after the rift further up (see the collectibles below).

From the waypoint, follow the narrow trench and drop into the hole at its end; the chest in the small cave below holds the Fairy Flower accessory. Water-block your way up the next switchbacks, smash the boulder, and drop into the dark cave beyond. Ghirros blow wind across its ledges; stack Water Blocks to reach the chest on the high ledge for a purple rupee, then head out through the brazier room. Back on the trail, the purple edge of a Still World rift cuts across the path; this is Eldin’s first rift, covered next. Past it, cross the plank bridge (watch for Zirros) and climb the stairs to the Business Scrub’s smoothie stand and Waypoint. The stairs at the very top end at the gate to Goron City, where a worried Goron greets Zelda.

Saving Goron City

Before you reach the city, a purple rift cuts across the upper trail. Step in to enter the Stilled Western Eldin Volcano, where Tri’s friends are trapped in five areas: bridge the lava between the floating platforms with Bed echoes, then drop through a hole into a side-view lava cave full of Fire Keese and steam vents to find the rest. Freeing all five closes the rift and earns 2 Might Crystals from Tri. At the top of the mountain, a Goron at the Goron City gate explains that a rift sprang up inside and swallowed a bunch of Gorons, and then Chief Darston fell in after them trying to save them. Follow him into the main hall, where the rift has eaten the back of the room; talk to the worried Gorons and Tri opens an entrance. Hop in.

The Stilled Goron City rift hides four of Tri’s friends among floating chunks of the ruined city. The first is on a floating slab a short hop from the start. Drop into the giant cooking pot near the start pad to reach a side-view cave of cracked blocks; a Ghirro echo’s bombs blast them open, and two more friends are inside. Back in the void, cross the platforms with Bed bridges while fighting off the flying enemies, then stack a Water Block to climb the last ledge and free the fourth. Mending the rift raises Tri to Lv. 7 and pays 2 Might Crystals.

Mending the rift restores the city and frees everyone, Darston included; he introduces himself as the Gorons’ recently appointed chief, then notices that Elder Gol and Elder Silv are missing too and runs off. Find him outside the city entrance consulting his slate, the Goron Chief’s 56 Nuggets of Wisdom. The biggest rift is at the crater, but poison gas blocks the way; he’s heard of a shortcut to the crater that only the two elders might know. Gol went to the Rock-Roast Quarry, a cave entrance up the mountain to the northwest, for some rock roast, and Silv went to check the Lizalfos Burrow, whose entrance sits on the northern lava lake. Both leads are part of The Rift on Eldin Volcano quest.

Mountain survival: only Lava Rock echoes float on lava. You can learn it from the rocks drifting in the lava flow right beside the Rock-Roast Quarry entrance, and then ride it or use it as stepping stones across the lava lakes. Lava geysers erupting out of the rock are elevators; drop a Lava Rock on one and ride it up.

Lizalfos Burrow

Head for the Lizalfos Burrow first. Ride Lava Rocks across the northern lava lake into the grey rock maze, where purple rift cracks split the paths; bridge and climb them with Water Blocks. On a walled ledge in the maze, a chest holds a golden egg. The cave entrance is past the green pools at the far side of the maze. Inside, Darston catches up with you and finds Elder Silv and a couple of Gorons, who came to look at some new, dark Lizalfos.

Room by room: Lizalfos in the crate-tiled first room (a chest there has a rocktato), then a lava-crack room where you can learn the Lizalfos Lv. 2 echo, then a narrow chain-lined corridor with Fire Keese, where you learn the Fire Keese echo. The last room is a lava-ringed arena full of Dark Lizalfos. Darston spots boulders in the ceiling and rolls into the wall to drop them on part of the pack; when the rocks run out, mop up the rest with your own Lizalfos echoes. Back at the entrance Silv praises Darston but can’t recall the shortcut, so Darston heads for the Rock-Roast Quarry next.

Rock-Roast Quarry

The Rock-Roast Quarry lies northwest of Goron City. Follow the grey rock paths around the lava, smash the boulder in the way, and grab the might crystal by the rift edge before climbing the rift-cracked ledges with Water Blocks. At the quarry’s rest stop, Elder Gol and his Gorons are worn out; Gol says the rift caught them while they were about to snack on rock roast deep in the quarry. Cross the lava on Water Blocks toward the roast pile; a chest along the way holds 5 rocktatoes.

At the roast pile you learn the Rock Roast echo. Use Bind to bring roasts back across the lava (Water Block bridges get you over the gaps), and hand them to the tired Gorons one at a time; Darston walks a load back himself too. Fed, the Gorons revive, but Gol can’t remember anything about the shortcut. Darston decides it’s OK to do things his own way as chief.

The Secret Passage to the Crater

Back in Goron City’s main hall, the two elders tell Darston that chiefs once purified themselves in the crater, and he runs off to his room, which has his father’s carved stone portrait above the bath. Use Bind on the fitting at the edge of the portrait and pull it aside to open the hidden passage behind it.

Darston can’t use your echo tricks, so you go through the passage alone at first. Ride Lava Rocks across the lava and up the steam-geyser pillars, and make an Old Bed bridge to a chest holding a monster stone. A side-view lava cave follows: bind Lava Rocks as rafts past the rising lava pillars (a chest there holds Refreshing Grapes) and climb out on bed steps. A giant rock blocks the last chamber; Darston catches up and smashes it himself. Past it, a chain stairway leads to the crater’s central rift, where Darston waits while Zelda and Tri go in.

Eldin Temple Dungeon

Clicking the image will navigate to the Eldin Temple dungeon walkthrough.

Next: the dungeon has its own page, Eldin Temple, from the entrance to the Volvagia boss fight. The collectibles below cover the whole region.

Eldin Collectibles

Four Pieces of Heart are on the mountain: two out in the open on the first climb up the Volcano Trail, a third on a platform in the lava lake north of Goron City, and a fourth as the reward for the side quest A Mountainous Mystery. Three of Stamp Guy’s stands are up on Eldin: beside a green pool on the Volcano Trail, on the sea cliffs at the end of the Glide Path Trailblazer course, and on a grey-rock ledge reached late in the game by riding clouds over the lava falls. The Firework echo comes from Basa in Goron City when you finish her side quest, The Fireworks Artist.

Piece of Heart 1: the trail ledge below the Torch Slugs

Just after closing the first rift on the Volcano Trail, follow the path up past the green pool to where a Torch Slug crawls along the wall. The piece sits on a small ledge on the cliff face below the path; drop off the edge onto the ledge to grab it. It’s easy to miss because you can’t see it until you’re right above it.

Piece of Heart 2: the stone block by the rift

Past Rock-Roast Quarry, out on the lava flats beside the rift, a piece sits on top of a tall stone block. Place a Water Block against the block, swim up through it, and step off onto the top to collect it.

Piece of Heart 3: the lava lake platform

Where: The northern lava lake above Goron City, the lake that holds the Lizalfos Burrow entrance; the piece sits on a small stone platform out in the lava, just off the rock path that runs along the lake’s east edge. How: Follow the path north from Goron City past the Tweelus until the platform comes into view on your left, then summon a Crow echo and hold on to it with Bind’s reverse mode so it tows you across the lava; let go over the platform.

Piece of Heart 4: A Mountainous Mystery

In a dark cave high on the mountain, the Summit Cave, the Goron Darston tells a folk tale about a flame giant trapped inside Eldin Volcano, which starts the A Mountainous Mystery side quest. Head deeper in: ride Lava Rock echoes across the lava, burn away the brambles, then work through a side-view lava passage using Bind on blocks and placing echoes as steps. At the end, two torches flank a door into the giant’s chamber. The flame giant swings floating rock fists; throw Water Blocks at it to douse its flames and expose its core, then attack the core. When it falls it leaves a Piece of Heart. Warp back out to Darston, who gives you the Goron’s Bracelet, a Goron treasure that lets you carry things faster.

The Eldin Stamp Stands

Eldin has three stamp stands. First, on the Eldin Volcano Trail, by a hanging chain and a green pool; the Stamp Guy is waiting there, and filling a card here earns the exhilarating stamp card. Second, on the sandy sea cliffs near the end of the Glide Path Trailblazer course. Third, on grey rock high on the volcano, reached by riding clouds over the lava falls. The third stand is usually the last in the rally: stamp it and the Stamp Guy gives you the Stamp Suit.

The Firework echo

Back in Goron City after the temple, visit Basa, the local fireworks artist, in her house to start The Fireworks Artist. She needs blastpowder soil, which grows where the golden flowers are: head out onto the volcano, bridge the lava with an Old Bed, and dig it up from the golden-flower patch beside a green hot spring. Bring it back, Basa reworks her blastpowder ratio for new colors, and after the show over the volcano she gives you the Firework echo. Hold onto it: Dampé needs one to build the Tocktorok automaton later.

Might Crystals and echoes

Eldin is good for Might Crystals: the story route alone hands out 10 (3 in a chest in a walled pit on the Eldin Volcano Trail, 2 from Tri in the first Still World, 2 in a cliff-ledge chest, 2 from Tri in Stilled Goron City, and 1 at the rift edge in Rock-Roast Quarry), and beating Volvagia adds 5 more from Tri (“You got 5 might crystals from Tri!”) along with the Heart Container. Five more come from the post-temple side quests: Ready? Set? Goron! (beat a Goron to the flag for 50 rupees), Glide Path (glide the course with a Crow echo for 10 rock salt), then Glide Path Trailblazer for Disian (2 crystals), one lying on a cliff ledge above the sea, and The Flames of Fortune (bind the burning coal and keep it near lava all the way back to Goron City; Limme pays 2). Echoes you learn in Eldin: Torch Slug, Lava Rock (your lava transit), Lizalfos Lv. 2, Fire Keese, Rock Roast, and Firework.
